Eric Gorr Terrible Customer Service

Guess I was one of the lucky ones. My '07 RM250 (290) ripped. The clylinder looked great and I had zero issues with it. I bought it already done, so I have no first hand experience dealing with him.

It's too bad his reputation has been tarnished, he was a nice guy when I spoke to him.

I had him do my 2001 rm250 with the barely legal overbore 14 years ago. no problems.

did a new sleeve and port work on my kx500 2 years ago. good except packed like shit and ruined the head gasket in shipping. he made it right and sent me a new gasket.

I've heard both good and bad from local guys.
I won't risk it anymore.

Thanks for sharing this. I was just about to send him a cylinder off my 07 CR250. Maybe I will look around a bit first..

He has a very bad rep. I've read the horror stories and I know a couple friends that used him and were very disappointed. I cannot name one person who has won anything major or any top rider that used Eric Gorr.

Most people are trying to save a buck and end up spending more in the long run and the bikes still run like a crap. Just recently a guy had 3 big bore YZ 144s built for his wife and they were slower than stock. They had way too much compression and made 24hp in the dyno. A stock YZ 125 makes 34!

There are several good builders out there but once you find one stick with them and don't bounce around for the flavor of the week.

Terry Varner has built several motors for me and my son. His latest YZ 125 is a 40hp beast! My son pulled 2 hole shots this weekend against a full gate of 250f's.

I have never used Eric so have no opinion other than I get Bob's frustration.

And I agree with you about Terry, I always use him for my 2 strokes...never an issue.

Really?
Eric did all our motors, mod 65's, mod 85's, all of the super mini bikes we raced at Loretta's and our CR 144 which made more peak HP than a stock 250f.
Katie won the Branson National on the mod 85, and 2 other years finished 3rd, made it to Loretta's 3 times had a 5th place OA and an 8th place OA.

I called SEVERAL of the "More well known" shops and asked them all the same question, How is your reliability? They all answered, Well........ I asked Eric, he asked me , How is your maintenance? I said I thought it was pretty good and then he told me "As good as stock Shawn".

Never, not once ever, did I feel like we were "Out motored", Never had a motor failure that was the fault of anything he did.

I'm sorry to hear anyone had a less than positive experience, but that was NEVER our experience. I would recommend him to anyone.

You always hear "It's 90% rider, 10% equipment, he gave us the Best 10%.

I just want to say thanks for the helping words bros, I kinda figured I would get ripped on. The whole thing has just been a disaster.

@Brocsdad I do not mind spending the money and actually Terry was on my list options when I first started this project. I just read mostly good reviews from Eric and he seemed very popular. Depending on how it runs I may send it back out for the full treatment over the winter.

I'll try and call him again tomorrow, maybe with a different phone number haha.

My friends had oval shaped bores and the porting looked terrible. There is definitely a pattern of bad work. You can google just about any builder and read where someone had a bad experience but with Gorr their is a pattern.

I'm sure some people received good motors but I'm not rolling the dice on that.

You don't ever hear of any high profile amateurs wanting a Gorr motor. There's a reason for that! You do hear good things about Terry Varner, Lynks, JMS, EBR, Etc.

Heard good and bad things about Gorr, but I have never used him. After listening to Watts last night on Pulp and seeing his work on the homepage, I would be interested in using him.

I had Gorr do a 265 on my 03 CR250 and the powervalves were unevenly cut, the porting was amateurish, the exhaust bridge wasn't straight and the bike never jetted properly again regardless of the 20 needles I tried. He also drilled the exhaust bridge holes on the Wiseco crooked like in Bob's pic above. Last year I decided to buy a new cylinder and send it to Varner. I will just say this, my business will be going to Terry from now on. He did a fantastic job in every way.

Update. I received the $130 via my PayPal request. But still no e-mail. So I guess that is all I can ask for at this point.

Well that is something. May just be time to wipe your hands with this one. I will remember this next time I consider sending something to him.

I was extremely happy with the work Eric did a couple years back on my YZ295. Word to the wise: If you want to contact him, do NOT try email...However, I found before 9AM (CST) he will answer the phone almost every time personally..

I was going to have him redo my CR250 cylinder, but nobody would ever answered the phone, nobody called back or returned my email.

Communication is big deal to me and he's terrible at it.

He did all of out TM 300's over the last 3 seasons, never let us down , and we never had late parts even though we were shipping in and out of Germany... the bikes rip and he has been very helpful,

Maybe the guy is just swamped with stuff, after not being so busy , doesnt excuse your issues , i agree, but that may be why.

Also you cant blame Eric for OEM casting porisity.

I'd say Varner or Tom Morgan would be the best and most honest. Unfortunately there are not very many players around so I would imagine everyone uses US chrome or millennium.

