Beaumer’s injury was serious enough that the surgery happened immediately so everything is now back lined up in place for a quick recovery.

I suffered a burst fracture of L2. It's a very serious injury. Every step is a blessing for me. Hopefully he makes a complete recovery.

look up the injury and prognosis on sites like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic. Any time they add rods and screws does not indicate a quick recovery, nor complete recovery back to previous spine health status. The metal does not get removed later. 2 other vertebrae were fractured as well. He's lucky it did not pinch spinal cord or peripheral nerves into legs. Not saying for sure he'll never race again, but it would be at more risk than before and maybe he wouldn't choose that risk. My wife has had 3 spinal fusions with "instrumentation" in her lumbar and flexibility is limited. It's very common for the next disc and vertebrae above or below the fused area to wear out due to taking on the extra punishment of our natural motion in everyday life- especially for active outdoors sports. Wife rides horses and has had that extra wear occur leading to more surgeries.

I hope he moves on from moto. Super serious injury. Just not worth risking paralysis. My ortho doc rolled his eyes when I showed him the update.

My favorite freestyle/freeride skier had this injury. He made a miraculous comeback, but the risk in SX is far greater imo. Here’s a clip of his crash and recovery /comeback   Some is in French sorry.  Hopefully the time stamp worked

Been there done that on July 1st just 2 months ago and still doing PT but his is way more extensive than mine and I hope he is doing well.

You are %100 correct.  I am related to humans with these repairs.  Everything you stated is true.

Man, what a hit and awful injury list. Them Lumbars are going to make it difficult later on with the pinch points in the rods. Super happy he isn’t paralyzed etc.

I am actually not of the belief he rushed back on a concussion injury. Generally speaking, if you can go full out with your heart rate and not have issues while maintaining focus you are ok as long as the brain bruising is healed. Obviously a lot of money on the line for these guys so the urge to come back may have been there. Hate to see it either way and I hope he heals up without further complications.

With ktm next year they were looking at only running JuJu weren’t they? This may put a bind on that plan.

Having two concussions in such a short amount of time is really bad. I highly doubt his brain is healed from his last concussion just 2 weeks ago.

I have 2 discs in my lower back that are basically gone.  The surgeon I talked to about it told me to try yoga and other core training exercises to put the surgery off as long as I can, because like you said, as soon as the fuse your spine, the discs above and below the fusion wear much more quickly and will go bad next.  That conversation with the doctor was 12 years ago, and I’ve been able to maintain ever since.  That was some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten.

Racing after a serious concussion puts the racer and other racers around him at risk.  Racing SMX requires an elite level of reaction and coordination that could have easily been degraded by the multiple concussions Julien suffered this summer.  But hey, his chiropractor said he was recovered.

I don’t know.  He’s the one I heard say it publicly.

I hear ya. I was my wife's "rehab coach" for her last 2 surgeries. Forcing her to do her PT exercises, driving her to and from the gym to walk together to get her steps in, taxi service for Dr appointment follow ups, etc. She does the same for me when needed - we're both paying for playing hard when younger, but at least the medicine keeps advancing all the time. Today marks exactly 2 months (July 8) since I had TKA on my Left knee and have cleared 2 follow ups and 6 PT appointments and continuing daily at home. I'm probably 75% but not rushing anything. Had my Right 1 done in 2016 and familiar with the protocol. Have also had brain tumor pulled out of my head, completely rebuilt Right shoulder after VMX crash and more. Was told I needed fusion of C 4,5,6 back in 2006 and rehabbed my way around that with near daily maintenance at home.  I have burst discs between L2-3, 3-4 and misaligned vertebrae along with spinal stenosis that will need to be addressed at some point in the future, but for now I can manage it. I can fortunately still play ride in the woods and fire roads, desert, etc., around me but play it real safe. I have1 big get off from here and I'm probably done, then back to my street bikes 100% to feed the need.

Best of luck to you in your recovery! 👍

Has he said how many levels he had fused? If he had 3 vertebrae fractured the fusion probably goes a level above and below the fractures and entire lumbar spine might be fused.

same. holding off as long as I can too: lots of stretching, treadmill daily, work out regularly, E Stim machine, Shiatsu back massager, Icy Hot, etc. and non-prescription pain relievers as needed. Been looking into artificial discs that are finally FDA approved and hoping I'll be a candidate for that when the time comes.

Damn, this kid needs a bit of good luck to swing his way. Not sure why, but JuJu reminds me of a young Marty Smith. I suppose he may miss all of Supercross, but just want to see him be healthy, and work his way up to his potential. Best of luck JuJu !

Its amazing how often people confuse bad luck with bad judgment or bad decisions.

just noticed it looks like they gave you a replacement disc in there. Is that bone in there they want to fuse to vertebrae above and below or some kind of artificial disc replacement?

Agree, I burst my L1 and it was close to a year before I was really back to normal function. Fused 2 above and below. He is much younger but you are never the same with the lower back hurt.

Question for folks with their back fused. Are you able to reach your toes when doing stretches? I'm curious as how much restricted is your movement.

I'm not saying his crash happened because of the concussion, but 2 weeks seems like a hell of a short time period to be back on the gate.

20180606 205112Yes. Actually there's little change in terms of that or even my golf swing. It actually got better. And I hit the dirt at least ten times this last week doing a brutal (for me) Hard Enduro ride in Kauai. None the worse for wear. Can't believe the stuff those guys ride through. The main lingering issue is my confused sacral nerve bundle that is a little scrambled. Numbness down the outside of my leg all the way to my little toe, etc. I've grown fairly accustomed to all of that.

I can get close, 2 inches, The big things with lower fusions is hip flexibility so I do serious stretching  on my hips. Rotation is a little limited also. But i am older so he could maybe pull it off. If i was only 1 above and below I would likely not notice. 2 above and below is the difference

My New Back

Yep. 12 hour surgery. I now have Suzuki Full Floater dog bones on either side. The cage inside basically replaced the busted up vertebra. They pack the cage with "BMD" which is essentially bone graft material. "The intervertebral fusion cage is a large, hollow cylinder made of some type of metal, usually titanium. It is designed as a "cage" so that bone graft can be placed inside the hollow cylinder to allow a spinal fusion to occur between two vertebrae. The holes that are throughout the cage allow bone to form around and through the cage connecting the two vertebrae with solid bone." The surgery is commonly called a '360'
