The way Eli talks in this interview, it sounds like he doesn't have the bike dialed in to his preference:

Once they've commited to toughing it out and riding through injury, they don't want to be giving themselves an excuse for poor finishes. Once you tell 50 media people the same reason why you're doing bad, it probably gets pretty ingrained in your phsyche, almost like a self fulfilling prophecy.
Maybe for insurance reasons. Once the rider says ' X body part is jacked' it has to be adressed and ignoring it is negligence.
Those are the only reasons I could think of but they're probably not the only ones.
"Jason's not on Aldon's program anymore" (uh, wrong).
"Jason didn't ride much during the off-season" (wow. Sooo wrong)
"Jason got lucky last year"... did you watch last year? Start with Houston...and explain that to me.
"Jason's lost the desire because he's won too much" That one? That's hilarious.
"Jason's injured" Well, have you watched qualifying? Is it a sporadic injury that only shows up randomly? A magic injury?
Here's what I've seen...go watch the races that haven't gone well...and the ones that have...he's over-thinking this crap and he's, at times, getting back to just putting his head down and riding the damn motorcycle. We saw this for a bit at PHX and even A2.
Going forward...and then backwards...ain't the Jason I know. When he gets things all sorted out...he'll be the usual Jason we've seen.
You got me!
I even print my own counterfeit autograph-line tickets and, yes, I recently got myself a new KTM.
I have to admit, I'm a total fan boy and know nothing about this stuff.
Jason is a really fast rider, he can ride until his last breath, never stop pushing until the finish line. He proves it in the lite class and last year fighting with musquin, tomac and roczen, outspeeding them in a lot of race, puting balls on the line when needed.
This year though, he says than the offseason was tough with all the obligation due to his title. I believe him, that must be hard to stay focus and feet on earth when the money is raining on you, and you got all the attention from the industry, it's not a lite title.
So i guess it was a bad off season, he really seems out of shape and rythm. Plus he probably hide an injury.
And maybe the mental is less strong, but that goes with the above statment : exhausting off season + minor injury = hard to take risk and be on top off the game to defend a title.
Yes I know podium rider which is great. I just wouldn’t trust him as a 100% champ with decent competition

People say how Kenny is the greatest and fastest thing since sliced bread....He has not won a race in over 2 years....
So YOU'RE the reason we have to be reminded about Kenny's arm injuries on the broadcast every damn week...
No kidding. Let Roczen move on and have a weekend where he doesn't watch that crash every opening ceremony. We all know its insanely amazing he's even riding again, let alone racing at that speed again. But please they need to quit beating the injury drum and let him race like before all the crashes.
