Catastrophic engine failure 2017 Honda 450r

I've been on hondas my entire life never an issue. I beat my bikes up pretty good with around 150+ hours each bike. Never an issue. Maybe I'm lucky

Working to get honda to cover these issues. Second picture in this post, bike is heading to a Honda dealer to get looked at. Both are friends of mine and sold these bikes to them in North Carolina, unfortunately both of these bikes are now in Pennsylvania. Hopefully honda will take care of them.

Dad you heading to unadilla?? K8 and I will be up there thursday!

Ehum, not sure if KTM has more problems than Honda but the thing is that there are numerous storys on the board were KTM owners explains that KTM went above and beyond to help them. KTM pays for everything and makes sure that it's repaired very fast.

Never heard Honda do anything even close to that.

Bro, a new torque wrench? I better not hear about any flinging sprocket bolts up there in Utah.

Had this happen on my son's practice bike, twice. The second time, only 4 hours on new plates. First time was with the stock stack with judder spring. Second time was with all large OEM plates, small plate and judder removed. Bike has a total of 30 hours. Race bike now has a Hinson. He was lucky. Only one chunk fell out of the basket and into the motor. Found it stuck to the drain plug.

I read this article from Dec 2016 on your review. Still waiting to hear from HONDA corporate case manager. I Cant believe its takes 2 months to address customer concerns. I am out $10k as i paid for the bike and for a 3 year full service warranty. Wish i would have bought a KTM. What a bummer

I bought a 2017 honda 450r paid in cash on April 24th 2017. Additionally I purchased 3 year service warranty through Pro CALIBER MOTOR SPORTS Bend. I rode the bike 2 twice and Henderson Flat and Clone Butte. After less than 6 hours the engine siezed and kick starter would not budge. I drained the engine oil that night and found metal fillings. I have now been waiting 7 weeks for a bike. I've been told it's the clutch, parts are on backorder until tge end of June. Today I met with Brian the gm and all he did was give me an 800 number to Honda customer service. Wish i would have spent my hard earned money in a better bike and a dealer that values their customers.

Since you aren't local I'll give you a hint- Pro Caliber is basically a car dealership and know for poor, incompetent service. They have a tough time changing a tire on time & correctly. I am willing to bet the OP paid top dollar for the bike and got oversold on their stupid "Service Warranty" which is scary considering who would be working on the bike..........

Half of these complaints today wouldn't even be an issue if 1) people still worked on their own bikes & 2) didn't expect the OEM to be liable for everything that fails on a race bike.

Call me crazy but when something breaks you nut up and fix it yourself and consider it a cost of the hobby UNLESS you can easily convince the dealer there was a manufacturing defect, which is rare.

Uh, not right out of the crate and not a pattern of breaking the same parts with low hours. Sounds like most manufacturers don't want to see it happen either.

I work on my own bikes and I'd be pissed if I bought a new bike and if failed prematurely. Normal wear items are one thing, and failures after long hours are expected, but a low hour bike having a catastrophic engine failure is unacceptable from an engineering standpoint. "Nutting up" and taking the loss on something like that would be stupid, these may be race bikes but that doesn't excuse irregular failures.

"Race bikes" don't have a warranty, right? It has been a few years since I bought a new bike so I could be wrong.

I think in a case like this you should be able to have the dealership take care of you in the manufacturer can take care of them at a later date that's complete bs. I can guarantee you if you were a pro your local dealer would Supply you another bike and they would take care of it especially if they were sponsoring you not that that should make a difference

One of my buddies bought a comprehensive package from KTM that cost him 2k that would cover everything including if he blew up the motor

Not on 65's. I had more random BS go wrong with our new '16 KTM 65 than any bike I've ever owned -

Inner lining of flywheel came apart at 10 hrs. Bike quit over a 60' table. Ruined stator also.

Rear disc exploded (15hrs) - I mean literally came to pieces violently. Not hot as it was off the start. Ruined the caliper carrier & caliper on that one plus new disc.

Just two off the top of my head. We aren't the only ones for both issues and 0 help from KTM just fixed them myself.............

You guys saying to "nut up" and "it's a race bike" seem to miss the point... it's brand new!!! One thing if it dropped a valve at 100hrs and he was expecting Honda to do something about it... it's BRAND NEW!!!

Honda owes him assistance and quickly! This is a pure customer service do the right thing in good faith move and im surprised they haven't contacted him back yet with a resolution!

I usually side with the manufacturer on these kinds of things but a bike, even a "race bike" blowing up at six hours is unacceptable and you bet I would be going to the highest person in the company I could find looking for compensation. 6 hours is completely unacceptable. And if they didn't do anything for me I would be yelling my lungs warning everyone not to buy one. Like other guys have said, this type of thing happens. Its just the way it goes. What matters is how the company steps up to take care of the customer.

I think I would just buck up and get the Henson keep or e bay the replacement. Make sure the replacement is a upgraded part sounds like the original has problems.

Are you kidding me? I own my own independent shop and build my own engines......however I bought a new Honda off the showroom floor and I can assure you if it grendaded on the 3rd ride I'd be insanely pissed. Not really a coorelation between not working on their own bikes and having them blow up before the first service interval. Go lecture the kid on CL selling the bike that needs a top end about "working on bikes".

Is just me or do others think dealers are clueless with this level of repair? Maybe some have the talent and experience, but I just don't think that is a requirement to become a dealer.

Yes, this case is clearly a dealer one....for sure right now I wouldnt be talking to them and maybe the OP isnt now...

The root cause is the more interesting bit...just saying it was the clutch isnt much help.

in 2001, I had a crank pin break on a cr250. Had only ridden it 6-10 times? thought it was crazy and let my buddy know who owned the dealership. He said sorry, its a dirt bike. Service manager called honda, and they said check for cracks inside cases. I didn't notice anything unusual, but they put new cases, and bottom end in. totally free, on Honda. later on, I found out the local dealers were tearing the showroom bikes apart and replacing cases. Mechanics were pissed as they were only getting 2 hrs pay to do it, or something like that. I was pretty impressed by honda.
