What is truth to you?

i literally defined it...... Emphasis on the 'fact' part of the definition.
it was intended as abit of a tongue in cheek nudge but you clearly want to make this part of the discussion so i'm game. after all there is no right and wrong when it comes to opinions.

but i will bite the bait and I will add that i believe people can have different perceptions of the same truth but ultimately there is a universal truth not an individual one.
Would you have an issue if i said "the earth doesn't exist we're living suspended in cottage cheese, that's my fact"?
Fact is a universal, as should truth be. without it our legal systems aren't worth a wank.

It's no bait and I respect your answer very logical. A lot of "truths" or "facts" are from a "official" source and people blindly believe it...
It's no bait and I respect your answer very logical.

A lot of "truths" or "facts" are from a "official" source and people blindly believe it without researching or testing or seeing it for themselves as ryno said 'that's borrowed knowledge', I really like that term.

People like Ryno Are the way they are because they have seen or witnessed something that is different from official facts, once that has happened they stop taking everything being sold or told to them for face value in otherwords intelligence/wisdom.

My moment was when I was 16 feeling like shit health wise I went to a doctor to see what's up, he did his thing took blood test told me to come back when results are, I came back and sat infront of a man who was 20 years or so older than me and 10 years of education and he tells me I'm in great health, i thought well no I am not I feel fucking terrible.

I did some research and came to a to a conclusion on what my body needs and what lifestyle changes I need to make to fix myself, i backed myself got what I thought I needed done and made a full recovery, I told the doctor and he said I'm full of shit, I haven't seen a doctor since.

Thanks for the chat.
sorry i didn't mean it to sound like you were baiting me, that was a poor choice of words on my part. I meant i'm happy to engage in this conversation.
I also feel disengaged with alot of current medical professionals but my experience has been more that they are under stress from targets and time frames, not to mention seeing all the hypochondriacs, that they just churn people out like a meat grinder. Rarely do i feel like they pay any attention to what i'm really saying, so i can empathise with your view and experience.
I think alot of "official sources" have had their weight diminished due to so much of our 'traditional' consumption of information becoming outdated. As such they're spewing clickbait, shock-news and misleading information solely to maintain relevance, this has lead to distrust in all of the "old school" sources of information. I do like to use my own experiences and reasoning (however unsound it may be, i've had a few head injuries) and i am skeptical of all information given to me. Now i'm not saying i'm right or even that what anyone else says isn't. I think the issue i had, even though it was meant light heartedly, is that people are redefining words that don't require redefinition for the purpose of giving their view, opinion or experience as the only one. This isn't to take away from their experience and everyone is more than welcome to believe what they like, i just don't like the language useage and that isn't to have a dig at Luke11. Like i said there's no right or wrongs with opinions and that's just mine.
Thank you for the amicable exchange, i think it's a shame that so many interactions aren't this way when it comes to online discussions.
have a good one

Ryno is most certainly a character. He's also delusional (telling Marvin in an insta post how to ride?! - good advertising I guess?). Then again, I'd argue we're all delusional to some extent.

As I pointed out elsewhere, we humans have all sorts of awesome abilities, the least of which is our ability to be analytical and weigh someone's thoughts depending on who they are. I love listening to Ryno talk about riding, and he compels me to think in new ways, which is fun!

However he has expertise in a specific area of a very specific sport. Knowing why someone might be worth listening to is important. Its also equally as important to know why (and where) someone might *not* be worth listening to.

One mistake I made when I was younger in life is putting athletes on a pedestal in all aspects of life. This is obviously less than smart. I don't need to heed political advice from an NBA player any more than I need to heed philosophical advice from a motocrosser. (But it can still be entertaining)

Want to get some cool ideas as to how to live a better life? Cool, I'd wager we'd all be a lot better off getting our "life advice" listening to the likes of Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Lex or Friedmans or a bazillion other critical thinkers in the space. People who have dedicated their lives to philosophy, psychology, neuroscience and understanding the world around us. Ryno is not one of these dudes. He has created an interesting "reality" around him, but I'd give his 'I'm my own guru' philosophical advice very little weight when applying it to your own life.

The big takeaway? You can take what you like, and leave what you don't. That's okay. That's smart. I for one want to see more people willing to think outside the box and courageously voice their opinions. You just have to leave room for being wrong. Wink

People who say he’s losing his mind are sleep walking through life in my opinion.
If you’ve done any internal work you would see he is actually very ‘woke’ this doesn’t mean everything he says is gospel but everything he says is his own 100% truth and ryno being ryno has the confidence to really back himself. He can also see through peoples bullshit, 99% of people speak and act from a place of past trauma and what they think people/society want or expect them to do or say.

Obviously anything riding related I think should be listened to, anything else you’ve got to do your own research on.

One thing is, I’m sure ryno is very happy in his own life the way he is living it right now.

