If we are talking about current tracks that still hold major races that video was the toughest thing I have seen in years. If you listen to the podcast on Andrew Shorts website he makes it very clear that Southwick is nothing like it was 5 years ago. The loose top 10" of sand is gone.
Really wish we had at least 3 deep sand tracks and 1 rock hard (ala carlsbad) pack track on the circuit to mix up the points. Even Pala looks like they are trucking in dirt to make it just like the other tracks on the US National Circuit. What ever happened to racing different tracks in different parts of the country for diversity? Maybe they should plant some trees and grow some green grass to make it look better than a burned out waste disposal facility in the middle of the desert. How many profesional motorsports facilities look like that wasteland?

Lommel, no doubt, Albertson didn't ride it and was a guest announcer, said he'd never seen anything that tough in Amerika...Belpuig a close second when it rains.....

That was a pretty impressive video. Carioli was flying and that bike seemed to pull in that sand like it was a smooth hardpack track.One thing I thought was funny.......looking at the crowd I'd swear it was still 1970.Tongue

Actually, roughest track I ever rode was a practice track called Overpelt in Holland or Belgium (can't remember which). I don't think they held races there so it was never graded. Deep yellow sand and whoops you could hide a bike in around the full circuit.

Markelo GP 86 was also rough, but I looked for videos and all I could find was video of the start/finish area which is always graded between motos. Over the back there were whoops so big the fastest you could go was second gear.

beat me to it. I've never ridden there, but from what people who've ridden there have told me, the whoops on the whoops have whoops on them, it has jumps, none of which are doable now due to the roughness. And the straightaways are solid chest deep sand whoops. Most people can't complete one lap without wearing out.

Lierop is the king of nasty tracks.. went there back in 04 for the MXDN'S it was a hare scrambles course, rough, tree's in the middle of the course big nasty ass whoops and they seemed to move around each lap p...it was nasty.. the only thing i think is/was close is saddleback back in the day .. dirung practice there it was always like a national enduro...

What would the GOAT say??? That's easy, he said in no uncertain terms that the roughest track he has ever ridden was Zolder at the 2003 MXDN! I was there and i could not believe what those guys had to ride on.. Stupid rough..I seem to remember Everts saying the same thing.

Zolder, remember that name when you think of rough gnarly tracks!

Southwick is a freeway compared to other sand tracks. No disrespect to Dowdy as he's one of my favorite riders, but he can podium at a US national and then barely makes the top five in Canada at a different sand track.

It seems it's only Southwick that has any magic left for him. I do hope he's still got a big old bag of tricks to show us again this year though. I'll be cheering for him again.

There is a track in Mabton, WA located about 45 min. away from Yakima that I swear to god is the roughest track in the world. There was 90 people racing there that day.(Jim Pomeroy included) and the track by the end of the day had 3 foot waist high supercross looking rolling whoops the whole way around the 1.8 mile long track.
That was the most tired by far i had ever been while riding.

Yeah I had that race recorded on a vhs tape . Not sure if I still have it . That track definitely got chopped up .

Pierce, when I started racing D3 in the late 70's, we could never figure out out some of you guys (you, Rice, Levy, Caselle, Fred etc etc) would be so darn fast ( you guys were fast enough w/out the extra seat time!) so early in the season at Mexico, Broome etc. Once I got my first Pit News with pictures and results from the winter series it became clear. lol The winters are/were so bad that my first rides were usually the first races back then. Never had the resources (or time due to hockey) to get down there, but those that did said it was 5 times rougher than MotoMasters on its worst day!
BTW I have been to Valkenswaard and Lommel. They both make Southwick look smooth.

Our season started out there... I was sore for three days after that race!! I ended up 11th in Open B.... An hour and a half race will kick your ass good!!!

I'm also pretty sure someone stole the magazine that was hanging up... I haven't seen it in my last four trips there...
