$9299 for a 2016 KTM 450 SXF!

7/7/2015 2:26am Edited Date/Time 7/7/2015 2:28am
My new DH bike costs this much, with a new mx bike you're getting a lot more, not saying it's justified but it kind of is.

First world problems suck don't they.

Maybe KTM are just going to keep increasing their price, success of the bike contributes heavily, it's the lightest out there, it's got tech that others don't, plus the fact they need every extra pound due to the hundred million MOTOGP program in progress.

England is looking at £7200 so about 11,500 dollars wtf !

I'll stick with 2nd hand mx bikes, sad but true.

Pretty much. Here's the thing though, and I think a lot of guys here are missing it. You DO NOT have to spend anywhere near that amt of money to get a good bike (moto or Mountain bike). Used 125/250 2 strokes are everywhere for 2-3k, sink a grand into them and you've got a killer weekend machine that's still competitive in the hands of the right rider at the right event. Need an FI four stroke? Buy one 2-3 years old for 3-4k and have the motor redone for a grand, you're ready to rock. Buy a clearance model for 6000-6500 if you MUST have a new bike. Sorry if this offends some you guys, but if you're not an AMA pro and you're spending $9200 on a friggin dirt bike....you might need a reality check.

As for the MTB's, there are great deals out there if you just bide your time and look around. I just picked up a Rocky Mtn full susp (fox/marzocci), shimano hydro discs, pro taper bars, etc. for $400. It was an older guy who rode it a few times then got sick and it had sat for 3 years. I coulda spent $5000 on a new one...but why?

This sport (and MT) can be as expensive as the manufacturers want it to be. Or you can use your ingenuity, be patient, wait for a deal and enjoy the ride for 1/4 the cost. Just my $.02.

My local dealer just called and told me that is the MSRP. We are now over the 9K mark for a dirt bike. It makes the Kawi seem like a steal at $8799. Hell, left over 15 RMZ's are getting blown out for $6500 around here. That looks like the bargain of a lifetime.

At the current exchange rate, USD to AUD, the 16' 450 has an MSRP of $8900 USD vs $9299 over here. You are getting the better deal.

That is a lot but I wonder what they will actually sell for? MSRP doesn't translate to what they will actually go for. I bought my 2015 KX450F about a month after they came out last year and I believe the MSRP was $8,600 or $8,700 and I paid $7,500 out the door with everything included. They are going for around ~$6,500 out the door now. My next bike will be a 2016 KX450F but I'll buy it around this time next year when the '17's come out.

Ridiculous for a fucking dirt bike. Would much rather buy a used $2k YZ250 and put all new parts on it for another $2k, have fun doing it, and have a great bike for $4k.

2016 KTM 450 SF costs here 10080 dollars + 300-500 to unbox it. Honda crf450 only 9500 dollars.

You want that top mounted remote control? No problem, that'l be an extra $1200 mounted and ready to go! (i'l grab the stock remote control so i can sell it later to another victim) And about $400 for the throttle and shift cable.

Don't know who did you electricity on that boat but it has to be re-done, it's a mess. Another $500 and it's picture perfect!

Seems like the old batteries need to be replaced, the main switch is corroded as well, the main power cables are green and brittle so i can't really leave it like that. Down side is, it takes some time to get those to the cabine so that makes it expensive on labour. But i'l cut you some slack and do it for $600 including the switch and both semi-traction batteries.

I'l try to get it done before you leave on your holiday, but i can't promise anything.

So here are my OTD price options

2015 RMZ450 $6600 OTD
-Pros: I already have about 3k in spare parts that'll bolt right on
-Cons: It's a pig and pretty close to the bike I already have (2011)

2016 KX450 $8050 OTD
-Pros: All new, light weight and should be an easy bike to adapt to coming off the Suzuki. It's on the dealership floor and I can have it today
-Cons: It's a brand new design and may have some kinks to work out

2016 KTM 450 SXF $8200 OTD (after a $300 voucher from the demo day)
-Pros: E-start, light weight, great components
-Cons: I rode one for 4 laps and wasn't blown away. If I buy one, I'll be kind of hoping the factory connection can make me love it. I'd also have to wait another 5-6 weeks.

I'm torn. I suppose my 4th option is wait till the spring and have basically 5 all new 450's to choose from. Maybe Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki has a trump card up their sleeve. I will say this. If you are in the market for a new 450, we are approaching the best time. It looks as though all of the big 5 either have for 16 or will have for 17 some major changes and weight reduction.