I believe Tom stepped in right after Eric left. Tom did two of my Kawi motors back in the day....and made those things god awful fast. I would trust him any day , and I've never heard one bad word about any of his work. I don't know much about Eric's work , so can't comment.

The majority of these issues are related to end cost.

The platers (all) do a terrible job of proper bridge relief and chamfer work. A proper chamfer is almost imperceptible, it's not a visual thing but what the ring feels which is only .001-.002" deep.

Oem cylinders do this "right".

Powervalves fixtures to manually machine would be pricey, same for cnc... so you get manually done valves. At the end of the day this isn't important... it needs to not hit the piston.

As to gorrs "performance" work... I can't say anything good. We have package after package come through from him that manage to run fine, be reliable enough.. but not deliver the performance they should, or often even exceed a proper running stock bike. It's a mean statement to make that ill gladly back up at any time on any race package we offer on a dyno of any choosing - of which I don't believe gorr uses at all. Our race 125 combos make more hp then any gorr 144 I've ever tested... and our 144 combos have made as much hp as some of his 250 combos. He utilizes a horrid head design that just doesn't work, universally to every engine (which also is a no no) and typical port work is clean up of tunnels which is purely for show on just about any race engine, the real work lies in the actual durations, widths, angles, and combo of pipe, head, fuel and ignition.

I think his knowledge of vintage bikes and combos is excellent... on much of that a small amount of modernization towards what is production now goes a long way.

To fix your piston issues, you need a proper bridge relief. If you oil the bridge and run a ring up and down it, you will see the bridge relief is currently terrible and not consistent/even.

My only experience with EG's work was back in 97 with a fellow rider & co-workers CR250 at the time. We both had work done to the cyl / heads while mine (also a 97 CR250r) was done by a local engine tuner. On the EG engine modifications the only difference we noticed was a minimal gain in the low part of the rpms. On the engine that was done by the local tuner there were modest gains across the powerband. Needless to say I wasn't impressed with EG's work & never considered having him do engine mods on any of my 2t's afterwards.

You can also go to the TT website & read about his bad engine mods on many CR250's. I've had a few members send me PM's asking for advice after getting work done by him. Most have given feedback of loss of topend & not being able to jet the bike properly. Even though most members are running a PWK Keihin carb the engines are difficult to jet probably due to his head mods.
PC, TV, TMR & Watts Perfections would be much better choices for engine work.

Definitely not quite right. Very odd to have something done that poorly by a guy who has forgotten more about porting and 2T engines than most of us will ever know. I can't speculate, but I'll bet there is more to the story (on his end).

My friend had his RM 125 done about a month after mine, and his has been great. I do not know if my engine was done by an intern or what. I went with Eric because of all the rave about him....I guess things happen once in a while.
I've had 5 - 144's done by him. 3 RM's, 1 YZ, and 1 KX. Excellent work and service every time. In two cases, he forgot to return a couple of misc parts. Both times, he shipped them immediately after I called. Agree with everything PRM31 said above.

Are you 3D modeling your "master" test cylinders that will be used as the template for customer cylinders?

I've always been curious how much 3D modeling plays into this.

We stopped using Eric back in 2002. We sent in a cylinder to him to have it redone and when it came back thenports were so knife edged it ruined the piston and hand grenaded. Also the ports were not correct on heights either. Back then he was using us chrome to do all his plating. Had a friend who had a 285 done by him and Eric told him to run leaner on the jetting specs for a big bore which makes zero sense at all. He rode it 2 times and 2 laps in it blew up. He re did the cylinder again and before he even took it to the track I upped the pilot by 2 and adjusted the clip. He takes it to the track and the first thing he says is hey it doesn't spark knock anymore! Personally I think he's a hack job

If you've seen Eric's yz295 head design and then one that was properly done side by side you would understand.

I bought a yz with one of his 295 kits already installed. I checked the comp. on it because it ran good but I just wanted a base #. It was pretty low. I pulled the head and checked squish it was like .075 which is basically stock. And all EG did was cut a huge angle into the bowl to lower compression. So I took the head to work and cut .020 to get the squish around .055. It ran better but the head was still not right. Once I rebuilt the engine and got the cylinder replated by Millennium it had a bunch of compression but the head was not right. So Derek fixed the head and now it runs like it should, has good compression and a head on it that's not prone to detonation.

Derek has also ported a stock bore yz250 I used to own and it would run circles around a friends EG YZ295 race gas engine he had done.

And that's why I send my stuff to Derek at HP Bikes he has helped me out numerous times and even given me free stuff to test. As soon as I have time I will be taking my 295 apart and let him fix the half ass porting EG did on the cylinder.
