How many magazine staff, editors, or journalists anywhere raced at pro level? And why would that even be necessary to contribute to a magazine? Does racing a bike fast make you a better writer? More knowledgeable? Not in my view.

In regards to Jody, he’s raced pretty much every weekend for more than forty years. He’s probably raced the most motos of anyone in the world, ever. He’s ridden, (or more likely, raced) practically every motocross bike that’s ever been built and I’d wager he’s forgotten more about motocross than most people will ever know. He also has a Masters degree.

I’d say he’s adequately qualified.

I knew that about the Ph.D, but funny there is no mention of it here.

Do we really want pros or ex-pros writing bike reviews and articles???? You think the grammar is bad now?

I did not know we were keeping score on what I comment on. Congrats on your ability to count. I simply asked a question about the mag that everyone rags on. Don’t take it personal dude

They go to the track every weekend and not to spectate. That has to count for something. Been reading MXA since July 1973....never missed a issue

I can bet money they know more about any bike they test before it is in the hands of the public. Jody degree in engineering, Stapleton has been Pro for quite a few years and does more than just MXA testing because of the quality feedback he gives. Ecklund has been racing since a little kid up through the ranks. His training partner was the late Caselli and he has ridden every brand of dirt bike and crossover bikes in MX, Cross Country, WORCS and Big Six and National MX and SX.
Plus they have several riders from every skill level racing the bikes 2 stroke and 4 stroke every weekend. Some stock and some with high dollar upgrades and switching bikes between moto's of performance parts of suspension between moto's.
From kids to 70 year old riders. There is not another publication that I know of in the US that does that. But just because they might say in their eye's on is better than the other is a reflection of all the input, and Jody still will tell you ride what works for you.
Rip them all you want but on a Saturday I learn stuff I did not know because I ask. At 62 I wish I knew all the stuff I am learning but was 40 years younger. When you get guys like Gary Jones, Ron Lawson, Lars Larson and Rich Taylor and so many more I am very lucky to call them friends and they have never judged once.
Socal might not be the best place in the world but I have met the best of MX here.

Being / having been a pro doesn't mean you know how to test. Travis Pastrana knew his way around a motocross track, but from what I've read, he knew shit-all about testing. I'm pretty sure that testing was part of Tim Ferry's job at Kawasaki, too, because James wasn't very good at it.

I poke fun about the whole add a tooth to the rear thing but I tried and damned if they aren’t right
They sound long in the tooth occasionally but are seriously committed to giving you an accurate test and good tech data.

Hey Mr. Info, you pretty much nailed it on the head. A lot of people know a lot about their own bike and
their own things. Can you imagine these guys know more about each and every bike than most know about their own.
You could pretty much ask Jody about any bike from any year and he could speak knowledgeably about it.
I've talked to Jody before. The guy is a freaking encyclopedia of information. But he's also very cool to just talk to
and he doesn't make you feel below him.

If you ride/race every single weekend, but never make it past novice speed, does that make you an expert or a fool?

Jody has said several times that his doctorate is in gerontology...….

MXA is still my overall favorite magazine, even if they make an error now and then.

All the complaining about MXA, would you haters be happy if they went away? Just don’t buy it, don’t read it, if you hate it so much.

As for their test riders, most if not all raced at the pro level at some point in their career going way back. Telford, Brooks, Waddington, Holley, Jody, etc all the way up to modern times.

I still look forward to seeing my MXA in the mailbox more than anything else, and I’ve subscribed for 40 freakin years!!

Most mags are afraid to criticize any bike. MXA aren’t. But they also praise when they feel praise is due.
I don’t notice many spelling or grammatical errors. Not saying they don’t exist, but at least they have never commented on the “floorless” handling a bike exhibited. (Face palm)

No shortage of fast and experienced riders on the staff. If they are actually “pro” matters little to me.
The slow vet riders opinion is most relevant to me. Unfortunately.

Anyone remember Dirt Rider declaring the Cannondale "Bike of the Year"?

Anyone remember Transworld declaring the KX450 the shootout winner when everyone else rated it at the bottom of the pile? Of course those one paragraph bike tests at Transworld were always top notch. Two pages past the bikini pics. Laughing

Father Paul can be found in Norwich, CT on Sundays.

Paul Boudreau

I was digging through swap meet mags at the YROC race at Glen Helen back in 2002 and there was a guy thumbing through a stack talking to the guy selling them. I picked up on a few things he was asking and asked who he was. Paul Boudreau he says...

I got him to autograph a few event T's that I had all the legends sign. Good times with the Reverend Baz and Fang the 'Sang.

But who writes the articles? In my opinion, it isn't the staff as a whole, it's the fact that Jody is going to write what he thinks anyway.

He writes as if his audience has never rode a bike before.

Bike of the year didn't necessarily mean the best bike, just the one that made the most impact on the industry. A lot of times off-road bikes won because they were new models from exotic manufacturers that pushed the limit of what was accepted. If you actually read that magazine before they shut down you would know that though. . .

My issue with MXA, and really every magazine, is how they blow small things out of proportion. I'm sorry, changing engine mounts or one degree of offset is not going to make a bike "night and day" or "light years" better. Noticeable, maybe, but not to the extent they all make it seem. MXA did cause me to miss a race and eat some major shipping cost though because of some terrible info on their site about YZ swingarm swaps though. Apparently we have different opinions on what constitutes an acceptable "bolt on" mod.

The MXA crew have more knowledge testing bikes than any organization in the world. Jody and his crew have ridden practically every bike made since the 70's including every pro level bike, plus they race almost every single weekend. Think about if you had the chance to ride and race every brand, model, type, and displacement on a continual basis, took notes, and wrote in-depth articles on each machine for a living, do you think you would be an expert?

It's wildly ignorant for people to question MXA. Their process is 2nd to none, yet the best the vitards can do here is complain about the occasional typos and grammar errors. Good grief.
