Whats your flavor on newer 450s? What holds up?

I really like my steel Vortex set with a DID ert3 chain. Minimal adjustment after first ride and the gold looks great. 250 two stroke tho

SuperSprox Or Dirt tricks, RK GBMXU sealed thin oring chains….the setup cost more but last 2-3 times longer and after first initial chain stretch, minimal stretching and adjustments.

Another vote for the SuperSprox/RK x-ring combo. The sprockets (hybrid or all-steel) last forever and the chain seldom stretches after the initial break-in.

I change them often so I go with primary drive and had good luck.

Mika Metals. Excellent chains. Their hybrid rear lasts forever. Tell Simon I sent you.

I prefer Sun Stars that don't have mud cleaning grooves, to me cleaning groove sprockets never seem to last as long. As for chain I generally spend about a hundred bucks 110 bucks on a non o-ring chain and like a 125 on an o-ring chain did, or ek.

I like the Moose twinring sprocket for affordability and a protaper standard chain. Not the best or most expensive out there but I'm happy with it.

Dirt Tricks with an X-Ring. Last forever and safe.

The primary drive mx race chain definitely lasts as long as a regular renthal chain imo. It's only like 18 bucks less for the kit I figured out last time though. Maybe 25 30 hours I get out of one if I lube it every ride and keep an eye on the adjustment. Soon as it can touch the tire side knobs during deflection, I change it.

Because renthal rears are junk and last 10 hours for $90?

OEM Yamaha Sun Star steel rear, only ~$45, tusk x-ring chain, and JT sprockets front has been my go to the last several years. Fronts doesn't seem to matter on OEM, JT, pro-x, primary drive, supersprox, haven't gotten myself to spend the extra for a dirt trix.

450”s kill aluminum sprockets in 20hrs….especially if you ride sand/mud…I have a dirt tricks sprocket with 30hrs, absolutely No signs of tooth wear…..get what you pay for…and Made in the USA …… my 125 gets the Sunstar aluminum with lite weight chain….

I don't want to mess with it so, JT steel sprockets and EK O-Ring chain on everything.

A set of Dirt Tricks sprockets with a sealed chain (I use Firepower X-ring) is good for 100 hours or more.  They weigh less than twin ring sprockets, too.  No chain maintenance, either.  Just hit it with a little WD-40 after you wash the bike to prevent any rust.  I haven’t bought a can of chain lube in a decade.  My bike stays a lot cleaner, too.

Dirt Tricks and DID VX3 with staked master link. One initial stretch then don't have to mess with it for a few years.

I'm pretty sure that as of 2-3 years ago most Tusk/Primary Drive branded chains are being made by CZ.

The tusk chains from before that were subpar.

I don't get the Dirt Tricks Hype. I've used them my last two sprocket/chain cycles and for pure moto they just wear out chains. DID ERT3 lasts 30 hours even with lube every single moto, the rollers wear out before the chain actually stretches. Threw a new ERT3 chain onto the 30h old dirt tricks and that thing had major roller wear at 15 hours.

Maybe using a X ring is key to the setup, but i do not care to go that route pure moto wise. I stick to Renthal sprockets on a ERT3 chain and get 35-40 hours out of the set and then swap all of them together. Cost wise is about equal for 2 sets of renthal sprockets to 1 set of dirt tricks with 2 chains a piece. And peace of mind i dont have a roller failing either.

i easily get 25 hours out of a standard aluminum renthal with did ert3 chain and change them at that time.

Yeah but you probably keep your chain slack within spec and have a lubing ritual. It's easier to ignore that and blame the manufacturer.

I used to get aluminum because they were "faster" and proceeded to ride lots of sand on my 98 YZ250 back in 02-04. I would rotate them when they got hooked and then run them backwards until the teeth were about to break off 😅. Then I discovered steel rears and have no idea why anyone runs aluminum now, the stock sun stars on my yamaha's are crazy light for oem and last for at least 50 hours. I've got over 50 on my current 2019 and it looked good until a week at Moab, the last day was crazy muddy. It's still okay but I'll replace it when I put a new chain on in 10 hours or so.

On another note, does anyone who lives in Utah or rides Moab often notice more chain wear there than if you're riding other places? That mud was pretty destructive and even stained any bare aluminum on my bike. I ride in sand, mud, and lots of rocks here in KS, OK, MO, and AR, but that Moab mud was something else on the destructive side. Surprisingly ridable though, never clogged up my front or rear wheel.

The SunStar works Z sprocket is the best thing available. Completely indestructible.

Thanks to you guys on here I switched to Dirt Tricks and I love not having to think about the chain much. I couldn't get more than 10-15 hours out of a renthal + ERT3 setup - just a money dump.

The only thing that I don't like about the x-ring is that it throws off my balance a bit when going into a slow corner (not taking a good entry line, bad technique, etc.), but riding at speed nullifies it.

I’ve used the ERT3 for years but they are currently on back order, so I’ve started using the 520DZ2 chain back in November and it’s been great. Definitely a better price point as well and I might stick with that chain as it’s worked well the first two rounds of Sx.

DDC rear sprocket last a whole season for me

Stop blaming your chain for your lack of ability 🤣

Mika chain and sprockets. Love that the link is a press on and they seem to hold up great.
