I never understood why these riders use first gear as the risk of hitting neutral.  I never used first gear but I also wasnt at the top level. I also realize they run a taller gear ratio to spread first gear out more but damn.

False neutral- not having a gear solidly selected between higher gears, not true neutral between 1st & 2nd.

The video on IG said false neutral. He shifted in the air.

You mean, he didn't shift properly in the air.

It's his foot on the lever.

False neutral is not neutral. I don't think anyone running 4 speed+ uses first gear in outdoors.

assuming he's physically ok, that's gotta be a weird mental hiccup for him. The huge distraction of pulling his goggles, then the brain fart crash (which you KNOW is always bouncing around in his head) to then be lying there for 15 secs with the bike on top of him....to calling it a day.

That would shake even the most mentally strong.

His mental hiccups are a recurring thing. As are his wars with his employers, Honda, now KTM. I guess he had his hat forward this weekend?

I hope he’s ok. The series is better when he’s out there.

But that was the most Sexton-like series of events ever. Absolute shit luck with the goggles but then staying out there for what, two entire laps grinding it out without them that early in the moto? I get he was trying to at least make up some pace with that lead group, but they’re gonna pull away no matter what and you’re just burning time. Finally is looking like he’ll pull in, hits false neutral and pile drives himself. You can’t make this shit up.

If Sexton had a false neutral, then that’s why he crashed. Not because of lack of mental toughness.

I want everyone in the mental toughness crowd to go outside and try as hard as you can to find false neutral while riding. See if you can do it.

Agree… that was frustrating. I’m a fan of Chase but he was caught up in the moment again and not thinking big picture. A goggle stop would have cost him five seconds and he would have most likely rejoined in the top 10 with 20+ minutes left on the clock. I hate this for him, but that was a choice and now he is most likely out of championship contention.

If you watch the TV shots of him talking to the mechanics on the side of the track, he points to his head when they are asking him how he’s doing. My guess is he took a head shot somewhere in the crash.

Most likely? He's 50 points in the hole to Jett Lawrence. Its over. The only positive to come out of this for us is that he can ride now with no championship preasure and just go for wins. If hes not hurt, of course

Lots of debating in the comments. Did Chase say that or the IG page said that ?
I’d bet money that he landed on the rear brake, you can see the rear wheel lock up momentarily in the slow motion video I saw.

Which video?  Haven’t found one that shows him shifting and didn’t see rear wheel locked.

There's a replay clip I saw on YouTube from the opposite side of the broadcast footage, and it sure looks like as he lands, his right foot rotates forward and his toes point almost straight down just before he starts to get thrown forward.

Wheel didn’t lock up, but you can see it slow down before he gets thrown forward.

I guess it could be either, but the wheel definitely shows a momentum change

Ahh I see it now.

Just rewatched and he was upshifting right after that corner, and downshifting in the air before that landing where he ate shit. Seems likely a false neutral.

Some of my older BMWs and RDs have false neutrals between every gear. Slow, deliberate shifts are needed. The BMW transmission was a modified tractor trans so not exactly high performance. Smile

With him leaving KTM and the championship done, he won’t rush back. He will make sure he’s 100%.

My old, worn out 2002 YZ250F has about 11 gears if you count all the neutrals.  Of course, when you're old and tired it gets easier to find them.🙃

I've hit a few false neutrals on my KTM 690.

Won’t be shocking if he lines up at Hangtown compeletely fine. Jett lines up head case chase comes back immediately like clockwork. I’m sure he wasn’t feeling great after the dig but let’s not sugar coat it he quit.

I hate it for Chase. The guy has had some weird luck as of late for an elite athlete. Mentally as in confidence I think he is fine. Hate seeing it as I was looking forward to the battle of the three boys going at it.

I accidently hit my brake pedal recently after landing from a jump.  Yep, throws you forward pretty quickly.  Luckily, I was able to laugh about it since I was able to save it.  Not saying I am better or stronger than Sexton, but now I am thinking maybe I am.....    🤣

And Jett has crashed out of and not finished his last two racing series he's been in.  Anything can happen, especially with the way Eli can push him.

Did Dungey not race on an unrepaired broken collar bone in sx?

Nah he broke it during practice then raced SX and finished second in that race. After that it got plated and he sat out 5 rounds. He really was the Diesel.

Yea Schock is a menace as well.

I don’t believe I’ve ever hit a false neutral on a downshift, only an upshift, or bumping the lever accidentally without intending to shift. Did it once on a second-gear double right out of a turn years ago. I’ve never been thrown over the bars so quickly in my life.

Just seems weird for a downshift, but certainly possible i guess.

It's hard to believe on a factory KTM, but RMs came with false neutrals everywhere and your foot didn't need to be anywhere near the shifter!

That was an option back then.  Idea was when you stalled the bike you could look at the shifter and it may or may not just jump into some neutral.  Pretty novel idea.
99 KX 250 threw me over the bars warming the motor up and rolling an 18 inch whoop.  Damn neutral.