I have a slight grievance with your use of "his truth". The definition of truth is "that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality." So there is only one truth or reality and i'm not sure Ryno's reality lines up with anyone else at this point. :D

I'll precursor this with the fact i like Ryno, i like that he's polarising and i think he provides a lot of good technique advice.
but, and there is a but, he seems to nose dive through a sentence from legit advice to pseudoscience and ends at quackery. That makes it very hard to be all in with him.
As an example, and i'm paraphrasing, during the GT podcast he says about riding on your toes and flowing (legit advice) he transitions to "running with your glove shoes to help develop your feet and how trail running is the best thing ever as it forces you to go into a flow state (no evidence provided and anecdotal at best) and his pièce de résistance is to watch the sunset for the red light state and make sure you're barefoot so you're "grounded". He even used the term "bio-hack".

If you don't mind sifting through and cherry picking the useful factoids then he's great but you will have to stand there and deflect some of his particular brand of BS. However, i'm all for the eccentric characters in our sport.

How different is standing in front of sunrise to the red light therapy all top athletes are doing? Maybe less powerful, but free and as nature intended...

I’m not a ryno dick rider but the guy isn’t losing his mind, he see’s the world differently since his awakening, and is happier, better human being for it.
don't get me wrong, i'm not denying him the right to think and feel what he want's but that's not his truth. It's his perception of the truth. It doesn't devalue it to him. But when we start using "my truth" or "their truth" we're basically saying you aren't allowed to question it. Of course we can, that's the beauty of discussion and i don't think we shouldn't be able to. You misunderstand my view and i apologise if i haven't been clear enough in my explanation. This wasn't a personal attack on yourself. My issue is with psudeo-science and quoting stuff as fact when in reality it's not undergone any form of peer reviewed study. Yes Red light therapy works and he's getting the free version from nature that's fine, the issue i had was the bare foot "grounding" bio hack......that's up their with Reiki healing and other quackery. Again to reiterate if he wants to do that then please do, but he is an 'influencer' (i hate that term) and so he should probably state these are his views and opinions of which he's formed himself and not in any scientific or unbiased way. that's all. Like i said i think he's a colourful character and something that MX needs, just maybe not like the self professed Moto-messiah he's trying to make himself :D

I don’t take it personally, it’s nice to have an intelligent discussion with someone rather than a ‘bro’ getting butt hurt and saying something stupid.
You are allowed to question someone’s truth, but you can’t say something is bull shit if you haven’t studied it or read in depth papers of an independent study done on that subject etc etc etc or know refutable sources who have and can cite them.

You can poo-poo grounding and reiki and all these things, I take the piss out of my wife for some of this shit too, but you can’t dismiss it unless you have facts and studies to back it up. Look at wim hof. People would say he’s a kook and full of shit until independent studies were done on him and proved he actually changes his physiology through his breathing/medatitive techniques to do incredible things.

If you’re not smart enough (not you personally) to know that ryno is speaking from his experience of what works for him and he’s not a scientist and what works for him might not work for you then that’s the least of your worries.

i can see the point you're making and i will acknowledge there is alot of stuff out there that needs further study. I just don't feel like Ryno is an example of that. Like JT on pulp saying this seems like it's going to blow up big and we were all just stood there watching. I'm not denying that Ryno has had experiences that have guided him to this viewpoint but he has also done a fair amount of psychedelic's (or at least he's alluded to) and the science of how that affects the brain and synapses are pretty clear. Again that's moulded his perception of the truth of which he's entitled to. i just don't think him preaching these learnt experiences as fact is particularly healthy, i agree that a person is accountable for what information they personally digest (again not yourself specifically) however i feel the average joe is worryingly and increasingly less likely to look at it the way you or I might do. This new trait is seen in the fact that conspiracy theories are getting more and more common (and not the ones that might make sense the ones that are ridiculous).

The reason so many people believe crazy conspiracies is the inability to think logically for themselves, because the education system in most westernised countries doesn’t teach this, they teach how to pass exams with high scores which in teen reflects well on the school which leads to higher revenue.... but I’m way off on a tanjent, that’s a whole other story and we’ve hi-jacked this thread.

Been a pleasure debating with you sir haha

All i see is a former top rider who had a really tough time and is now seeking attention. And i don't believe him to be in a perfect frame of mind... Rather on the edge of becoming crazy.

Giving "free coaching" on instagram to guy who just won a fucking 450 supercross. Bend at the hips first? How about the fact that the body can make movements in parallels and you can bend more than one joint at a time.

He definitely sounds like the way most cult leaders think. He has the only true answers, he's born naturally gifted in a way that mere mortals aren't, and no one can truly understand things but him.

His thoughts on rider technique may have good merit (for some riders, we're obviously not all the same!) but his dogmatic approach of him having the only true answers about life are pretty crazy shiznit....!

This type of approach can be quite successful in the coaching business if you want actually make a living.

