To me the principle isn't that pros should be paid for this race, its that the promoter runs it for profit, and participants who drive the profit for that promoter should be a promoter expense.  Pros making millions, or $10, shouldn't be expected to subsidize the promoter's bottom line.  Nor should teams.

I think FTE is right. The Promoter is the one who needs to pick up some of the cost because they're the one with the upward oriented palm in this one

Exactly....Gueseppe and his shakedown crew are getting rich, and teams have to have bake sales (a totally honorable thing, but shouldn't be necessary) and selling tee shirts to be able to go.  It's insane....

I'm not going to pretend to be knowledgeable about the details of purse, bonus, or costs of participating in the MXoN.

But as far as risk v. reward, remember JA21 being landed on after rolling the finish line jump? That could have been tragic. It's a miracle he avoided being hurt much worse. It's got to be in the back of everybody's mind. Sponsors, Riders and Factory teams, alike when assessing whether it's worth it or not.

I didn't read past the first page of this thread because it's the same thing as last year and the year before.

The simple fact is if the AMA, the teams or riders really wanted to represent then there wouldn't be all this bitchin', moanin' and cryin'.

All they have to do is add one dollar to every MX and SX ticket sold for a fund that would completely cover our teams expenses.  I'm a fucking dumbass and I can figure it out.  Go or don't go but stop fucking using "cost" as an excuse.

Where is this debate going?  The payment arrangement for MXdN is pretty much identical to Supercross and Pro Motocross - riders aren’t getting paid by the promoter, they’re being paid by teams and sponsors.  If, as professional riders, they don’t feel the financial equation adds up they can opt not to race.  Same as when they are shopping around for an SX/MX ride - if the dollars don’t make sense for them they can find a different team or go and do something else.

All that aside, MXoN has never been about the money; it’s about the one opportunity each year to represent your country and test yourself against the best from around the world.  It’s not just another race on the calendar.

Riders who really want to go will make it happen; riders who just want to make a buck out of it can sit and watch while the others go out and get it done.

"Do you spend your own money to work for free?"

Yes they do. Do you know how many schoolteachers dip into their own pockets to buy school supplies for families who can't afford to every year? My own brother has done this. This is such a tired, disproven argument.

Every one of us on this forum would have given our left nut to be able to race a dirt bike professionally.

To make your analogy more accurate...Your brother would be buying school supplies for kids whose parents drive $80,000 cars and live in 3000 square foot houses. Why...

To make your analogy more accurate...

Your brother would be buying school supplies for kids whose parents drive $80,000 cars and live in 3000 square foot houses.

Why should your brother(the riders) do that when the parents(promoter) make lots of money?

Haiden is already rich. He was born that way. How much are YOU willing to pay him to represent for our country for one race?

NOTHING.

MXdN is entertainment.

It is not patriotic to ride for free and run the risk of having a Japanese rider land on you.

I mean.. F1, drivers get a fee for every point they accumulate and goes towards their F1 licence the following year.

Verstappen paid €1,018,724 just for his F1 super license which only last 1 season.

The more dominant you are, the more your fee will be the next year to race..

That's the point, it's not just another race on the calendar.  You can't compare it to the series arrangements as it's not a part of either series.  The teams exist to represent in the US or GP series and it is those titles for which they are investing a lot of dollars, not the MXdN.

If a team wants to commit its rider to go to promote the team and the brand it can provide for that compensation in the rider's contract contingent on the rider being selected (fat chance getting that from Kawi).  Or the rider can demand it be a race he will be supported to participate if chosen, or insist on support coming from an outside sponsor like RedBull or Monster.

The MXdN is fundamentally different, not least because it gets pimped as some pure celebration of the glory of the sport - which it should be.  In which case Insport can celebrate like everyone else by not doing it for the money.  As structured now Insport pads its profits by shifting significant expenses and risk, including to other parties who have some pretty hefty costs and unavoidable downside risks that are hard to balance against pride and glory.   I think this one event should be structured differently from that.

This to me is less about Deegan asking to be cashed in than it is a case of what do you expect to happen if Insport wants to cash in on him or other top pros and the resources those teams bring to the event.

This squabbling every year is pathetic. The US supposedly has the biggest moto industry in the world, yet it seems nobody is willing to facilitate getting to the biggest internationa  race.

Meanwhile small countries attend every year without any chance of ever winning. How do they do it? Fund raising that starts nearly 12 months in advance. It's not like the event is sprung on anyone without notice.

In the absence of any other willing parties, the AMA should be stepping up.

