There is a BIG exclusion list. Anything 10ply or greater is excluded. Some 8ply tires also can hit the 122 load index. Lots of light truck tires also are speed rated Q (99mph) so those are excluded from the regs too depending on what the definition of "large off road tire" actually is. That's why I'm a firm believer in the shitbox lifestyle. Every 6 or 7 years pick up some unwanted econobox wreck from Copart. Fix it up cheap, salvage title, run it the rest of the way into the ground. The F150 only comes out when it's necessary.

John Side note, saw him in concert last year at an outdoor park venue opening for Wang Chung and Rick Springfield with my wife. Surprisingly fun show all around.