I worked in the coaching game in car racing, and was paralyzed by my own analysis and 'doubt'. A lot of customers want hard simple answer answers, rather than long-winded discussions about brain mechanisms and the fact that we really know almost nothing about how drivers (or riders) do what they do. There were guys working with F1 drivers who I fundamentally thought weren't good and would say things that to me made no sense. However, what people say and how they make someone feel are two different things.

So, while some do tread that line between extreme self confidence and scientific doubt to actually be 100% authentic, it's extremely hard to do from a business perspective.

I know your expanding it to encompass his stuff he says about life in general, but yeah in this game these kind of characters get the business. Being any other way, it makes your life difficult.

It can be very effective in most settings, but effective is not always a positive thing.

Yes, there are plenty of people who will pay whatever price, even their own lives or lives of others if need be, to follow the orders of a cult leader who believes that they are the only ones who truly understand what is occurring, what has occurred, or what will occur. There are people who desperately need that sort of ‘coaching’ in their lives in order to make sense of their world.

Now I’m not saying that Hughes is the next Jim Jones or Charles Manson, but some of his rantings on this podcast are more similar to those types of personalities than most would like to think.

The ‘nobody else understands’ and ‘I was born with gifted powers’ type of stuff is almost textbook for how cult leaders see themselves. Thankfully most people who view themselves in that light are relatively harmless in the grand scheme of things, but it’s definitely a type of megalomania that bears watching. The line between harmless and ‘I always thought that he would snap’ can be pretty small.....

Marvin only won after he took his "B" off?

PS- here is some comprehension and timeline for you, Marvin has won races before.

So he has won six (6) 450SX races with a neck brace.....and one (1) without. Not to mention numerous outdoor wins, a 250sx title....also with numerous wins.

Wink

Oh man, putting atheletes on a pedestal is also a mistake i made, I think the main reason why we do this is either the father was never around or you don't respect your father and look for other male role models.

don't get me wrong, i'm not denying him the right to think and feel what he want's but that's not his truth.

Please show me where the science behind psychedelics and the effect on the brain is pretty clear. Considering they have been illegal to study in almost every way for the last 50 years (a "conspiracy" of its own), it seems to me that we likely have room to expand our knowledge. Maybe that is why there are ongoing, fast tracked studies at multiple renown universities. This comment is on the level of saying we understand outer space. We don't know shit about consciousness (unless you're the CIA).

Also, science exists to disprove itself. It used to be "true" that all fats were bad, cigarettes were safe, and...the list goes on and on. To say that there is one truth is disingenuous to the process and quite frankly, a reflection of our individual and collective ego.

Your last two sentences come off like you have all right answers. It reminds me of the George Carlin quote, "'Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?'". Is it possible you have consumed information that is incorrect? Is it possible others' have consumed information that you haven't? Your truth is your truth. It's not THE truth.

Like I said on the other post his "evidence" is merely correlative and not causitive. MM rode no bnetter getting his 2nd than he did winning. In both races he was the 3rd fastest guy in the main. And I think we can all agree that if it was not MM than Coop would have won that main. So two mains, essentially the same resutls (and for sure the same speed (i.e. 3rd fastest lap) but Ryno and his believers thinks that it was the neck brace.

Remember kids, correlation does not equal casuatiion. Here is a fun website to drive that point home. Just look at the graph. That proves lack of pirates is causing global warming, right? haha

He comes across as someone who is taking psychedelics and losing his grip with reality a bit, his riding talk is fine but its all his other weird ramblings that are the worrying thing.
I had a friend he went through a phase like this and ended up committing suicide..

Rider: Hey coach, where should I look?

Coach A

"Well, for starters humans aren't the most reliable for actually knowing where they look. So without a eye trackers we don't even know where you look. Secondarily, the actual data behind eye strategies is incredibly thin. We're talking about a hugely complex cognitive mechanism here that involves multiple brain systems. What happens at the moment is people just say " look further ahead ", which is fine, but what does that really mean? Do top riders have multiple strategies that changes and are dynamic. That'll be interesting to study. I once come up with this idea about Returnative Tangent Point Fixation which is kinda cool. You should check it out. I wrote about it. The scene is so open on this no one really knows. There's a lot of confirmation bias and that kinda thing. In fact your improvement today might not even by my input, correlation doesn't mean causation.

Coach B

As you approach the corner look at apex.as you enter corner focus on exit point.

Being scientifically literate about the complexity of riding and technique isn't necessarily going to win you a lot of custom.

That is called data points. Racing against the same people week after week his relative speed has not changed. He is still not going any faster relative to the other riders with or without the neck brace.

If he would have went out there and set fastest lap by half a second and won the race by 12 seconds then maybe Ryno would have a point about the neck brace effecting his speed. But relative to the other racers on track his seems no faster without the neck brace than he was without it. So I am not comparing his lap times from two different races but rather his lap time compared to the other racers in both races.

That is all I got Laughing

Carry on...

Well you don't compare fastest lap times, you compare average lap time or just overall race time (whichever you prefer). That's all that really matters. If you win when you haven't been winning for a long time then that absolutely is a relative improvement over other riders.
