I bought a 73 CZ 250 and plan on doing some AHRMA Racing this coming year. I want to get that 2 stroke castor smell from back then. I was told try Klotz Benoil. I tried it and it doesn't smell at all. I tried the new Maxima 927 and it smells a little but not like that sweet smell from back in late 60s and early 70s. Any idea what to they ran back then? Maybe nobody makes it anymore.
There was a Castrol from that era that has been obsolete for many years but right now the name of it escapes me. Castrol R maybe? Every now and then you will find a can of it. It smelled bitchinn.
Each blend in the Klotz line all smell different to me but maybe I'm just stupid.
Blendzall was BA back in the day and I know it is still available but I have not had any experience with it
I hope this helps
Blendzall if you don't like Klotz Benol.
Blendzall
Ray Hook and Blendzall, Nor Cal legend!
Castrol R30 was a castor bean oil back in the day along with Blendzall. You can still buy Castrol A747 which is their newer castor blend. The Blendzall is still pretty much the same as it was back in the day. I'm surprised you didn't like the smell of the Maxima 927. It's a great modern castor.

Dumonde racing castor is one you could try but I had issues mixing it with pump gas… same with Benol and Blendzall. Maxima 927 is the only brand that mixed and stayed mixed.
No I like Max 927 it smelled good just not as strong as I remember oils being back in the early 70s. Thanks for the input guys. I'm old and want to relive my childhood I guess.
Like our taste buds, you may not smell as well as you used to. I thought the 927 was very close to that awesome smell of our youth (I'm old too).
the smell is stronger when you are following other people running it. I really liked the smell of Klotz back in our early 1970s Yamahas with oil injection. Blendzall not so much.
Torco smelled like a car needing a motor rebuild.
Golden Spectro 32:1.
Golden Spectro isn't castor based, it won't have that sweet smell of the 70's. I ran it for one rebuild in the late 70's and thought it left behind a lot of carbon.
Yeah, I ran it also and it does not smell. The only one I have rn so far that has any smell is Maxima 927.
I'll never put 927 in my bike again. It lubricated fine. My issue is how dirty it burns. I'm 8 hours there was a ton of carbon on my piston and exhaust. The smell isn't worth it to me. I'll run a modern clean oil like Amzoil
Don’t remember a castor smell to it but it had to be the most popular oil in New England. Maybe due to being based in Connecticut? One bottle to 5 gallons of gas. Shake the gas cam and pour it in. Simple.
Klotz template or whatever it’s called , smells Great. And it’s cheaper
Techniplate
Got a jug had for years still gets used in an old and abused jr50. I start it up every now and again ride it around neighborhood just to smell that smell lol.
Mix a bit of av to pump gas and blenzol. Smells like 1970.
I hadn't heard anybody before say 927 carboned up. I had that problem in the 70s running Golden Spectro. When Bel Rey MC1 came out that was the game changer for clean engine and smooth running. No smell though.
Pit Row
Interesting, I've used Golden Spectro since the early 80s and never had any significant deposits with pump gas in both eastern PA and here in Colorado. The usual oily coating on the piston and cylinder that didn't flash off during combustion was all I have had for enduros and trail riding. I also rotate in Klotz R-50 and Amsoil Interceptor on my modern bikes when I can't get Spectro locally and both of those oils seem to work well (less spooge with Interceptor due to lower flash point). My brother had some carbon on his 1976 and 1980 KX 125 pistons with Klotz Super Techniplate back in the day and I had carbon with Belray SI-7 and MC1 on my Can Am 175 and 250 back then. Switched to Spectro for my 1983 KDX 200 and have used it when I could until this day! On a side note, I only ride trails these days so I don't hesitate to mix 2T oils in my 2018 GG 300. I've never had an issue until one time I forgot oil and had to use a little generic 2T oil that I got from Walmart (only place open on that Sunday ride). Mixed at 40:1, that stuff oil fouled my plugs a couple times that ride. Finally figured it out when a riding partner did the same thing a year later and he oil fouled on his bike using that Wally oil!
People used to talk about running "bean oil" back in the day. What was that stuff?
Castor based oil from the Castor beans. Which by the way is a superior lubricant.
Here is an article on Harry Klemm's website of 1980's Klemm Research fame (If you rode a KX in the early to mid 80's you would know the name). Talks about Castor Oil.
About Two Stroke Oils and Premix
I'm shocked that I'm the only one here saying that. It was horrible. The inside of my 83 KX125was gross in 8 hours. Wear was nothing. Just carbon on the piston and exhaust port. And inside the motor looked like I was burning coal.
I switched to Amzoil and the problem was fixed. I didn't need the smell that bad
I wonder what in the oil caused the plugs to foul? A good friend runs Walmart oil in his 2 strokes. He has a good history with it and an exception rider.
There could be a few reasons. From what I understand, the Walmart oil has a high smoke point. We also were running the same model 300cc enduros with Keihin carbs riding at from 7000-11000 feet in altitude. We also run pump gas (yes, with ethanol) so we can gas up on long rides at gas stations (nice to have plated 2T 300s). We ride varying altitudes and temperatures and the combination of everything leads to periodic rich conditions. We also run our mix at 40:1 so maybe that's a bit too much for the Wally oil. BTW: was it you who picked up a bike out here in CO from Dave and George recently?
Thanks for that article. Very informative. I guess I'll go back to 927. At least according to the article it has good lubricating properties but not too dirty for a castor based oil. And it at least smells a little bit.
