DC and I spoke about this yesterday. There’ll be more discussions about it this weekend. He’s absolutely not for the restricting our post race access to teams and riders.

How the top 10 in each class is not required to show up to the presser every weekend is beyond me.

Miss one? $1k

Miss two? $5k

Miss three? $10k

Etc....

At the end of the day this is a job. The best at their job have more responsibilities, and that is true in most places of employment.

Not even if they're pukin' or hurt?  That's tough...hell that's double tough.

I mean, if all they gotta do is say, "I'm sick or whatever...what're gonna do?

Just turn ML, Lewis and and their compadres loose in the pits after the race to get the skinny.  Been working for a long time.

If the teams are pushing for it, I think that is insane. The teams themselves are in the business of getting attention for their sponsors. No attention, no funding.

Look at what seven deuce deuce  did,  and other racers that were a tick off of the top level that put in a little extra press work to get their name and sponsors out there. Look at what Deeghan has gained with the family Youtube channel. He came in with one of the biggest followings of a new pro that I can think of. And that extra press  that reached more people is what helped him.

You could say, the top guys get enough attention already with just their riding. And I would argue that a rider with the skills of Tomac and personality and accessibility of a 7 deuce deuce would be what everybody is looking for to grow the sport. Winning and just being a fast racer is only a part of it. Selling bikes, gear, whatever , is the part that brings the money in that allows the top guys to be able to make that money.

As a Pro racer, You should expect to be dealing with press at the races. I could understand if they put a restriction on press interviews after practice starts until after the second motos end. After that, if they are at the track they should do what they can to be available. While there has been a lot of growth in the podcasting and Youtube area of MX based content. There is still a tiny amount when compared to a lot of other Pro sports. It's wild to see how many there are now considering that a friend and I started one when there was only DMXS radio and us. But we did it very loose and unstructured. Seeing how big some of them have grown to makes me wish we tried harder and kept doing them.

Why would "They" ban pit interviews unless "They" want exclusive access ?  What other reason would there be to ban media access to the riders ?

I don't know the details obviously but from an outsiders view it seems like "Someone" wants to hold all the cards regarding interviews ?

Follow the formula one model, have the riders attend a press pen when they finish, be that after the race or during if they dnf (and are ok) then once they are out of there they are free to do what they want unbothered.

Both Pro Motocross and Supercross have tried this, but the riders and teams don’t show up. They just keep skipping it. In F1 and MotoGP, there are financial and sporting penalties for skipping these press pens though.

If only there was a solution for them not showing up.

Haven't read everything but I would imagine this is a move to increase participation at the press conference. I heard there were 4 media members at the press conference where Hopper asked AP about being future teammates with Eli. In my opinion that is laughable and not professional at all. Steve says he doesn't go because he wants one on one time and not give everyone his questions. I say a company like Pulp or Vital is big enough that they should be able to have more than one staff member at the race.

That really sucks. Would be so much better if all the riders went to that. Of course it was Mosiman. That guy is so down to earth and genuine.

He probably just went down there to see if there were any homeless people who needed help.

Pretty much the full weeks scope to dicuss comes from those interviews.

What the fuck are they thinking? Press conferences will not be better, because its a crappy environment where you will get PC statements from top 3 and that's it.

Make all top 20 riders go to press conference for 1.5h first, then you can shut down other interviews

Need to raise hell............???????

I'm not sure you know how a fiefdom works.

Maybe top 3 should be off limits after the press conference. If “moto media” wants to ask them questions that’s where it should be done. 4th place back should be available to media in some fashion.

They can always decline the interview. No big deal.

Money will keep some from blowing off their availability, but not all. If you penalized points, that’d really get some attention.

If they do this, are they going to get all the riders to a "media corral" where they will be accessible? Is this to round everyone up in 1 place? Otherwise I fail to see the logic.

40 riders?  WTH?  Who cares about anyone outside the top 10, I sure don't.  Top 10 for the race and top 10 in points should be mandatory to be interviewed.  It's not hard to set up some tents and stanchions to direct the rider and make sure each media outlets get to talk to each rider.  Kinda lame that these guys are getting paid millions and most of the time can't be bothered to give in interview to the media outlets that are busting their asses to grow the sport, which is partially the reason they're able to get paid so much.

I guess none of us have ever showed up to work hurt or sick before.

Yes. If they pulled off because of injury/sickness, no problem, but that wouldn’t land them in the top 10 so the point is moot.

Why we act like these guys, whom are among the most elite athletes on the planet, can’t gut out an hour to fulfill their responsibilities is absolutely beyond me.

I understand the top 10 like you say, but I’d like to see top 20. Get all the points paying positions for interviews and will at least get a few privateers with that.

I do agree there needs to be some sort of penalty if guys aren’t showing up that encourages them to show up. I thought a fine at first, but that doesn’t really work for privateers. $1000 to ET, Jett, Hunter, Sexton etc. is chump change in comparison to $1000 to Noren, Harlan, Tondel, Kelley. Docking points could be a possibility, but I’m not fully sold on that either.

I’m pretty sure Deegan won Hangtown but couldn’t make it to the podium because he was sick, and I don’t think anyone would argue he isn’t elite level fitness.

Just listened to LvK, looks like MXSports is shutting down pit interviews, forcing teams to turn away media members when they go up the riders after the races. MXSports has always been pretty backwards, but this is just absolutely horrible.  See 1:02:00 mark.

1. Media members will lose their jobs, and 2. fans will miss out on so much content. For me, the riders just half-ass press conference answers, and it's only the top 3 riders, so losing out on stories (e.g. rider crashes first turn, misses OA podium) and the actual insight you gain from an informal setting is absolutely detrimental.

Imo, it seems like MXSports is always trying to keep the sport small (this move will literally make our sport even smaller) not to mention the MavTV debacle, while Feld at least tries to grow the sport.

Honda probably complained.

The Nats exist for the OEMs

Do you really care about how Joe Shmoe's race who got 18th?  Would you actually watch that interview?  Because honestly I'm not, just like the vast majority of the viewers.  It's nice to say interview all points paying positions, but I think you'd be able to see the analytics its probably show that people stopped watching the video after the top 10, probably even after the top 5.  Interviewing all points paying positions would take a considerable amount of time.  BUT, it would be good for the privateer's sponsors to get some attention.
