Can Anything Replace the Joy of Moto?

So it’s definitley not as good as moto, and it’s definitely expensive, but man you live in Canada I can’t believe you aren’t skiing.

East coast you are close to Tremblant, Jay Peak, La Massif de Charlevoix, Mont-Sainte-Anne.

If moto is a 10, skiing is an 8 for me. It gets me through the winter and when it’s warm enough to ride im over skiing and ready to ride.

However, theres nothing like trying to go fast through glades (trees), throwing powder, getting a hell of a leg workout, and sending some drops/jumps. Hell of an adrenaline rush too.

Snowboarding is cool too I just think it’s harder to snowboard as you get up in age.

If I didn’t ski, winter would suck!

Yeah, Sonny used to love blasting through the glades too, then one day he just stopped.

Still do Moto, but Snowbiking is amazing.  Especially if you live in Canada......it will give you access to that dirt cycle all year round!!!!

Most of the time when I get inside an engine that has been on a snowbike they look much better than a bike with the same hours on dirt.  Moisture is the enemy and the don't get dirt in them.

I just did a top end on a bike that had 250 hours.....all snowbike.  Looked brand new.  Clean oil and clean air are your friends.

Ok sweet man! Dunno what is false there though. hours are hours. having done both, I wouldn't do the timber sled thing again. and I wasn't necessarily talking about the motor as far as what its hard on. More so clutch, cold weather, salt and snow, chains, linkage. The motors are fine. Oh And I just bought a great shape 22' RMK pro for $2000 if we are talking used. So that is still cheaper right?

not to mention the capabilities when it comes to mountain sledding. I wouldn't be able to go with my buddies with a ditch banger timber sled.

Mtb. But gravity, down hill. The DH IMG 4179 3racing scene is lots of fun, way more fun than sitting next to your truck between motos.

I've found nothing that matches Motocross, but mountain biking is really, really cool too.

It's especially fun to ride with friends.  It's like BMX for adults.  I've even gotten to the point where I enjoy climbs.

My favorite time to ride is at night.  It takes a little getting used to riding with lights, but it's very, very therapeutic.  It's an adventure every single time.

Again, nothing matches Motocross, especially racing, but mountain biking is a lot less expensive, and safer, as the speeds are slower (unless you start hucking huge jumps or drop offs).  It's also more convenient, as you usually don't have to travel as far.

I tried to replace moto with mountain biking, but mtb racing was too pain-focused for me. I’ll accept the criticism that maybe I was doing it...

I tried to replace moto with mountain biking, but mtb racing was too pain-focused for me. I’ll accept the criticism that maybe I was doing it wrong, but it seemed like the racer who could endure the most pain (and inflict pain on their competition) would prevail, while moto was about who had the biggest balls and best technique.

Yeah, I raced mtb once.  It wasn't that fun. It was more of who's in the best shape, rather than skill.

If the track was a fast downhill, it would've been a different story.

Mountain biking is fun, but nothing replaces motocross.

It's that time of year here in Canada, haven't ridden a bike in 5 months and probably still a month to go. Talking with a friend tonight (both early 30's) and he was just so dang pumped on his rec soccer league. He loves sports and especially soccer, but I found myself really jealous of that. I quit racing MX 10 years ago due to injury risk for work and budget. I ride dual sport/single track but haven't scratched that competitive itch for a long time. Looking into road racing or track days for a start, but that's an expensive jump and the injury risk is still there. I can't believe I'm that jealous of someone playing soccer, when the only thing I've found that gives me that same excitement is riding. Kind of wish I spent more time playing hockey as a kid rather than riding, as I am completely without skill to try any stick/ball sports. Nor do I really want to....

What else have you guys found to replace the thrill of racing, or even riding? Returning to racing/competitive track riding just doesn't seem wise for me at this stage of life, but I've been going through withdrawal for 10 years and it doesn't seem to be getting better.

Unfortunately, no!

Unpopular opinion. I’ve got tons. Here’s another. Running of the marathon flavor. There’s nothing on planet earth like months of training and dedication coming together around mile 22. Or whatever distance you’re running. Mile 2.5, mile 11, Whatever.

Liking pickleball is one thing, but comparing it to moto (or any two-wheeled pursuit) is just crazy

A friend at work does IronMan type stuff, at a decent level.

Last year we worked out that in 4 days, he ran and cycled further than i had total in 60 years. Not counting school aged stuff.

He loves it, and the suffering.

He wants to try dirt bikes.

Replace...tough call. (Jaun is not too far off haha) But I recently got back into BMX and it has been a blast. The new bike parks they are building are pretty awesome. They have multiple lines so you can progress safely. I also bought an enduro MTB so looking forward to when the MTB lifts start running. But I do still plan on riding some moto. Just not as much or as serious as in the past.

Here is me riding last weekend at a local spot in Palmdale, Ca (called The U) at the ripe old age of 58 on my BMX bike (22" wheels).

I ride a 22” as well at 57 yo.

I've transitioned pretty hard into MTB. The hours riding to hours maintaining ratio is way higher than with Moto. I probably average about 30 hours of riding a month, maybe 4 or 5 days a week. And that's with just buying our first house and all the associated work😂 for me the feeling of riding is pretty similar, but I can put my gear on in my garage, and ride to a world class trail network in about 3 minutes (Queenstown NZ). Hard to beat that. To replicate Moto though, stay away from XC. Downhill or Enduro only!