Bruce372, you picked a great time to go on vacation and be away from your phone. If you were here I would be blowing up your data plan with text messages looking for advice.

For the life of me I can't figure out why a decent Mt Bike is $6K, and that's a middle of the road bike.

From my research and what I've been told by those who would know, you can get a great bike for about $3500. After that, it's less about the bike and more about the materials they use. That's usually the crossover point from aluminum to carbon fiber. From $3500 up you are mostly paying for weight savings. Imagine a KTM450 for 9299 and then one with a carbon sub frame for 9499, Ti bolt kit for 9999 and so on.

become buddies with someone that works at a bike shop. I would always buy my bikes from someone that worked at a shop. They would ride the bike for a year and then sell it to me (lucky we rode same size frame). Would get top end bikes for half the price. I got a good price and then they would get the new year model for basically what I paid them, win/win for both of us. Crazy mark up on bicycles.

Bikes are expensive now, it is what it is. The used bike market is full of awesome "bought it and didnt like it now selling a brand new bike" deals.

Sleds are even crazier, easy to spend $15k on a snowmobile now.

Nah, that's high end. My enduro style bike retailed for about $6700 with all the best parts on it you can get. Now, you switch out my frame and wheels for carbon frame and wheels and you are at $10,000.

While I totally agree that prices for bikes are CRAZY now, at least the KTM has had tons of updates/weight savings (aka, actually improving from the previous model year in a big way).

With median income decreasing in the US. If you make a $100k a year, its 10% of your income. This sounds like a broken model to me and why the Japanese are on a 4 year cycle on bikes (refinements each year before radically changing the bike). One of the biggest threats to the sport is cost --- and the Japanese are aware of this issue.
Agreed. With employers just hiring more, not really paying more, it’s pretty tough for the average person to afford a hobby requiring that initial cost. It was mentioned in a column that $9k for today’s bike isn’t all that bad compared to $6k for a bike in 2000 after adjusting for inflation. The problem is average annual inflation of ~3% is greater than most pay increases people have seen during that time. $9k isn’t much easier to rationalize today than it was 15 years ago.

I have reason to believe there are larger margins in the bicycle industry accounting for the stupid prices for a rolling chassis. It’s not uncommon to see a $5k MTB on sale for 30% off within a year of its release. There are 2015 MTB’s already on sale for 25% off in my area and that’ll turn into 30-40% within 6 months. I'm pretty sure you won’t be seeing advertisements for a $9,299 2016 KTM on sale for $5,600 next summer.

My friend in the UK just tried to get one of the first 250sxf2016 and they are sold out of the first batch already.

There is so much hype over the ktms and people are paying bank for them.

As for bicycles, check out bikesdirect....when you see some of the components they use, it makes you laugh that so many people ars paying twice as much for a brand name bike.

TREKS are the most expensive ive seen, yet ive never seen one out on the road, but only ever parked outside Starbucks.

The way I look at it and to justify the cost of a brand new ktm 350 to my wife is that this particular bike comes with the better parts and quality already on it. It also is a new gen model that shouldn't get any major changes for the next 3-4 yrs. Im getting what I consider the best deal on it that you could probably get for a new ktm and last but not least....Im financially stable and work my ass off! My goal is to ride 1-2 times a week and race as much as my schedule will let me. Besides a revalve and an exhaust down the road, ill be good to go for hopefully a long time. I love my 2 stroke but getting to old to race it...ill race it in the sand though

I have an 11 with all of the parts you listed including a full Rekluse Core EXP that will all bolt right in but I'm wanting to try something new. From my understanding, the 15 is just my 11 with minor changes and an air fork.

I actually have radiator braces, complete body kits with graphics (x 2), Rekluse core exp, 2 Yosh full systems (one Ti and one SS), oversized rotor kit, probably a dozen twin air filters, spare seat and countless other parts. After all that, I still wanted to try something new this year. Maybe I shouldn't. In fact, maybe I should just keep my 11.
there huge changes between the 11 and 15 rmz ,

Motocross is still a cheap sport. What other motor sport can you finance your race equipment. Not sprint cars. Not late models. Not go carts. Not drag cars. Unless you're racing the stock classes. Come on guys. You're getting a lot for 9 grand. Something that the right person can compete with on the professional level.

I disagree. People get home equity loans everyday, and write them checks to go racing!
