Were the 90's the peak for anyone else?

Looking back from the 70's until present day I must say I think I enjoyed the 90's moto era the most as the bikes were great, simple, easy to maintain, and cheap.  It seemed like everyone had bikes/trucks and there were tons of tracks/trails to ride in SoCal.  We could ride our two strokes on the paved streets of Palmdale and Lancaster to our different tracks/trails and never worry about cops.  The moto scene was still on a "good times" trajectory before RC came in and changed the game.   I enjoyed the early 2000's and of course I still love moto now, but I guess the transition to 4-strokes just complicated things, along with all the electronics.  Just found this old photo from Glen Helen in the late 90's.  Ha, look at the helmets, gear, and number plates.  I often had a worn tire from ripping down asphalt streets, just too lazy to swap rubber often back then.  Who else has some old pics from the 90's?

The 90s looked awesome. No social media, no BS. Riding in a cotton jersey must have been gnarly though. I don't know how you guys did that!

My go to jersey is a 93 fox it’s super soft cotton. I cut slits with a razor to get air in but lap 2 it’s soaked.  90,s Mx was fun sand pits, etc all ovr yown. I ride the same ama  mx track I did since 1990 . We had 4or 5 full gates of 125 c in 98 , 2 of 125b , 125A full.  It’s non ama  now more of a Euro track round table tops, more lanes on the hills. Worked its good clay yrs ago wood chips mixed in loam.  It rained all Fri night into sat morning. I figured they wouldn’t race 12.00 the sun was going to shine & we would open ride at 3.  I get there last practice is about ovr. So I signed up & raced I never looked at the track either.  I had a bad reaction from a wed injection & nerve in back pinched hard .  A ton of injection lately & today at the hospital.  I did that in the 90,s fly home from rig job only 3 days off. No riding for months just sign up & race .  Sat I wore my 98 Shift pants with a TLD 09 jersey . 2nd moto there was some hardpack the pants are good for not getting rd rash.  I actually got new gear moose  Apha white, yellow.  Purple. I wore that jersey but not the pants . I didn’t want to get them dirty . Haha .  Helmet is a 09 fox I like the fit & the visor  , sweat runs out when u take it off.  I would’ve stayed with my 98 Shoei but mice ate the foam .

98 gear right & bikes ?  I wore my  Thor 99 or2k vented white & blue pants last week Sunday on the sx track .  It has some clay not all deep sand like the other track& 700 aces of trails .  I had mid hard tires on that’s why.  My best section everyone in the pit could see me , I fing ripped  that . I hit the berm fast & 2 clicks up hit a steep face table . I cleared it no one else got it clean.  A pro from Fl. WS there he asked me to ride with him during the week. He didn’t see me in the back crashing out in the 12 in deep sand & blitzing 5 big clay rollers . I went so fast I flew ovr a 7 ft high bowl berm.125 c- like.  . Haha.  That’s a 90,s riding  spot to with 90,s prices 10 bucks on wed, fri- sun 20. Stop at a lake going home jump in to get the sand off.   There’s s tracks with high banks in sand near by for free.  Kinda of like 90,s in Wi.   yet

I arrived in the Dirtbine scene in the late 70’s and the changes in the 80’s from aircoooled, drum brakes to the water cooled, disc brake bike was a great time in moto.

Nowadays the modern 4st bikes make riding for Joe average so much easier, especially for this 60yr old.

Yes. It was def more "real". If that makes any sense? People gave no shits about the material items and just raced motorcycles.

No social media "box checking" items (Shit like Yeti coolers, croc charms and $80k Toyotas), People were actually UNIQUE and not a bunch of clones, they drove junk custom race vans, ran vented number plates and duct taped everything. There was actual protection for your fingers in gloves and even collecting stickers and T-shirts meant something more because not every Larry had a sticker printer... I could go on and on.

I personally think the internet killed a lot of individual creativity in the last 25 years. It's sad when you think about it... because if many were shown the 80-90's most all would agree it was "more real and alive" than what we have nowadays.

My worthless $0.02

Modern gear is lighter and more comfortable. Way less durable, thats for damn sure. I still have some Fox gear from almost 20yrs ago thats in great shape. Its bulky as hell. But the modern gear made of tissue paper barely lasts a season.

I used the same pair of nylons for nearly ten years from the late 80s through to the 90s, and the only reason you bought a new jersey was because you wanted to. It’s amazing how fast the new stuff wears out.

