Exactly. And we, collectively, understand that it's a big risk. Racers are conditioned to accept the fact that they will be expected to remove goggles (which is safety gear if you want to be blunt about it) to compete. Why not try something new that helps increase their safety when needed?

I'm no pro, and I hardly race anymore, but I have at least 4 pairs of goggles ready at any moment. So yeah, nobody is racing pro with just 1 pair of goggles. ^ This. I highly doubt he was shifting from 1st to 2nd when this happened, as I've never used 1st on a mx track ever. There is a "false" neutral between every gear, when the previous gear has disengaged and the new gear has not fully engaged. If the shift detent mechanism doesn't fully lock in the new gear, it can disengage and you can end up in that bad space between gears at a very inopportune time.

I always thought a false neutral was when a sloppy shift doesn't fully engage and gets you in between two gears other than 1st or 2nd. I think it happened more often on older bikes.

I remember one time after a race and we were all sitting around hitting the tequila pretty hard, and my bike ran backwards. Come to find out I was sitting backward on the seat.
