Ok, I know this thread is a few years old but I have a job prospect in Torrence, and am seriously considering it. I know this sounds stupid but it seems like with Elsinore/Comp Edge closing is the moto scene still healthy? Also I usually like to ride after work (I know this is a dumb question), but hows the drive from Torrance to say Milstone on a weekday after work. Assuming I get off around 3pm. Google maps looks pretty horrific when I researched it. Any thoughts would be great. Also any advice where to live? Assuming household income ~$260k
Lmao if you get off at 3pm in Torrance.. youre not sniffing the fumes of milestone until 6pm... And dont let there be a crash. Being that the 91 would be the straightest shot.. ur doomed once you get to yorba linda/Anaheim hills corridor... You would want to get off at 11am-12noon to beat traffic now a days... Once 1:30-2pm hits its like nobody is at work anymore

With so many people on the road always, people on the beach, in the surf, in the mountains. When do they work??? If home based businesses make that kind of coin. Sign me up.

To OP if you are planning to live within 15 or so miles of the Pacific Ocean getting to where the tracks are with enough time to ride is nearly impossible getting off at 3 p.m. Maybe just maybe make Perris for night practice. Pick your poison, be close to the tracks or be close to work???

Torrance is a great area to live but it's a long drive to the tracks in any direction you choose without traffic. I say move now if you can make that kind of money and hit the tracks on the weekends.

California sucks for sure. The weekend is tomorrow and I can't decide if I want to ride practice at one of several tracks, race at one of several tracks, camp in the desert and ride for free all weekend, go skiing or snowboarding, or go surfing and have a bbq on the beach, or lounge around the house and work on some projects. Maybe I'll go for a mountain bike ride. Maybe I'll go to one of the local casino's, or go see some live music. I can't decide. This was taken on my way home last night, no idea why someone would want to come here Wink

I'm in Houston, Texas 1500 miles away and my neighborhood is starting to look like a Californian refugee camp. And I don't even live in a trendy/popular part of the State like Austin or the Dallas/Plano/Frisco area. There's a LOT of people from California moving here.

Clearly there's something wrong with California and there's thousands of people fleeing it by the truck load every day and headed west. There's no denying it. 1/3 of the State's budget goes to supporting illegals, it's massively in debt, it's pilfering State employees pensions, it's the most highly regulated State in the US and a sue happy goldmine. You can't even get a one way U Haul out if there because there's none. If they have one, they charge you an arm and a leg for it. You did not mention any of this. USA Today ranked DEAD LAST for "quality of life" two years in a row. The fact that BBQs on the beach, snowboarding, camping and surfing are your biggest worry tells me either you're really rich or you're about 20 years old.

It was mentioned early in this thread but USAT's "Quality of life" is a really weird metric that combines pollution and voter turnout. Those are the only two factors considered.

No surprise that California is low on those items. Also no surprise that Texas is right there with them at the bottom.

FWIW, just checked Uhaul online and it looks like hundreds of trucks are available one-way from the Los Angeles area to Houston for pickup today, no advance reservation. So, not sure where you got that narrative, but it is surely made up.

I'm not going to read 14 pages, but we just moved to Crestline in California and it's pretty ideal. We are up a mountain so we get all four seasons, but houses are affordable and there are a lot of off road riding areas. Also Glen Helen and Milestone are close by. We also have skiing within 45 minutes at Big Bear. It's tough out here.

I'm in my 30s and my wife and I both make a good salary working full time. It's not for the faint of cash. We are doing good though because of the area that we are in. Paid 360k for a three bedroom house with a lake view. Gas is expensive, but everybody usually makes a higher salary. I would rather make more and be frugal when I need to, than get paid less.

*Edit, we also have mountian biking near by.

I grew up in SoCal. I moved away six years ago when my wife got pregnant because I couldn’t afford to let her stay home to raise our son. Just yesterday I had to turn down a promotion at my company that would have brought me home to SoCal because I just couldn’t justify going from a paid off 4 bedroom 3 car garage home to a 2 or 3 bedroom condo with a $3000 mortgage. As much as I miss all my friends and family there, I need to save money for his college and plan to retire at some point.

I grew up outside of fresno, with my own private track. Moved to Pismo 4 years ago. My wife and i are leaving California at the end of June, the expense to live here is just crazy. we have a household income around 140 and its just not worth making that kinda money and living like your poor.

Just consider the concept of a place that everyone is fleeing because the property values are too high. It is not even possible under the supply-demand model.

An old Yogi Berra-ism comes to mind: "The place is so crowded that nobody goes there anymore."

Living in another state and watching/reading the "news" doesn't make one informed, let alone an expert on the matter.

Its been said all over the thread... California is whatever you want it to be, so long as you can afford it. All 34 years of my life here, still love it.

Everywhere you go has it's pluses and minuses. A good friend of mine lives in LA. He's been there about 15 years and is thinking about bailing and coming back to the Midwest. He says lots'of good things about Cali, but he said he's just tired of the high cost of living, traffic and politics. He makes really good coin.
.
That said, it's one of the very few places you go to the beach, ski, moto, mtb and hike all in the same week without going very far. Tons of fun stuff to do. And no winter!!

But there's no doubt the state is a hot mess financially, and politically. And they love to tax, charge fee's and regulate.

I wouldn't want to move there. My wife and I prefer the Southeast. But to each their own. Hell, look at all the people that live in states where the winters are brutal. They love it.

That's why we have the best country in the world, imo. When it comes to places to live, you can find just about anything you want.

I currently Live in Minnesota, im originally from California
Born there anyway, But on your comment that people love it
Maybe some do , but i would say 9 out of 10 people i Talk to hear say they hate winter , wich is strange right?
They live in a place with brutal winters, but seriously most say they hate the winter, its like a very large amount of people just stay where they where born, wether they are scared to move , or just make friends and have family there etc.
But i talk to a lot of people , and most here say they want to eventually move to a warmer climate even though most never will.
I definitely am moving to a warmer climate personally.
I haven't decided for sure where yet.

I think if I was a young new professional with no responsibility past student loan debt I would live out in calirfornia for a few years. But my mentality was a lot different back then for sure. No chance I could do it today. I’m too angry at taxes to live in that state.

Hard to beat Northern San Diego County. Oceanside, San Marcos, and fallbrook are still good deals (for SoCal) as far as housing goes. We live in Carlsbad, and Pala 30 mins away, Cahuilla, Perris, Elsinore, and GH just over an hr(ish), ocotillo Wells 2 hrs. 5 mins to the beach.
Cool!! My wife and I go every year to Carlsbad. It will be home for us in the future!

You know you are one of the very few people in the world who has a unique way of avoiding a whole lot of taxes. When my wife and I did travel nursing we saved up crazy amounts of money, and that's how we were able to buy property out here.

In much of California, home is a big topic of business. In some towns, housing is out of reach for even upper-middle-class Californians and town zoning rules keep the housing supply low. Other parts of the state still haven’t recovered from the Great Recession and have homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages. If you’re lucky enough to have a house in California that you love and can comfortably afford, you’re doing well.Smile
