The majority of factory bikes are dismantled and destroyed for liability reasons.

Chamionship bikes that are given to the riders wont have any moving parts inside the engine, just a shell so nobody cantake it apart.
That just seems like a dirty shame and a waste!Pinch I mean really.....what the hell is so important that needs to be guarded like that?.

Its not like they are parts that can be assembled into a machine that enriches uranium.!Huh These works bikes arent some magical cure for cancer that can be sold to the highest bidder!

Liability? Its "used" parts!... so Id say to anyone good luck with a lawsuit on that even if an unobtainum part flies off and cleans out a nearby crowd!

And is it really worth hiding anything these days? Everyone blabs about everything TO SOMEONE who eventually tells someone else anyway.Whistling

I think leaving the unobtanium bikes out there can create new ideas that further technology on the bikes themselves.

If certain things are such an advantage that these factories dont want to let the comp see......Id like to hear about examples.

OK rant overLaughing coffee kicking in now!Wink

Doesn't matter to me if it does or doesn't. About all it means to me is it went through tech inspection for a pro level event and some pro swung his leg over it.
No idea who but just curious.

In 1978 Bob Hannah raced a stock YZ-250. Won some races on it. And Yamaha auctioned it off as part of a sales promo. At least that is how I remember the story.

I wonder where that bike is. Pure stock YZ-250, but with some unique history.

In Kawasaki's case, many bikes are part of a loan pool system. They must be returned to stock and sent back at the end of the year. They are then auctioned off internally, with the remainder going to dealers in a used batch purchase.
I have worked on a few loan pool bikes the past year one had a works rear caliper on it. Another was Tim Ferry's LL bike from 2013 IIRC. Some were in great shape others just hammered.

Not a full factory bike but I got my from JGR. tons of Engine mods, dlc coatings, parts, and a bunch of modifications that i keep noticing by little makings on the frame, seat and tank, The bike rides nothing like a stock bike. Way too much for a rider like myself. if you ever get the chance to do business with JGR you'll be amazed! Everyone is super cool.

Overseas for sure, the steep pitch roofs, white plastics, yellow backgrounds and the logos give it away. Yes probably Holland, Belgium or France I can only guess.

They weren't 100% factory but factory supported. Mine is complete even having the HRC transmission, only missing the suspension A kit in which I have now. In the process of restoring it. Some bikes are obtainable and slip through the cracks with all the parts. I know you can go to procircuit and buy their left overs but will be stripped mostly all the parts.

I watched the bike being auctioned. Florida Winter -Am. It was supplied by Barney's Yamaha of St. Pete , if I recall. I believe the St. Pete round of the Winter -Am was the final event of the four round series. It was new at the beginning of the series.

By auction time , the bike looked like it had a full season on it. YZ250E.

Having spent some time with Mike Bell, 1980 SX Champion (brought him out East to teach MX classes at ACR VMX events), I got to hear his stories of the end of the year disposal of Factory parts.

As per Mike;

Hand built feather light OW tanks launched into the Race Shop's driveway from the loading dock via long handle sledge hammers using a golf swing.

Prying open wooden crates with the current year OW engines and driving punches through the cases before sending them to the dumpsters.

I stopped him at this point as I could not hear any more, I was crying and dying at the same time.

Still leaves a pit in my stomach just writing this.

They did something similar at several Supercrosses. Hannah supposedly liked the handling of the production bike better than the works bike, so they bolted a few key pieces on the production bike and he raced them. After the race, the bikes were given to the raffle winner after the few "works" pieces were replaced. I'd heard that the production bikes had their frames gusseted well ahead of time, but never saw pictures of it. Made sense, though........

Haha i wish!.
Ive got a few goodies and some complete bikes in my personal collection but i buy the satellite team bikes from TLD,Star, pro circuit, rockstar and some teams that are no longer about ,some are put back to new stock and some get released as race bikes because the team have switched brands, the bikes changed in a major way or the teams have closed completely, then you get the good stuff, either way we seem to sell them ok,its a ball ache collecting them, paying up front for them ALL without viewing ( i bought 46 bikes from the canadae kawasaki team once and had to wire the money sight un-seen,that made me a little nervous) though mostly its about 20 bikes at a time.
I send the money ahead of time as i dont want to fly in,view the bikes then wire the money and wait about in a hotel room waiting for it to clear, ive bought bikes from these guys for the last 10 years and weve got a good understanding going.
then arrange container shipping to the uk,then fully pdi the bikes as its no secret that the mechanics dont really want to be building sale bikes so theyre all done in a rush and are not often ready for use.
The full on factory bikes dont get sold, well ive never got any(well a couple ive kept myself). Most are built from parts then dissasembled again and the parts are put on the shelf untill theyre obsolete and then thrown in the skip some 3 or 4 years down the line.

There are builders out there like me who are capable of building a replica of our favorite old 80's works bikes if you have enough money I will build you an exact replica of any bike you want. seanfries43@aol.com

Sweet looking stuff.

What all can you get or make and what kind of prices are you asking for them?

Do you have some models that you prefer to build or have better availability on parts?

Interested in hearing more.

A buddy of mine purchased a set of Stewarts works forks that came off of one of his old kx250's he raced on. They were super trick, but my buddy had a hard time getting custom triple clamps made for the forks in order for them to be mounted on his bike. He told me he called many company's to see if he can get some made and at Emig racing they Even asked him how he got those forks because there should be no way any body of the public should have those forks in their possession. He wouldn't tell me where he got them but all i can guess is somebody from the inside snagged them.
If there the 46mm works forks the 02-03 kx clamps fit .I've got a set

In 1981-83 I had a Honda deal where I got bikes for about half of dealer price, around $700-$800 each, 250's & 480's. The first time I ever went down to Honda to pick up a couple of bikes my girl friend and I walked into the wrong area of the shop. The first thing I see is a cage with nothing but works bikes behind it, and probably some stock ones to, but all my eyes could see is a bunch of trick factory stuff. Well the next door we go through brings us right into the factory road race department where they were working on the new, hasn't been seen or raced yet factory V45's and we were promptly escorted back out the doors in a matter of seconds and grilled on what we were doing there. After we explained what we were doing there the gentleman found the person that I needed and I picked up a couple bikes and headed back home. I asked the guy though "what do you do with the trick stuff ?" and in a nut shell what he told me was some stuff is taken off and they continue to test with it and the rest is destroyed, he didn't say how, he just said it was destroyed. When I asked if I could have anything, anything at all haha he just looked at me like really ya dumb ass kid ?

No factory teams take of used parts to see how they held up and sometimes put the stuff on other practice bikes to continue testing for various reasons. You need to remember back in the day there were some very very one off trick things and things were changing allot an often. Long travel, single shocks, water cooling, disc brakes, power valves, there's a long long list of things that were changing. But if you weren't around racing back in the 70's and early 80's you wouldn't know.Woohoo

Anyone know if getting a jgr leftover is still doable? I've been toying with getting rid of my 250f and getting a 450 for a while, if I could snap one of these up I think I might have to pull the trigger

Bikes get torn down and parts shipped back to their shops. Look at what reed did last year, had photos posted of boxes and boxes of parts being returned. Some parts stick around their own shops or at the race shops. sometimes parts make it out as hand me downs or are used for other bikes.
