Lately on the web I have been bumping into crazy prices for pro level MX bikes. I have heard that a bike built for pros can cost up to and possibly over $50,000. I read those bikes can sell used for upwards of $30,000. Can someone in the know fill in the real world details? What does an XGames/Monster/ProAMA ect. 250f / 450f bike ridden by a pro really cost?

Depends on how much you want to spend.

Bike- 7,500-10,000
A-kit new- 10k
Motor- 5-10k (varies)
Pipe- 1k
Wheels- 1-2k

That right there is a potential 30k not even including misc items like brake parts, rotors, tires, bars, throttle body. If you want to go all titanium there's another chunk. Of course that's a pretty good race bike for a privateer and I'm sure the factory bikes is way more. Obviusouly you don't have to spend all that but those parts play a key component for being competive in the pros.

I believe it could be 40-50 pretty quick......also a lot of pieces you don't even think about are one off made to account for subtle changes to accommodate riders. With r&d and machine time, custom parts such as tanks can be in the 5..6..10 range. There was a thread not long ago about a titanium tank made for Stewart and I believe the total cost was 15k. It was just to narrow it a few millimeters but fully built from titanium. Its incredible what these teams spend on these bikes.

Id say 30k could get you a really really good privateer bike. Alot of cost on factory bikes is R&D and one off parts as far as i know. plus hours of testing and whatnot have to come into consideration. A good friend of mine bought a privateer level bike with 15 hours on it for $6400

K I've always been curious, what's the benefit of new wheels and hubs? Are they that much lighter to spend $1500?

Add a carbon subframe and tank to the list. You can spend 50k on a racebike without any problems.

2500-3000 for Brembo sxs calipers and oversize rotors etc.

More so about strength. My brother stayed at a training facility for a boot camp. He said as soon as the others got brand new bikes the first thing they did was switch out the wheels. They told him the stock wheels were junk.

Investing as a Pro or an Amatuer in a MX bike can have no limits except your wallet and wildest dreams.

In this bike alone I have well over 12K invested.

You can build a pro-level 450 for less than $20K all day.

Unless you have a Factory level R&D facility, whatever you build will be inferior to them. They have access to lots of data, tools, test equipment and $$$$. Don't forget top riders have the ability to communicate what they need a bike to do to help them go faster for longer. Sometimes it's not trick parts it's just good engineering.

I met a guy at a wedding recently that worked for Hendrick Motorsports as an engineer. We got to talking about motocross and as it turns out he worked for JGR during Stewart's brief stint. He said that they were using Cup team resources to build those gas tanks and it took them a few tries to get Stew's approval.

Did a privateer 450 several years ago.

Base 450F - $8000
A-Kit $9500
Motor package - $7000
Wheels & Ties - $1500
Clutch - $850
Ti - $2,500
Hard parts - ~$1500
Brake rotors & calipers - $750

I only listed the big stuff and that's already $31,600. I saw this bike sell for around $9500 1.5 years later as built. This particular guy had some money in the family and was not bothered by spending it on racing efforts.

A guy could for sure go a lot cheaper on the motor and suspension if needed. I agree that you could easily put together a privateer-competitive bike for under $20k all day long.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. I suppose I've never been fast enough to worry about tacoing a wheel.

Not bashing you PRM31, just the point of the article.

A bike you can build for $20K is currently wearing a red number plate in Canada and the chassis seems to be better suited to outdoor MX than the "Factory" bike doesLaughing

This! $20k is about right for a pro built bike!

When you start getting into the finer details of bikes and start testing with different parts and start to utilize lighter components, that's when things can go up from there.
