Now that we know the production bikes stopped having a cable clutch back in '97/'98, has a factory rider had one on their bike since then, or is Eli the first?

If I remember correctly, Joel Smets used a cable clutch on his KTM 450.
He prefered it for the better feel during the start.

Nice, going for real horsepower, not just some numbers on a page.

No more repeats of the Monster Cup mishap.

So if he doesn’t win a title in 2026, will the team force him back to hydro? 😆

Not factory,  but i reckon Reedy was wishing he had one about 10mins earlier:

No, unfortunately this one didn't break into pieces like the mechanical one so I had to return it. Remember, I am also cheap😂

Maybe it's a hydraulic cable.

The best part is that there are certain taking heads who were asked by fans if Eli's KTM would be converted to cable and the fans were talked to like they were idiots. Eli wanted cable, Eli got cable.

Roger was interviewed by Swap. Said it was no big deal to make a cable setup. He can use either at anytime he chooses. He could get way more attention with the suspension and chassis than Kawi or Yam gave him. Sure looks happy with the team so far.

I have the hydro on my YZ450, I have wanted to go back to the cable because I do feel like there is an odd feel while feeding the lever for starts and mid corner. I have rode KTM's for a few years prior and thought nothing of it, typical vet dude just enjoyed that lighter pull. That is what made me want to use the hydro on the Yamaha. It would be cool to see what the difference feels like on the KTM

Mixed thoughts about this.

Obviously not technically difficult to do but KTM led the way with putting hydro clutches on production bikes; it’s kind of been one of the iconic features on their modern bikes.  Big call to put something bespoke on that probably will never be seen on any other KTM on the planet.

On the other hand I think is Tomac that picky and sensitive about it to insist upon a cable clutch when all of KTM’s titles in the last 25 years or so globally have been achieved with a hydro clutch.  But to mention that most other manufacturers these days have followed suit.

Followed because people wanted it, not that it was needed. Personally the only time I've wanted a hydraulic clutch is in hard enduro rock climbs. Adjusting the cable while riding through a rock garden sucks. Everywhere else I've had zero issues with a cable.

Nothing beats the feel of a cable. There is much more feedback and “feel”, especially with slipping/feeding power.

I’d say with a cable you feel the clutch, but with a hydraulic you feel the engine. If that makes sense.

I’d prefer to have a cable on my beta 300, but the self adjusting nature of a hydraulic is pretty much essential for anything technical. I believe even Cody Webb preferred the feel of a cable doing enduro on his yz250x, but the problem was constant adjustments?
