The main part here is brothers. Had they not been that, then he would probably have done a Sexton by now and changed teams.

But blood is always thicker than water and at the end of the day, family comes first. Ofc Hunter want to win, but it’s a lot easier to handle it when it’s your own blood that beats you.

I’m sure he is getting more sick of the media trying to hype everything up than what he is of Jett winning.

Hunter seemed pretty disappointed on the podium after the second moto at Milville. Even JT commented that he shouldn't be disappointed with the result

Hunter straight out said in the press conference that not being able to get Jett in the second moto pissed him off and he wants to beat him.
But in true Hunter fashion he also said to beat Jett, he simply needed to be faster.

I don’t think anyone has ever heard about this.

Going from not even be able to buy normal food, without a home in a different part of the world to where you grew up. Yeah, you are going to be happy with millions in your bank account and a family not having to worry about money for the rest of their life.

Getting beat by your brother is ok.

I don’t think that it would automatically make him satisfied with being beaten just because he and his family had nearly nothing. If anything, it would seem like it would make that competitive drive higher.

Everyone I’ve ever met who ‘came from nothing’ and became very, very successful has an almost insatiable drive to win, even when they could stop and enjoy their successes a bit more. That drive is what got them to be successful in the first place.

I think that knowing that you’re often beating everyone but your brother might take a little bit of sting out of it, but I don’t think that Hunter is just accepting things that way and not trying everything he can to find some kind of improvement in order to start beating Jett more often.

At this stage of their careers, they probably aren’t actually pooling all their winnings 50/50 style and it sounds like those race win bonuses are maybe 3-4 times what second place pays. It would be difficult to see your brother bringing in upwards of $2M in bonuses alone while you’re collecting a couple hundred thousand.

And Hunter seems like the guy who will say the right things but is very hard on himself for not winning. Could be wrong.

If you have followed Hunter all the way from MXGP days you know when he is not happy. That isn't now.

He will be more like Tomac when a second place feels like shit because you want and expect to win.

You ain't going to see a rider that feels he is struggling with seconds laughing and joking around in the pits between races to the extent they are doing.

Life's good, family goes 1-2. Maybe if he starts going to 3-4 you will see him being competitive in his mind.

SX might be different if someone gets in-between.

I think the main issue is the media can't seem to find an edge to really make a story about with the Lawrence's. After they had a go at picking fights with people (i.e. Anderson, Barcia) the reality is being a tough guy doesn't make money, winning does. And no one can really say anything when you beat the field by 10 seconds.

Regarding Lawrence's, they're from a tradie dad background and if anything, Hunter has done "his part" racing / returning the wealth to the family. He was almost going to retire once before, and has had more injuries than Jett. He also is the reason Jett got hired onto Geico as well (not that Jett wouldn't have done well regardless, but them being a package deal worked well). And if they have done it properly, none of them will need to lift a finger once they both retire from riding if they don't want to.

In 20 years, if Hunter was stuffing Jett into corners and making them both go slow, they'd only be worse off financially, risk injury and have bigger grudges. Hunter is still a top 5 motocross rider in the world and arguably the only one that can give Jett a decent fight right now.

Anyway, I wish moto media would chill out and focus on the racing, not the nonexistent "mind games". Even in other main stream sports there is often nothing there. Max Verstappen just wants to drive cars and majority of the drivers hang out with other. In tennis, most of the players are friendly with each other and pair up occasionally for different charitable events (and sometimes doubles). Just focus on the sport and the racing / playing.

Exactly.

The F1 media is the worst.

Trying to create enemies and rivalries with a group of teams, and racers that live together in a traveling circus.

Moto media is guilty of the same thing.

Writer's gotta write.

Its not like Hunter and Jett racing eachother is new, they literally been doing almost their entire life. Sure Hunter wants to beat Jett, and also knows that some weird way he helped Jett to get to where he is too.

The Martin brothers, Stewart brothers, Hahn brothers, Partridge brothers, Wharton brothers, and Hill brothers, and many more I'm leaving out. Arguably, Jeremy was faster than older brother Alex, James was faster than younger bro Malcom, not sure who was faster between Tommy and Wil Hahn, Kyle Partridge had a better pro career than his brothers but mainly because Jeremy got injured, and Blake was faster than his older bro Tyler. I'm not sure who was faster between Josh and Justin Hill.

I can't think of one instance where any of these brothers showed animosity or ill will towards their brother in public or any other time.

So why would the Lawrence brothers be any different. They're not special from these other racing brothers, other than racing at the same time in the same class.

I would imagine him getting asked about Jett with the media pisses him off more.

Hunter is showing form of where he should be at the moment, remember his debut race or second race he ran with a prime AC92 outdoors 250.

No shame being behind a guy who is pretty much the best to throw a leg over  a bike.

