Its simple, he still has the fire in his belly. Juat wants to win and loves what he does. You don't ever hear him complain about missing a school dance or being a kid....

He's got more natural talent than most, massive ego, and is a very smart racer. He's also been shown to be tough and durable (got some aboriginal genes in there)! IMO Aussies are tougher and have more balls than us Americans these days. We've become a nation of wusses.

Aborigine blood.
In all seriousness, as Zyck said above, JT has many times stated Reed is a freak regarding training, he can suffer and go to another level... I'd be pretty confident saying his lineage helps in this regard. His talent is what it is, high, maybe the reactions aren't quite the same - maybe, but i'd bet his ability to get back in shape and feel good is a big reason outside his desire to do it. If the body wasn't cooperating, it wouldn't matter if he wanted to.

The Australian Football League (AFL) or Aussie rules down here, is brutal, and the Aboriginal players are amazing in their ability to keep going and going and going and their speed up and down the field is crazy. One of the very elite players here just retired at 36 and honestly he retired because of factors outside his fitness/health/ability.

Y'all might have to keep bitching about Reedy for a few years yet!

If RC got motivated and trained again no doubt he'd be winning too. Same as James is still in the mix. 3 of the fastest. Who all could fly in two strokes and that's what probably did it for them- corner speed.
The funny thing is chad said he was losing time in the corners to dungey.

I'd say these things are why he's at where he's at:

Skill. Talent. Hard Work. Dedication. Passion. Commitment. Will. Desire.

Side note while talking about getting tired of winning:

Does anyone see the change happening in RD5? His podium speech at San Diego, he mentioned something about getting burned out. It definitely reminded me of RV's speeches when you could really tell he was getting bored with winning.

Weird, anyone else notice this with Dungey?
I'm pretty sure the "burned out" comment was made in relation to finding ways to continue to have fun and prevent the burn out.

Despite his age, this season has got to be easier on him as he has a huge load off of his shoulders. I think running the team and being the star rider is just too much for any one person. Now he can concentrate on fitness and riding ... and then relax instead of signing checks and having to make a million decisions.

My concern is that I hope he doesn't get over confident. When he feels he is the fastest guy out there bad things have happened i.e. San Diego SX 2014 and the infamous Millville Chadapault.

Hopefully the YZ is more forgiving.
Dallas 2012, I believe, as well.

Big Reed fan, but there's a bit of truth to this, maybe coincidence?

Some of you guys act like he is 70. He's 33 which isn't that old. Look at a lot of professional triathletes or cyclists.

I'm thinking Dungey retires after this season or next, depending on if he wins the title or not. He's newly married and mentioned wanting to build his house in his hometown during that A1 segment. Perfect time to settle down and start a family IMO.
You couldn't be more wrong. I'll make sure to dig this thread up when Dungey is lining up for A1 in 6 years.
Don't be surprised. He has said he is going to wait to start a family until after he's done racing. Don't think he means waiting until he's 35 to have kids. I say this year and next year then he'll retire.

"No More Mister Nice Guy"

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
Until Yamaha got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see

I got no friends 'cause they read MXA
They can't be seen with me and my contacts getting shot down
And I'm feeling mean
No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he's back, he's Chad Reed

I got no friends 'cause they read Vital posts
They can't ride with me and I'm getting down
And I'm gettin' mean
No more mister nice guy
No more mister clean
No more mister nice guy
They say, he's back, he's Chad Reed

Barcia bit me on leg today
Roczen clawed my eye (why)
Ellie’s been thrown out of society circle
Pop's had to hide
I went to church incognito
When everybody rose, the Reverend Erv Braun
He recognized me and
Punched me in the nose

Monster said, no more mister nice guy
No more, mister Team Green
No more, mister nice guy
Monster said, your back, your Chad Reed
No more mister nice guy
No more, mister Team Green
No more, mister nice guy
Monster said, your back, your Chad Reed
(Re-re-re-Reed, re-re-re-reed, re-re-re-reed, hew!)

Mentally tough, not scurred
That's what I was going to say. I think the problem with older guys isn't their talent, skill, or fitness. This sport is very mental. Age creeps in and we start getting scared. I'm guessing Reed has a way of finding motivation. He still wants it more than he wants to breathe. That's what it takes.

He also has a very efficient riding style, very smooth and not as taxing as some of the other riders both current and in history. The guy has a set view on what he's looking for from the motorcycle and won't push to the upper echelons of his ability unless that "feeling" has been achieved (picking this all up from his interviews over the yrs).

that's right, the poster above said he was mentally tough....not strictly true when it comes to not having the feeling in the bike, we have all seen him struggle mentally when he isn't happy with the bike over the past few years.

let's not forget he is sx only. don't want to take anything away of his sx performance but if we speak outdoors he just can't keep up which i understand absolutely. different intensity, training etc required.

I think you can credit his longevity to a few things, but they all add up:

1 - The younger Reed was very fast but still in control. He didn't hit the deck as much as his nemesis and didn't seem to have as many lingering or nagging injuries. His riding style works well as an older rider too, as opposed to a checkers or wreckers mentality. Always there, always fast, always consistent. I have no academic proof on my next theory, but I'd guess that Dungey picked up some of his "be in it to win it" strategy from watching Reed.
2 - Mid career Reed had a few SX only seasons, which probably helped with burnout.
3 - Old Reed is fiery because regardless of podiums, he probably still doesn't have as many wins as he wants. And the crowd goes nuts any time a vet gets anywhere near the front (remember Windham a few years back), so I'm guessing that keeps him pretty pumped on being out there. I think being on somebody else's team again and being able to focus just on riding is probably a great feeling for him as well.

Amazing stats for that guy, and it's not over yet!

All his career he has had to prove himself. Now so more than ever.

His determination to so is what still drives him.

I guess we can thank the haters for that.

No shit dude, I've never understood this thing with MX fans repeating over and over that late 20s is old age, way past prime, and so forth. It's absurd and doesn't seem to based on much of anything. Yes it is true that many riders retire that early, mostly through injury pileup or having nothing left to accomplish. But an excess of injuries is not the same as your body being naturally past is prime athleticism. Dane Scott (think that's the name) won an Ironman at 40 against a bunch of 20 somethings. And of course either Brady or Manning are going to be in the super bowl again this year in their (very) late 30s and both have been in the last two.

The guy just has amazing racing and supercross skills......Kevin Windham said its like he has eyes in the back of his head. Very hard to pass and since his pace is so fast, that makes it even harder. That doesn't go away with age. Just his fitness and soon his reflexes will suffer, but it looks like for one more year at least, he is competitive. If you ask me, his biggest problem has always been having the bike perfect.

Slightly off topic, but we get AFL games on some obscure cable channel Friday nights. I find myself watching entire games, even though I'm not 100% sure of all the rules. Those are some tough dudes for sure. The pitch is huge. The ref has to get tired of blowing that damn whistle all game long.

Back on topic, Reed is a bad ass. I would love to go on a road bike ride with him (the kind you pedal).