Some of my friends do trail rides and hard enduro around this area, and that seems pretty good, just not for me financially right now.

I still have my ~40 hour '05 YZ250 in my dad's garage in Europe, maybe by the time I get it over here it will be "vintage" and I won't have to pay any import tax 🙃

Having said all that, I still regard myself as a moto guy that does MTB. Watch all the racing, browse the forums. I might sometimes watch the UCI DH highlights, same as F1, but there's nothing like moto.

The people that don't like emtb and downhill probably live in a flat area, nothing gets the adrenaline going like a steep decent on a cliff edge with fading brakes.

I still ride moto, no racing just ride tracks on practice days. But I live in Canada and usually can’t ride 6 months of the year. I got a snowmobile a few years ago and love it, scratches the moto itch for sure, even if it’s just a cheaper older sled. Plus it makes me look forward to shitty winter weather which most people dread.

I was starting to get a little burned out on moto as far as the round trip travel for a day of riding etc and with a kid on the way, I had to choose something safer for now.

I started doing Muay Thai and I’m loving it. If you’re a guy that is super into riding technique and trying to improve, it scratches the same itch. Super technical so you’re always trying to analyze your technique and see/feel improvements. Also a great way to stay fit and there is a lot of adrenaline during sparring sessions if you’re interested in doing that part. I still love riding when I get the chance to get out, but for me this has been a great alternative!

I do enjoy Karting, but thats a money pit , even the arrive and drive stuff is getting expensive, and TBH its so serious that half the fun is sucked out of it before you even move.

Back in the day i got to drive in a competition that ran the week after the F1 GP here in the UK, where all the F1 ,Sportscar ,WRC, and press  teams got to race for 4 hours, i have never seen anything like it, we were just there doing our best as Jaguar B  Team, while Ferrari and Mercedes guys almost came to blows in pit lane.

When we had them just for our team, we took 60 people to a huge indoor place in London, and our F3 driver qualified 7th LOL.

Nothing comes close to MX .

I've got a customer I've done a few racecars for, his lad raced (and won) one of the European Rotax championships last year, in his late teens, not sure how that translates to classes these days... All in they were paying £25k a round with a proven, winning team. Mental 🤯

So many good things out there... Moto is so unique, nothing will directly take its place, but that doesn't mean other stuff isn't a lot of fun or worth doing 🤘

Mountain biking is great, obviously.

BMX is a lot of fun and skatepark or street stuff or good trails (dirt jumps) are as techy or ballsy as you want to make it to tick your box.

I like the mechanical side of things and tinkering, and stuff that goes bang, so shooting is good fun for me.

Boxing, Thai boxing, BJJ etc are awesome technique wise and often have great competitive sides.

I resisted road motorcycles for decades... You have to treat it totally different, but some road bikes fucking rip for an adrenaline fix and the feeling of freedom is good for clearing your head. Track days on pavement are fun too.

On that note track days or racing in cars is sweet if you like improving yourself, improving lap times or just going racing as racing basically anything is fun. Drifting is a proper laugh, if you're in the US you should have a shit load of cheap RWD cars around to smash up while learning 😂

A lot of cool water stuff, surfing can be pretty crazy and pretty rewarding.

This is the “Altima 600” event he puts on twice a year. Only rules is that it has to be a Nissan Altima, and it must be stock. Mine’s a 2018, I wanted a 3.5 really bad, but I got this 4 banger from a Chinese restaurant for an absolute steal and we gutted everything except the center console, drivers seat, and dash. I took an old (expired) 5 point harness out of a friends old Street Stock and installed it in the car.

Other than safety, the 5 point keeps you up in the seat on the banking where a standard belt will wear you out just keeping yourself upright. Using a 5 point also allows me to use my Hans Device as well. Safety is lax, only a helmet, gloves, and long sleeves are required. I still use a Firesuit and all the stuff because the last thing I will do is burn alive in a race car.  I have a bad ass ex Clint Bowyer Sparco Firesuit from when he was at RCR in the 33 car.

Here’s a pic of my car. My dad always did his number in the diamond plate look on his racecars, and I did the pink outline and flame as a nod to my favorite driver who passed away a few years ago, Scott Bloomquist. This was before the last one back in January, it got pretty roughed up but still drove from 61st to 11th and blew my RF on the last lap.

My radio, air conditioning, and backup camera all still work too! I keep a phone charger in it, throw my phone in the center console, and then pull it out under red flag to text my dad in the stands or check live timing. IMG 9949 0

That's awesome! Do you still live close by? I live just about 10 minutes away over by the premier Sports campus. I was just out at Freedom Factory Thursday night running the drag strip.

Road racing is the only thing i have found that i enjoy more. Not any safer and it’s cheaper to be a heroin addict but it is an amazing feeling when it comes together.

But what i dont get , is people who quit MX because they dont want to get hurt , and then jump on Mountain Bikes and Road Race bikes.

Friend at work had 6 months in a cast after crashing a downhill bike, took them 5 hours to get medics to him, at least when i crash, the medics will hear me scream.

Norco spitfire,  dyno comp.  those were the days.
