Me:"Hey guys I'm just goin to ride cautious today, not jump much and just cruise around and try and do ten laps"
Gets on track and instantly goes berserker mode wide open jumping everything like a maniac with some original slipknot or the likes cranking in my brain for all of 3 laps with a lot of "OH SHIIIT!!" mixed in. Pretty standard.

You know how rock guitarists make faces when they're playing leads? When I'm riding well those faces happen. Take this turn, Wahhh!!!! Sky off this jump! Wahhh!!! Awesome pass! Wahhh!!! It means I'm in the zone, and I'm not thinking in words, more feeling my way around the track. It's more like "Inside", "Flow", "bunched up, go around", "don't follow", "Commit", "Oh Shit! Do it!" but instantaneous.

I'm more feeling my way around the track and keeping the flow.

If I'm tired but still have focus I continue to ride. Focus can overcome physical tiredness. But when I lose focus, I call it a day. Same with Skiing.

Maybe some people can think about shopping lists, and whatnot, still go fast and not crash. I'm not at that point, nor do I want to. The goal for me is always to be immersed in what I'm doing, and get beyond thinking in words.

And the mind always has time for a beautiful woman Smile

I think, "go fast where their not" I say it over and over lol. I want to go fast when others are letting off the gas.

I count out loud to myself. The distractions are less and I focus on adjusting my count to my markers. I use to also argue with myself in the 3rd person and puke a little on the gate, psychological mind games

I'm usually counting something. Be it corners till the finish, how many bites of my sandwich I had for lunch, or trees I've rode past

Sounds crazy but I feel like I meditate when I ride, I find it much easier to think without any distractions I've sorted a lot of shit out in my head out there riding.

I don't really think of anything else other than what is in front of me. The best part of riding is the being in the van on the way home and I think to myself, "I didn't think of anything else today other than riding" and it is always so cathartic, no joke. That is why I love to go riding.

If its a MX race, my mind is a blank chasim of nothingness. Literally, like the black of general anesthesia.

Casual practice or later in an off road race? All bets are off, any and every random thing that can enter ones mind shows up in my mine.

Occasionally, in all of the above circumstances, I tell myself to breathe and grip with my legs to help with the arm pump, but always reactively, and when its too late.

I know, the recipes for suck.

I just cleaned these goggles how can they have a piece of dirt and a dog hair in them still?Thank goodness for my CTI knee braces or I'd of had to pack it in long ago.I miss berms(2 stroke rider).Gosh jumps are big these days. The YZ 250 has to be the bestbike ever.Look ahead.Stop draging the rear brake.Man I love riding this thing.Imagine how fast I'd be if I worked out.I'm gonna start riding 3 or 4 times a week.So very much fun.The people at work wouldn't understand even if I told them.I love this bike its like wearing ballet slippers the suspension is so good.Maybe I should start Stravaing my lap times Ibet this one was a PR.

When on the track. i forget about the projects at work, bs home projects the wife wants me to do. Its nice to just clear my head and try and hit the same line every lap.

I had a new 1988 Honda CR-250 that was very trick and fast as I worked at the Honda dealer in Tampa. I raced at Dade City and practiced almost every Monday at the Crooms riding area north of Tampa. I am riding a moto in the front pit at my race pace. Then a Kawasaki KX-60 passed me so fast in a very sandy whooped out section. I thought to myself I have to catch and pass this little guy. Well I started riding way over my head "WFO" style and could never even get close to him, he smoked me. After a few more laps I went back to my car, put the bike on the trailer, opened up a nice cold beer and started watching this KX-60 rider, he was amazing and so damn fast. I then notice a rather large man walking toward me. He asked why I quit riding? I said that KX-60 rider out there smoked me so bad, I figured I was better off drinking beer and watching him ride because I suck. The guy was super nice asked if he could have a beer and sit on my trailer with me. I gave him a beer and he introduced himself. He said thanks for the beer and I am "Rick Carmichael" and that is my son "Ricky" on the KX-60. That is the first time I had ever heard that name but not the last. The rest as they say is "History".
Wow! Now that is a cool story!

I called PulpMX a few years ago and ask Trey Canard this question. Him and JT started talking about how when leading a race they both would think about splittting up the purse money, how much taxes they were going to pay and who gets bonuses. Pretty wild to imagine that at a level like that!

I guess I could see myself thinking about that. Especially for the guys that don't win all the time. They don't make much to begin with. Out front thinking to yourself, I'm about to get paid...... wonder how much taxes will be.

Also making sure I take different lines say a berm gets blown out or to miss a kicker on a jump face.

I am also big on going inside and outside in all the corners so I think about which on I took last lap.

"This is awesome man. Bringing back the memories"
"Whoa, shit, that was close"
"Damn, that's a deep rut"
"Shit, I must look like a spode"
"Cool rollers ahead, god I feel like I'm riding a bucking bronco"
"OK, I'm gonna hammer this turn and style over that double"
"Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt, coming up short, OUCH!"
"Well, that sucked"
"Oh, this part of the track looks awesome, I'll nail this (straightaway encountered)"
"Here comes the finish line tabletop, Christ, that's a steep approach. Screw it, I'll just roll it"
"Alright, couple more turns and that's a lap, damn, I'm tired:
"Well, I'll bet my second lap goes a lot better, Aaaauuuuurrrggghhh, I can't feel my hands, freaking arm pump"
"This lap is gonna suck"
"I think I'll go back to the truck and get a drink of water before I kill myself, man, I must be out of shape"
"I wonder which way I'll drive home. Maybe I'll take the scenic route by the lake"
"Mmmmmmm, looking forward to that cold Bud Light when I get to the house"
Same thoughts here minus the beer since I quit drinking 5 years ago. Thanks for typing all that out. I was afraid of getting arm pump before pulling off and quoting.

I remember riding around singing songs as a kid, but when I got older and a little faster, there was really no time to think of anything other than just focusing on the track...different lines, my breathing, and pace. I always thought that for me that was the greatest thing about MX...you can completely leave the world behind, at least for a little while.

Yeah this happens to me all the time. I've found that early in a race or practice I'll be pretty focused on the track, but once I get into a flow my mind wonders. I used to fight it, but I've realized that once I've got the track down my mind slips the riding into a more subconcious level. And that level is way more intuitive and effective.

Trying to force myself to focus on the track just gets me thinking about thinking and that's when I screw up. I've also found that if someone starts to catch me or I catch someone, my mind will flip itself back into gear, so I just let it do what it wants to do.

Actually, I really only think about what the bike is doing, I'm doing on the bike, etc... The only time I don't think about my life is on the bike.

My favorite story is the one Matthes tells about Timmy adding up his money while racing a SX wondering if he had enough money to retire. Laughing