Exactly, hunter is content and laughing all the way to the bank, I know it’s always speculated what they make is all structured different for different riders but he’s probably making 100k for a second in the premier class with everything combined. Those brothers are going to sit back in 20 years time with a beer in hand watching there old races laughing about how they absolutely crushed the sport and made it. Legends

Hunter will rarely beat Jett.  If you cant beat someone, you have no choice but to accept it or get better.

So you’re saying that Hunter is OK cashing checks and getting 2nd and therefore not working his ass off trying to get better and be the #1 guy?

If he is trying to be the #1 guy, then that means he’s not ok getting 2nd.

Being relentlessly motivated to be the #1 guy and being ok being 2nd are mutually exclusive.

Totally disagree with your point on multiple levels.

BUT I doubt Hunter's motivation is to be "the number 1 guy". When he knows and is shown, to his face, day in and day out, that Jet is that step above himself. (though that appears to be getting smaller).

Hearing him speak and how he thinks etc. I am sure he is far too pragmatic than to beat his head against a brick wall, believing that he can consistently beat Jett...(at this point in time).

My guess is his motivation is to be the very best he, himself, can be. That sometimes, incidentally, that means he might beat Jett, then so be it. And I see this reflected in his manner and appreciation of just how far this has taken him, so far.

My second guess is that his motivation is to be the best of the rest. He has seen Chase first hand, blow up trying to beat Jett and now possibly seen Tomac do the same thing......

Over time though, who knows how this plays out. Things change AND he is getting ever closer.

I'm interested to watch the family dynamic as they mature, start leading their own seperatelives, with wives, girfriends etc. That has a way of REALLY changing dynamics!

I thought it was interesting on gypsey when he asked dazzy if he could see hunter going to a diff team than jett and he said yes. I honestly think if he wanted to give it a real shot at beating jett this would probably be the best move. I know they have tons of advantages bike setup wise working together, but I think hunter being the #1 on a team and being able to train and ride with different people than jett would at least make it so he is doing something different than jett. Theyve figured out that hunter cant beat jett except in a blue moon at honda, so at least at a different team he could have different strengths and weaknesses vs the exact same at honda.

It depends on how good he can get the bike to work on his own since he clearly struggles more / is more picky on the setup than Jett.

I am a firm believer that Hunter is a better test rider than Jett, but they can also cut the testing time in half when they are on the same team. So I guess that Hunter got more to lose than Jett if they split up.

And I doubt that Hunter would leave the family compund if he changed team.

Hunter is mature enough to know he needs to beat whoever is in front of him and it is up to him. No point at getting upset about who it is, therefore I expect zero friction between the brothers - mostly. If it came down to a last lap takeout pass for a championship win I expect it would be understood - but not liked.

A little off topic but did any one else see the Jett interview with AC and RV?

Adam asked Jett about retirement or what a possible early retirement scenario look like and Jett suggested that Hunter retiring would probably be the most likely scenario for him to retire.

Weather that would end up happening or not who knows.

It’s an interesting hypothetical. Hunter does the testing hard yards for HRC and obviously gives good feedback. If he went to another team at the same time as Honda getting a new bike, how would Jett go developing the bike setup? I’d expect that to be a very interesting year or two, but I can’t see it happening.

Yeah I don’t see it happening neither. It’s just this weeks media topic to try to create some false excitement.

Yep, it’s been a family thing and he motivates his brother and vice versa, so I could definitely see that happening or hunter by his side in retirement!!!

It's a double edged sword imho. Would Hunter be as good if he left Honda and his brother? I don't think so and I even wonder if Hunter isn't contributing to Jetts greatness in some way as well. Either way Honda and the Lawrence boys have captured lightning in a bottle. I feel sorry for everyone else right now because they know at best they are racing Hunter for 2nd 99 percent of the time.

I would have to assume he's "competitive," but it's a thing where he has the exact same tools as Jett: same dad, same trainer, same bike, same staff. With all the variables controlled for he only has his immutable self to search for the answer to winning. In my mind at least it would somewhat calm my competitive drive to know that the only guy I can't beat has the exact same equipment and training and almost the exact same genetics. As Hunter himself says, Jett's just an alien.

Technically, siblings (who aren't identical twins) only share about 50% of their DNA.

Interesting. I think that Jett can, like Travis Pastrana, strike out and become bigger than MX; I don’t see the same for Hunter unless they do it together, which would be the smartest thing. Their current fashion collaboration being an early example.

There is definitely a younger brother thing going on. In my own home, my youngest of 3 boys was up and running at 10 months, He just had to be chasing his brothers. He matured at sports faster than they did until the moved on from sports. He is probably the best musician, again learning a lot from just mimicking them at everything.

I had a boss that coached little league in Claremont, CA. He watched Mark McGwire come up and we know what he did in baseball. He said though, that the youngest McGuire brother was a way better athlete better athlete than his older brother but lost the sight of one eye from a BB gun.

I don't think either brother could survive away from the Jett/Hunter/Dazzie triangle. They are definitely a triangle of success.
