I cant see how they can move marketing out of that building! The building IS their marketing. This news cant be good for the big O die hards. I wonder what Janard is thinking?

Holy hell....

The comment section of that link has a few more interesting pieces of info.....One of which I posted below.

"It seems this article conveniently left off the fact that 400+ people lost their jobs today at the Oakley HQ. People were laid off so jobs can be moved to other states and other countries. Luxottica killed this brand and were absolutely terrible in doing business internally and with the public. From treating their employees like numbers, to implementing cheap manufacturing processes which are proven to yield lower quality (ultimately creating more known defects which were brushed under the rug). To them it is all about how much they can squeeze out of this company, not how to grow the brand or servicing the customers which keep Oakley alive. These lay-offs were completely avoidable. Customer Service, Warranty, Operations, Sales, Web, Accounting, and many other departments were dissolved today. From the start of this integration, these employees were lied to and put through a very unprofessional hell. Processes were implemented by luxottica which set everyone up for failure. People were told their jobs were safe only to find out that they were being laid off. They ran this brand into the ground and destroyed the Oakley DNA. I watched it first hand from the inside and out. Lux grabbed Oakley, wrapped their hands around its neck, and strangled it. 400 local people had to go home today and tell their loved ones that they were let go from a company they once loved. I am so glad that they went to the press before any employee could actually tell anyone what was going on. I hope everyone knows what really happened, not just the Lux version."

The kind of story you read every so often when a creative company is sold to a huge group...
Sad.

Luxottica owns the sunglasses business. Luxottica owns the insurance companies you use, LensCrafters where many go to get their eyes checked, sunglass hut where you go to buy your sunglasses. Then they control the little guys buy only supplying you their Ray Bans for example if you agree to remove non Luxottica brands and bring in their others such as Oakley. Big business sucks and it's why I won't support as best I can these companies. Like Amazon for example

Not surprising at all. 9 times out of 10 when a company is sold by its original owner(s) it is the beginning of the end. Rarely can a company acquire another business and continue its success even if that is the honest intention.

When you're involved in an organization and the owner decides to cash out it is probably time to leave, like it or not. I don't know that much about Oakley but it's the same old story time and time again for companies that were once great.

I wonder if this means they will not sponsor the Supercross series? I know they paid big to do that.

You'll love them, mine have been great. I had to switch to a clear lens though because it was hard to see rocks and bumps in shadows with that lens.

Oakley and MX were synergistic in each others rise. A lot owed to the original Oakley and how it supported the sport that supported it. Luxottica is not Oakley and impacting 400 families the way thay are, should not be respected as such. Dont let the door hit your ass on the way out. The reality is 400 families had their teeth kicked in and my thoughts go out to them.

Buisness has its ups and downs but be respectful to those that made your comapny go, even when your company can no longer go.

From Jannard's Facebook:

Devastated. LUX has officially dismantled everything it took decades to build. Shakes head. Rolls eyes. Deep depression. Building Oakley took inventions wrapped in art and an army of great people. It now has been reduced to a bottom line number. Sad day for me and everyone who invested their heart and soul in the "O".

What's not to understand? They monopolize markets and make it nearly impossible for many small businesses to do business

Wow. Sad for sure. All I've ever worn have been Oakleys. Guess I'll take my money to other goggle companies.

^^

But....bless him and his new ventures like Red, big fan and I appreciate his feeling...but really he reduced it to a bottom line number when he cashed out, and that a company like LUX reduces things to a bottom line number going forward is about as shocking as Captain Renoux discovering gambling at Rick's.

Sometimes you can't eat your cake and have it, too. There's a little eyeglass company back east named Shuron that has been around since the 30's and 40's whose designs have been ripped by most other manufacturers, including LUX's Ray Ban (eg. Ray Ban's clubman). Shuron frames are about half the price.

You want to preserve culture, don't give up control.

I was eyeing a pair of airbrakes with that new persimmons lens. Not anymore. This is the problem with the economy in America these days. Big company buys awesome small company, fires everybody that built it, moves he jobs to third world countries and sucks it dry until there is no more.

I worked for Oakley HQ for 8 years. I've been around the company since I was a kid... My uncle worked there for 30 years, my Dad did about 18 years, and my Aunt did about 15 years there. My Dad was lucky enough to work for Jim personally over the years, at Oakley, and at RED. Such a shame. Jim always told us that Oakley was his "first daughter" and he would always love her, but she grew up and moved out, and then he had another daughter (RED) that he needed to care for. Now that he's passed the RED torch to Jarred, rumor has it that he's working on something new, bigger and better than he's ever done before.

These changes at Oakley were inevitable with a buyout. Jim built a multi-billion dollar business and sold it at the right time. Luxottica is a monopoly. Watch the 60 minutes on them, it's pretty good.

I think Luxottica is a French company? Pretty sure not American but too busy right now to look.. I just wanted to say.

Fuck. For a smart guy, he was either blinded by $$$$$ or not street smart at all. This is what these companies do. Buy, gut people, use the brand name to profit. He should have seen this coming if he really cared about the company and the brand he built

Thank you for posting that. I now know that although they are different brands, my perscription glasses, casual sunglasses, and riding goggles are all made by Lux. Holy shit!

Here's the thing... Luxottica owns Sunglass Hut, Lenscrafters, and many many other eyewear retailers. When they say that they will no longer sell Oakley products, that can make a huge impact on Oakley sales. Yes, Oakley has their own stores, but to try and fight Luxottica, it would be a losing battle. LUX is an $18B company.

Trust me, coming from the inside, Jim truly cared about the brand, the innovation, the design, the culture, and the employees. Even after the sell, he would be in the Oakley offices trying to direct the design team in the right direction. He was in meetings with the LUX executives... sometimes getting into heated arguments with them on what they were trying to do. Although he had no official say, he tried.

Just so it's noted, Jannard sold Oakley back in 2007. It's not like he sold the company as of recent and Lux immediately flipped the script. I wonder if there was a clause in the initial sale where they couldn't dismantle the group or make certain changes for a number of years. I'm sure he's sincerely gutted about what has transpired.

In any case it sucks knowing 400 folks lost their jobs in a deceitful move by Lux. I'll never buy another Oakley product again. Sure glad I already support and have 10+ sets of EKS Goggles.

My friends and I used to ride our bikes to the old factory in Irvine, across from Kawasaki, and dumpster dive for Blades parts!

I was able to ride their pump track and jumps in Foothill Ranch with friends a couple years ago.

As a long time OC resident, that company is special to a lot of us. Very sad to see it go.

The building will still remain albeit with a skeleton crew. Engineering, development and design will still be handled through that office.

Very cool! Wish the MX track would have worked out. Peters built it, and James was the only one to ride it for a Yamaha intro deal. The neighboring companies and insurances put the dreams of employees and friends/family having a place to ride!

The BMX jumps and pump track are awesome. They used to have a half pipe as well. The full size indoor basketball court was cool too, but that was removed years and years ago to make room for office space.
