Getting personal here.

Doc prescribed me Wellbutrin to help with anxiety.

I’ve always refused SSRI’s from bad a previous experience, but Wellbutrin is a different classification supposedly.

My main concern is: Will it affect me on the bike in a negative way?
I don’t want to lose motivation to ride, to get better, or take away my competitive nature. I feel like anxiety helps me with riding in a weird way, but not in everyday life. It’s crippling.

I’ve heard of this happening with other medications, so I don’t want to risk losing interest in my favorite hobby.

Anyone have experience with this medication and if it had any effects on the bike?

Secondary concern is stopping and returning 100% back to baseline. I don’t want any lingering effects at all, if I choose to stop taking it. Anyone have lingering effects after stopping, or did you just go back to baseline? After stopping certain medications that don’t work for you, I’ve heard it can take years to get back to baseline again.

Feel free to send a direct message as well.

Thanks

I take it for ADHD and anxiety. It has helped me a ton when riding. I don’t get the random thought in my head that takes away from my focus when riding. I use to not eat before riding because my anxiety would be so out of wack that my appetite would just disappear, I haven’t had that problem since I started taking it.

I tried it and I don't think it worked for me. The simplest way to put it is it made me too mellow. I do construction work and I need to be a little amped up to get stuff done. Id try it and see if it works, it's not habit forming so it can't hurt to try.

Anxiety is great AND it sucks.

I hit you with a DM but just know it can get better.  It may take some time to find a medication that works for you to “take the edge off” but I highly recommend breathing techniques, acceptance and understanding what your body is doing also helps immensely.  I also know that everyone that suffers from anxiety or panic attacks may read my post and think I could never say anxiety is great, but once I accepted it and understood it and didn’t fear it…..  everything got better.

A very close friend of mine was prescribed it and said it did absolutely nothing for him. They upped his dosage and he still felt no change whatsoever so he stopped taking it. I think different people respond to things like that in different ways though, so you may have a completely different experience.

Pay close attention to weight gain. It’s a side effect of those medications.

I was prescribed it for ADHD....i just wanted some regular speed and they gave me that crap.  It works but it's very mild in how it helps.

I took Wellbutrin and Lexapro for anxiety & depression. While I felt much better I hated being on it. I wanted to get back on my ADHD medication that I took all through school to help with work and suddenly my Dr had me on that stuff. I didn’t think of myself as anxious or depressed but I thought she was the expert knew what I needed. So I took it. I about 8 month I went from 170 to 196 lbs without changing my diet or exercise anything. Straight from the medication. I eventually got off of it because of that. I had a terrible time adjusting to starting it and coming off of it. I’ve never been so tired in all my life and was half motion sick while adjusting. I’ll never go back.  Switched up Dr’s and told them about the last go round& now and I’m back on my ADHD medication and feeling much better & happier. Been on it for about a month and starting to shed some weight. Feel like I’m getting back to myself

Were you able to return 100% back to baseline after stopping, or did you notice any lingering effects?

As others have said above, it can take time to figure things out as there is no pill that works the same for everyone.  Meanwhile you suffer until they figure out what works.  It's very frustrating and at times it can feel like your life is a science experiment.  But hang in there.  Hopefully Wellbutrin works for you and you won't have to keep trying different things.

I actually felt better once I stopped. I didn't notice any negative side effects once I stopped. Sure I'm a little bit more grumpy, but I think it's normal for me. I took it for anxiety and it did help, but like I said I need to be a little anxious if I want to get something done.

Anxiety is a synonym of fear in Merriam Websters English Dictionary, by definition.  What is it you're all so afraid of these days?

Set the downcote record, I don't care.  Have another benzo while you're at it.

I take Zoloft and then I added Wellbutrin to help with drowsiness. For me it's great, and everything is better on the motorcycle and mountain bike and in every other aspect of life. Just eliminates all distracting thoughts or demons and helps me be present and not in my head.