Especially the super vented stuff for hot weather. When I say its made of tissue paper, that's barely hyperbole. One tip over in a corner and you shred the elbow. That old Fox gear I referenced still looks really good. My modern gear from a couple seasons ago, goes in the trash. Its just completely fallen apart

100% used to take the scizzors and cut holes all over old jerseys for hot weather, and they still lasted. Now you avoid washing too often so they don’t fall apart. I guess gear that lasts doesn’t return the same profit.

I was on a time out in the 90s building my career not riding and I still think it was the coolest era.   Showtime.

I don’t know if it’s the era that you grew up in that makes it so the older guys that grew up in the 70’s like that better but as a kid grewing up in the 90’s, nothing will ever beat the vibrant colors of graphics and gear.

I also feel that the sport took it largest leap towards what it is today in the 90’s.

I never understood being stuck in an era.

As fans,  we get to witness two of the most evolved riding styles to date. Watching Jett and Chase are like watching the future of our sport, and you just have to sit back and wonder how the hell are they going to go any faster.

Then you have Deegs, he’s like watching a stronger, more complex version of RC.

I loved the 80s, and then I loved the 90s, now I love what we have.

I do miss the custom helmets the 90s brought.

Crazy of how many 90,s cr125,s r out there yet.  91-99 was the highest #,s ever at the races .  95 x game tricks videos then the local riders busting the tricks out in races .  Amateur day was 13, 1,400 riders now it’s not much.  Aztalan non points race last sun had 21 50+, 25 40b usually 50+ is much higher.  Millville had hardly any.  The 50+ yr olds Really keep the local racing going . They raced from the late 70,s to now & hv there kids racing now.  The industry needs to pay attention of what’s going on . The 125 class is Big top riders make more from local buisnesses than a top 14th pro or a top 5 ax rider.  2-st class has been bigger than the 125 class in the last yr .  My body is destroyed from trucking last 4 yrs probably 3k needles in me .  I getting injection everywhere every week.  And riding the rainiest summer ever is effecting riding .  I rode a few hard hitting hill climb bikes .  My DBP has a sharper hit & better rush of quick power . So it’s a blast to ride .  I pulled quite a few new yzf250 30+ riders out of corners & 450,s in the track  on tight stuff & in the rollers . On 2 yr old fuel. I skipped practice & didn’t look at the track either . Still sick from burning oil smoke in cab , allergies here r the worst & the wild fire smoke . I had to waste a day going to the dr head all woozy , massive fluid in head , sinuses, lungs jacked up . Practice Bike with mod cylinder is just eiped down .

Loved the bright colors of the 90s.  Don’t miss waiting a week or two for the race to be on tv.

Its definitely the era that I learned how to ride.  The popularity as far a mainstream media made a jump, thanks to MC , TP199, the Xgames like them or not.

I like the modern material feel of current gear,  less so the ice dancer fit of everything... Still have 3 pairs of LBZ baggies I'll hold onto forever.

Was also the start of the video era,  when you had that excitement of getting this years crusty,  terrafirma, wrathchild exc.

I can't imagine anyone who witnessed motocross in the 70s thinking it later peaked in the 90s. To me, that would be like thinking Nirvana and Peal Jam in their heyday were superior to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd in theirs. You can think it, of course, you just seem...... kinda silly.

Naw 180-200 at local races in the 70,s vs 700-800 in the 90,s .  We had 2,500+ spectators at our local races. Local tv always at the races    A local rider told me he made 4,800 1 week racing Lake Geneva Fri night sx, & Byron IL. Nuclear series in 98.  Ax in the Winter sold out riders making great money . Jump contest was Huge .

Some of the places we could ride freely around here  would land us in jail now. We had a few ridding spots owned by wealthy people that we never actually had formal permission to ride at yet they knew and really did not care, kinda odd thinking about it now.

Hondas were the ticket. Everybody wanted to be like MC! Best bike I ever raced was my '96 CR250. Once the suspension was fixed, it rocked!

I miss the colors, the gear, the attitudes & the custom painted helmets.

My shop is my 90s Time Machine. Pop in a Terrafirma video or listen to some Alice In Chains. Grab a cold one or a big fatty and it’s kick back and chill. IMG 0796 1.jpeg?VersionId=tA9bnREUaSwUIMG 0799 4IMG 0800IMG 0795 3.jpeg?VersionId=IMG 0963 3

I think everyone has a different time that's the favorite to them. It was early 2000s for me because that's when I was a teenager into young adulthood. It's when I was racing and riding with buddies all the time. Things have changed a lot as I've grown older. But in 30 years there will be making guys making this same post about the time we're in right now being their greatest.

To be fair, the riders are more friendly nowadays. 90's elite were dripping w/ ego and high society vibes.
The affordability of the 90's is something I'll forever be thankful for. My dreams came true on a shoestring budget.
