No sweat at all Jeffro. Just to be clear, while RV is in the title of this thread, my main point was Dungey has earned and deserves respect by all. Both are bad dudes on dirt scooters!

Oh hell yeah!! Being RV was a NW boy i always rooted for him , but always dug the hell out of Dungey. Ryan is truly one the very best this sport has ever seen. I mean towards the very top! They don't call that guy captain America for nuthin'!!

Jeremy McGrath. He is the worst as far as the way he talks about his racing career. Everything he says is defensive, he comes off as almost insecure, living in the glory days. Do I give a fuck? No. But I find it ridiculous that Ricky Carmichael was criticized in this thread for the way he talks about his racing days. These guys are competitors at the highest level.

Anyway, I agree with OP, Villopoto is a top-notch champion and obviously respects the hell out of Dungey.

Man Justin , I couldn't disagree more. Maybe some of his " later in life " interviews came off that way , but if you grew up watching every one of his " after race " interviews ,I think you would have a better understanding about how super cool MC really was. I think you're 26yrs old right? Which means MC started winning in the big bike class when you were 2 years old. For the next 8 years in SX , MC was king. And even though most nights he would completely demoralize a lot of the racers , he was very humble in doing so. When RC came in and took the spot light away from MC , it demoralized him , and he started getting beat by guys that he had been beating badly for the past 8 years. But in all the years Jeremy was winning , you would be hard pressed to find a more humble champion. Especially one that was as dominant as MC was.

In SX , MC will always be king.

Sorry OP , I didn't want to jump on the derailment here. Just posted thoughts on MC.
Well yeah that's what we're talking about. How Villopoto handled his career post retirement compared to Carmichael. All I said was that Jeremy is the worst, in my eyes, POST retirement, yet he gets a free pass in the conversation.

RV is a boss. Raced hard but fair, took no shit and gave no shit. Won his titles and retired at the top with no drama.

Always respected his opponents as well.

Legend of the sport.

My bench mark from a young age was James Stewart, I watched RV closely to see if he could match James in his prime.. I think he did it at the end of his career he was unbelievable.

What makes RV stand out from the rest in my opinion is his mental strength, I'm pretty sure I saw a interview with him when he was like 11 he said he wants to be pro because he never wants to work, when A kid realises that early on its a recipe of a true champion... That was his determination and he got it.

He's up there with RC/JS/2 in terms of high level high skill riding.

I wish he was still out there.

Yeah that was an unfortunate deal, I really wish he would have given it another shot no doubt in my mind he could have won that, the guy just knew how to win.

Agreed. I was so stoked for that deal.

Kind of crazy how RVs public image has done a full 360 in retrospective of his career, and how much at the time he was panned for being a general malcontent.

6 year old thread resurrection!

I think RV is still a malcontent...and I mean that in the best way possible.   RV is an "every man" figure now.    Riding/racing for fun, knocking back beers and shootin the shit.

KInd of guy I would hang out with.

I heard that RV had very little social life while he was growing up. It was very structured and strict, all about the racing.

Very happy for him that he was able to retire based on his wishes and live life the way he wants. That's the way it

should be to be able to retire on your own terms. That guy worked his ass off!

Someone must have some quotes from his interview on pulp? He was there with Weimer. Paints another (arguably better) picture of RV.

This is the difference between RV and RC, and why I respect RV far more as a champ than RC.

When you hear RV reflect on his career, he elevates his competitors, is open about his mistakes and challenges, and gives more credit to his team than himself. RC does that, but only in a way to reflect how great he was, and when others bring up mistakes he made, he gets offended. Just go back a few years when he started commentating with Emig and listen to how he reacts any time Emig brought up one of RC's crashes or losses, even in a joking way. RC made it clear that joking about Emig's career was fine, but you can't bring up anything RC ever did wrong. It gets old after a while.

I really wish RV had just taken a year off, or a summer off to re-charge. Monster should have had a longer-term vision and allowed him to postpone the last year of his contract.

I agree. It is mildly embarrassing to listen to. RC was great, but he is retired. He can give up the attitude now. Jeff Emig is extremely professional when talking about his past racing. Often joking about his mistakes and flaws. Doing that makes for good listening.

Obviously you have no clue how Emig is in person. 🤣🤣🤣

The dude is too cool for school.