Makes you wonder what everyone’s $50 a year membership goes towards. It certain isn’t rider advocacy or trying to keep riding areas open.

I have been a fan of the MXDN since the 70's...but I also feel that we are asking the riders to take a huge risk that they basically have to pay out of pocket to attend but receive little to nothing for the risks that they take. How much do athletes at the olympics get paid.? There's no doubt it's expensive to send a team to the MXDN but there was never an issue with cost or rider enthusiasm when that long unbeaten streak was going on, and team USA were coming over once a year and kicking butt at a canter.. The euro riders had about 2 decades of getting soundly beaten but you never heard any of them complaining about the cost or saying "yeah well, it's not that important anyway..." 🙄

This does not include anything the may receive from sponsors and donors...It's time for the MXDN promoters to step up to the plate and pay these riders...they are not amateurs and when almost every amateur sport pays more than the MXDN, a professional race, it becomes abundantly clear that the promoters are nothing but greedy...Infront should be paying but they won't ( this has zero to do with Deegan and is long overdue). And for the asshole promoter that takes 100% of the profits and gives nothing back to the sport tells you exactly where their interests lie, they are just using these riders and this race for a huge payday for themselves....

You raised a ready good point.

US Olympians get paid by the US Olympic committee for gold, silver and bronze medals, that would be the same as the AMA paying US riders.

Yep Don miss interpreted the Olympic payments.
The International Olympic Committee doesn’t pay athletes, however each athlete’s own home country may pay them, as the American Olympic Committee does.

So if the same system was incorporated into MXdN, it wouldn’t be the promoter paying riders, it would be each country’s sanctioning body, such as the AMA for the US, and then only if they finished on the podium.

I'm surprised the top guys don't have a des Nations bonus in their contracts.. I know I would!

I'd also race it for free though haha.. It was my dream as a youngin

Edit: To clarify I meant if they get selected they get x amount in bonus' there's a lot more exposure at that race than runnin practice laps at a private facility somewhere..

Say what you will about this race but the 2 x defending champs won’t have their top riders there. The country has only won this event twice. They said they would be healthy scratches. No one misses Round 1 of SX, MX or MXGP as healthy title threats.

If they were paid, I have a feeling this would be the off season race they attended. It certainly is not a charity race for Infront.

Remember though, at one of the last SMX rounds after Hunter crashed in practice he chose not to race so he'd be fit for des Nations, even though he was a pretty sure thing to win it all.. So he essentially took a $500 thousand pay cut to race it..

That said, it does make me feel a certain kind of way that Infront just rake in all the money for an event like that but maybe it's better to just not think about it haha

Why is this 7 pages about deagan making fluff about only going if he gets paid.

So for the other 3 x he didn’t go due to not being paid ?……no lame fucking excuses held him back from learning.

Now he’s supposed to be in the best form to beat the Europeans …..

So now he will only go if he gets paid ? He will,go and get paid to learn

What am I wrong about?

The purse from a Pro Motocross or Supercross race doesn’t come close to covering expenses for a top race team.  Pro riders don’t race for purse money, they race for what their teams and sponsors pay them.

Talk about tone deaf…

The wealthiest motocross nation on earth with the best paid riders is arguing about whether their riders should go to MXoN unless they get paid, and their riders having to fork out money for the own entourage.  Yet every year dozens of nations scrape together the dollars to send three riders who probably have to rent a bike, and if they’re lucky they might bring their own suspension in checked luggage.

Get a grip on reality.  If you don’t like it stay at home.  The rest of us will be there competing anyway.

"MXDN payment arrangement is pretty much identical to Supercross and Pro Motocross" that statement is 100% wrong we're talking about rider pay not a manufacturers investment in a team....MXDN pays nothing.....MXGP pays nothing....SX/MX/SMX has purse money of over $10M that goes directly to the riders on top of what they are paid by the manufacturers.

You’re right, I didn’t get your point.  Best I can make out some people are annoyed that a European promoter is making money from event and American riders aren’t getting a cut.

Padding the promoter's pocket as a result.  That's an expense the promoter should absorb if the event is run for profit.  That it's run for profit with that sort of cost shifting consequence is the dynamic that drives these questions.

Not denying that if the event was run pure some rider somewhere, probably from the states, would say pay me, in which case I'd say piss off.

As I said, riders can choose not to participate.

Adventures in missing the point.

Some people can't comprehend that this would benefit all riders and teams, they are against it because they can't get one rider out of their mind.... they prefer to have a crooked promoter take advantage of the worlds best riders by hiding behind patriotism....while laughing all the way to the bank...