Coming off the drugs can really suck. It's different for everyone. Most people I know had no problems coming off, but I had a miserable time and went back on. My understanding is that if you come off the drugs within like three years you'll likely be okay, and it's only after several years of use that your body gets used to it at a degree that's difficult to break away from. If you do come off just make sure you wean really slowly, over a long period of time.

If you, or a loved one, has gone through it I doubt you would be so callous.  But maybe you do know someone and it's always bothered you because you think they didn't need it.   Obviously you are entitled to your own opinion.  Although not sure what you accomplish by belittling others who are suffering through, no fault of their own.  It's nice you don't have to worry about it.  Be thankful.

Someone that doesn’t have anxiety would never understand the struggle. I’d never wish it upon anyone, either.

It’s really hard to describe or try to explain to someone that’s never experienced it, because it can be both mental and physical.

You are partially right, it can be a type of fear in a sense. But it’s not just “fear”. It can be overwhelming feelings of uncertainty, feeling out of place, worry, panic, anger, etc.

Not to mention some of the physical sides including shortness of breath, chest pains, the feeling of your throat closing..

This reminds me of times when people ask me what’s wrong, I say I just have some anxiety.. Then they ask what I’m “anxious” about. I just shake my head. Being anxious and having anxiety are much different, at least for me. People just don't understand.

I have tried all of them over the past 20 years… I am currently weening off venlafaxine and am going to be completely ssri free hopefully by next spring. In my personal experience none of them have been a miracle pill for me. The “best” they have worked was venlafaxine 75mg. I’m on 37.5 now… unfortunately I can’t stand how dependent you are on them, and the Horrible feelings you have even if you miss one morning of taking it.

I have got sick and tired of not feeling “great” and chasing it with pills. All the pills have done is help me loose touch with reality and have very little emotional feelings period. Like permanent boredom, but hey, not depressed or having anxiety either …

The only cure I have found is setting and working towards attainable goals within our own control. IE, loosing weight, getting stronger, being a better parent, empoyee, etc. when I have something I’m striving for that’s hard, I stay focused and don’t let small bullshit bother me or get me worked up….

Fuck the guy quoting a dictionary, your a sorry excuse for a man and I feel bad for your family if they ever have to count on someone like you, simp.

Good luck OP, may you find peace and happiness bro. It’s nothing to be weirded out to talk about. Take care of yourself. The people that actually matter in your life won’t judge you at all

What Regis mentioned about breath work is taught in any therapy work related to anxiety...because it really does help.  Highly suggest looking for some youtube vids on breath work and follow it.

Another thought also relates to what Regis said about getting a better understanding of how anxiety works, great suggestion and a popular easy to read book on that is called "Dare".  Book is very helpful in not only explaining how anxiety works but how to manage it.  Basically, the viewpoint in the book is to kinda buddy up with your anxiety like it's an old pal that hangs out and pops in occasionally and when it does , rather than fear it and make matters worse, internally joke about it to lighten things up and eventually you become less "scared" of the situation.  It really is a great book as it's an easy read with great examples of how to better handle things.

I have OCD and pretty extreme panic attacks.  Would be amazing to talk myself out of it like you suggest….glad you have never experienced it (or acknowledged it) but lots of us don’t get to pick it and it destroys lives.

Breathing techniques helps a lot,a few other tricks ,  being around a rare extremely calm person .  Like an old Native American women at the education bldg who faxed docs to an attorney in Chicago for unpaid wages today.  Dr calls this morning 5 of 7 ribs still separated bad.  Rushing to get 400 pages of docs & pick important details for a 4pm phone apt with a Chicago attorney. Pt at 5 .  In a a lot of pain today & rushed.  I called attorneys for weeks, stress.  71-76 my dad was in & out of nut houses , extremely violent , he would be shaking like he was being electrocuted.  It was scary to be around him & I had to b his shadow on the farm.  I got a bad case of shingles when I was 9 from stress.   I just worked to build myself up where I didn’t feel pain , block his crazy ass out & could leave my body not to feel it.  I did this repeatedly on 6-27 in icu .  Ovr the yrs I benefited big time , others couldn’t handle the stress . Like 4.7 bil for 5 projects hhg rig in 94 . Our Vietnam Vet job coordinator couldn’t handle the stress of dealing with the mob every week.  I had no problem the mob they called me LA , laughing Anthony .  You can build yourself up to handle anything.  Once you figure out your life & happiness is the most important thing.

