Point is, arguing that the insurance system (pre or post ACA) is the best way to deal with providing medical care is a pretty tough pill to swallow. What good is the ability to pick your doctor if you're going to be charged 100k for that luxury, since there are loopholes the insurance company can exploit to deny coverage?
Well... my $30,000 surgery was reduced to $1,500 out of my pocket, so there's that

I currently have medical mutual through my employer. Recently i was denied coverage for an accident i had in september that resulted in a broken leg and collarbone. They said even though i wasnt racing its still a hazardous activity and isnt covered. Unfortunately im stuck with a $70,000 bill for inpatient at the hospital. Although im trying to appeal the claim, i want to start looking for insurance thats applicable to a 25 year old who doesnt get sick. Something that covers things young people do that cause injuries.

Anyone have experience with a good company? Im in ohio
Does you insurance policy have a clause stating which legal activities they don't cover? I would think they would have to explicitly define what they deem "dangerous" and therefore are taking exception too.
Riding an off-road motorcycle? Operating an off-road 4-wheeler? Riding a MTB? Riding a motorized MTB? Riding a horse? Playing on the company softball league?

Your state probably has a Department of Insurance. File a complaint with them against the insurance company for unfair/bad faith insurance practices and they will have 30 days to reply. I had a fit when I was getting charged almost $1000 for an x-ray. I used healthcarebluebook.com to determine the average cost in my area and used that as leverage that I was getting exploited. Less than 30 days later, I received a letter stating "as a one time courtesy they would be waiving the fee". Good luck. There are consumer protections for this, you just have to use them and play the game.

Kaiser is probably the way to go, as far as health care it's one stop shopping.
If at all possible DON'T tell them you were hurt racing dirt bikes or skate boarding...etc.
Say you fell off a ladder or down some stairs, tripped on a curb.

With out getting into a political conversation but wouldn't the affordable health care act have prevented you from being denied coverage?

X2........ My wife is French, so I have been going to France for the last 10 years for 3 months at a time.
Decided to get my green card (social security) recently. Am fully covered insurance wise. No deductable, i just walk in and they take me. Thats it, end of story, finished.
US insurance industry is complete BS. Its designed to keep you confused and pissed off.
A big IHI money pyramid/money scheme ..... in my opinion.

Their list included racing and motocross racing. But they also included “not limited to.” So they can make shit up as they please apparently. Fishing or boating could be not covered if they deem it hazardous activity. Thats kindof my entire issue right now. I was riding at an open ride day. Plus i suck ass at riding and wasnt going more than school zone speeds.

Lots of non-emergency surgery centers are going to a prepayment model, meaning if you can't pay at least a portion of the bill the day you go in for surgery, it's not gonna happen.

Giving medical insurance companies any latitude to determine what they will or won't cover is a recipe for disaster and a major hurdle to establishing healthy lifestyles in the US and allowing the top athletic talent the country has to offer rise to the top.

I took all my gear off in the ambulance with my broken leg with no issue. Saved me from wasting a set of brand new $200 riding gear and $100 boots.

In my case i could have completely changed my clothes before they got there. If i wasnt getting yelled at by people to not move i would have changed.
$100 on boots? Please tell me you're not spending more on riding gear than boots.

You sound like a very lucky man and I hope your luck does not run out. If you see anything on my site that is your size, let me know and Ill try and work with you on price. I hate to see anyone in boots that weren't designed for the most protection possible.

Idk about the emergency surgery places... everywhere ive been they ask for insurance only.

And health insurance does get to decide what is and isnt covered. Its stupid. Whats the point of paying for it if you cant use it. Like i get denial of coverage for breaking a leg from hitting a 100ft jump in a race, but not slow riding from someone below c class.

Agree, I don't like bait and switch especially when it has to do with you body. That's where protections are actually a good idea. Good luck on your recovery.

The feeling of knowing that whatever injuries sustained will be treated without question or fear of financial ruin: priceless. I hope that U.S. politicians can come to some sort of sensible solution for your health care system. Best of luck to the OP.

You are not denied coverage. They deny the claim. Big difference.
Read the fine print. Your salesman(agent) does NOT know whats covered. Talk to an insurance adjuster or underwriter.

Or read the fine print very well. The adjuster can be your friend or worst enemy. The problem with USA vs social medicine is insurance is a for profit business. They do NOT lose money. When they do, they recoup it over time with higher premiums for everyone.

If you're wanting to avoid being charged with insurance fraud, isn't it better to not say on a public forum that you present motorcycle accidents as other kinds of accidents?

Longstanding treaties with the federal government guarantee all Native Americans free health care. As a result, the Affordable Care Act exempts them from paying a penalty if they choose not to purchase insurance. More than 2 million Native Americans receive free health care at federally supported Indian health facilities. Many others receive care from tribal facilities and urban Indian organizations.

Thats what the USA calls welfare/medicaid/social medicine. Call it what you want, but federally supported means tax payer supported.

Considering we took this great land from the Indians, the least we can do is Healthcare for the native American.

My wife is Choctaw. She and the kids do use the Indian clinic.....

It's better than nothing..

That's not true.

- It prevented insurance companies from denying you for pre-existing conditions.
- It allowed children to stay on their parent's insurance until age 26.
- It prevented insurance companies from using lifetime limits.
- It forced companies with 50+ employees to offer health insurance.

Now, we can debate whether the cost of those additions was worth it or not, but those things are definitely positives to consumers.

Good to hear - hope the luck continues. More of a general point than a statement directed at you. I've seen a few people making online comments that are less than advisable.

I believe the ACA prevented health insurance companies from not accepting customers based on preexisting conditions or other demographic data that indicated a higher risk of payout by the insurance company. Not the same thing as requiring the ins company to cover all injuries from all activities.

If we keep letting insurance companies have their way sooner or later they will cover nothing on your basic policy and require you to have supplemental policies for walking, talking, eating, going to the grocery, etc. etc. etc they have become more about collecting money than “covering” for your well being. i.e. paying out

It’s a tangled web and I get it but damn, the last thing a person that has insurance that is down and out is the thought of whether their “case” will be covered or not.
