I define coasting by either letting off to early or not picking up the throttle soon enough. It's a feeling that's acquired through countless laps.
When the traction is there, work on entry speed.
There are times when the motorcycle does not want to be slowed or accelerated. The tires are doing all that they can.

Dungey did it long before Jett did. I'm sure there was someone doing it before Dunge. It's not anything new. Roll speed, momentum, smooth is fast, fast is smooth, less effort.
Doesn't matter how fast or good you think you are. You're still slow as mud. Getting better is a rush, but there's always a faster few at chicken licks raceway.

One thing I always found that helped me was that concentrating on getting everything you can COMING OUT of a corner. When you focus ONLY on the ENTRANCE speed of a corner you tend to do blow out of the corner on exit and loose drive down the straights. The main idea is to hit the brakes the least amount possible and "drive" through the corner. Many people only think about corner entry and late braking which gives up WAY too much speed doing so. Brake early. Drive through the corner to the next one. Repeat.
Since your brain is thinking about corner EXIT.... your eyes will naturally look for corner exit without even trying and you will be on the gas much sooner... which equals more speed.

The first time I heard about roll speed was a Doug Dubach Youtube video. I think this came around more with the 4-strokes because all I remember early on was Gary Bailey saying either be on the brakes or the throttle.
Yes. before dungey I believe.10mph on the throttle is the same as 10mph coasting. As an old guy who raced 80s in the early 80s i was a typical slow kid. Full throttle. slam on the brakes .slide into a corner . Come to a stop. full throttle again. Not fast lol. There was a local pro Al Dyk who would later become Canadian champ. He would come into a corner the exact opposite. Much like fast guys today. Coast for a bit and roll the same corner im at a stop in at 15mph . guessing here but you get the idea.

On the opposite side of the spectrum When I was taught to speed shift thats when my speed and lap times drastically improved.
If its in a timing section its ok but if you are coasting you are not charging you are just cruzing.
I do more coasting when I'm on my 450 4 stroke. Seems I'm relying on Engine braking way too much. Really trying to change that. Totally different on my 2 stroke (CR500). Faster in, lots of front brake and steer with the rear. So much more fun and natural for me. Better flow too.
i think at the end of the day, if you can't be on the gas, it's better to coast than be on the brakes.
My language won't translate to everyone, but maybe a few will understand. Whatever your speed is, just analyze your corner entry speed a little bit the next time you ride.
Ask yourself if you can do it any better. I bet you can.
None of this stuff is necessary. Just add a tooth to the rear sprocket and you’re good to go!