This is an I interesting one that I'd love to discuss with you. A little drunk currently but I have had experiences with this that are possible what you're going through.

I just got off it after a few years. 1 it made my blood pressure noticably higher. 2. It made me feel like I had no emotions generally or just feel very “blah” all the time aside from daily anxiety  3. Per my doc Wellbutrin actually makes my anxiety worse.

One thing I’ve taken for anxiety that I found actually helped was a beta blocker. You just take them as needed (when you feel anxious) vs all of the time. I have massive stage freight to where I feel like I’m blacking out if I have to give presentations but if I take a beta blocker before hand I stop giving a shit and my presentations go great

Won't comment much on the medications, they work wonders for some and do nothing or make things worse for many others. There's genetic testing that can be done that can help determine what meds are most likely to work but those often aren't done unless you've been through a few meds.

I tell anyone who is at the point of considering meds for these type of symptoms to also seek therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy in particular can work wonders for anxiety. Best analogy is diet and exercise for your physical health is similar to medication and therapy for your mental health, much better results if you're optimizing both.

Hey-zoos works best. Full commit, no turning back. All good.

Other things can help, but addiction, side-effects, and/or patient for life are the negs.

I deal with this all the time.  It is like I can't shut my brain off.  Lie in bed trying to sleep and my mind just keeps going.  Everything ends up being negative.  My job is very stressful and my aging parents are a big draw on me now. I'm good when I'm with my wife, she is the calming one as mentioned above.  When I alone the demons come out.  I do take Zoloft.

First off, its great to know there are people in the moto community especially men that are honest about anxiety. As a man, it can make you feel weak and less of a man because all your life you're programmed to be the strong one or to "suck it up." With that being said I have been on Zoloft for about 4 years now to treat my IBS, OCD, and anxiety. Went 30yrs without meds and tried about every remedy. For me, SSRI's have been life changing and wish I would have started back when I was a teenager. Before taking meds I was constantly worried when going out to places or going to the moto track for fear of my IBS flaring up. When I was at the track I couldn't enjoy myself and wouldn't eat or hardly drink anything outside of water for fear of my IBS flaring up. Constant running thoughts, double, triple checking things around the house. The side effects at first when taking the SSRI's were brutal. I had nausea, night sweats, skin felt like it was on fire, increased panic attacks, increased anxiety, and upset stomach. After about 2 weeks I just noticed one day that my brain shut the hell up, I felt normal, and everything was great. Not like a fake sunshine and rainbows feeling, but I felt like ME. Since then I have had to up my dose from 50mg to 75mg and now going to jump to 100mg next week. Best to do increases in small amounts to lessen the side effects. There is a concern with weight gain and SSRI's, but if you already watch what you eat you will be fine. I gained weight, but I suspect it was because I was no longer afraid to eat things for fear of my IBS flaring up. I will say that the meds don't totally numb you from everyday life. I still get nervous about things or tiny bits of anxiety here and there, but my body doesn't go into full panic mode. Some people go off the meds and some people stay on them forever. There is no data that shows any long term negatives for taking SSRI's if that's the route you go. My doctor also gave me "helpers" which is Hydroxyzine pills if I have a REALLY bad day. Basically, an antihistamine that also acts as a sedative. Heavy on the sedative, those things will knock you out. Talk with your doctor and make sure you keep them informed on what is working and what isn't. My family had a history of Zoloft working so my doctor prescribed that for me. Stick with the meds and after about a month things will seem normal again. DO NOT QUIT YOUR MEDS COLD TURKEY! Also for some meds Alcohol and Caffeine are no-nos as they can reverse the effects of the meds, especially grapefruit will create a bad time. Good luck with your journey dude and don't feel ashamed about it! Gets better from here on out.
