Had Canard not ran into his rear sprocket at one of the early California rounds in 2011 resulting in a DNF and had his fuel not boiled in outdoors that year at freestone he would have won both titles his sophomore year in the 450 class. I know it's a "If" but both of those things were out of his control. He would have only needed to place in the top ten in the SX round he DNF'd which would have been pretty easy given his consistency.
What a fucking legend. My favorite rider of all time. So level headed and kind. Taking years off just to jump back in for a season of outdoors and finish top 5 is truly insane.
Honorable mention, the dude had so few injuries compared to most in our sport. Rode smart and calculated. Pretty cool.
Dungey is top 5 all time
Dungey on a good day, good luck beating him. He had a whole bunch of good days!

The sx race where he caught and passed RV? A motivated Dungey was something else!
My first ever Gmail account was ilovedungey, so I might be a bit bias hahaha. However, there is a reason I chose that. Dungey was by far the most professional, kind-hearted, mentally strong and just genuine nice guy at the races. Don't be fooled though when he is feeling it, he was almost unstoppable. Will never forget the 2011 Southwick 450 Moto 2 (IMO best vurbmoto edit ever) Always wanted to be like Dungey when growing up. The best role model this sport has had.
RD consistency and just plain class act makes him standout. No drama on or off the track. He’s what riders should emulate.
His statistics are amazing and speak for themselves, but his story is maybe more amazing. I'd take his MX/SX career and process from peewee to pro to retirement over anyone's.
When I hear people say that Dungey wasn’t the fastest. He won titles on consistency, I just laugh and ask, did you not watch him in 2010 and 11?
He beat RV straight up several times those two years, and a fuel pump failure away from the 2011 outdoors title.
I think he beats RV for a few of those titles if him and Decoster stay on a healthy Suzuki team, instead he spend three years on a bad handling bike.
I think people misunderstood his smooth style for not being elite speed. You don’t become the second winningest all time 450 outdoor rider without being the fastest guy.
I think the coolest part of Dunge’s story was getting picked out of the B class.
The early part of his story is the coolest. Roger Decoster watching him and picking him was one of the greatest moves from Roger. How he put this all together is nothing short of spectacular. B class guy gets snatched up and given the coveted Suzuki factory ride. Then he followed Roger to KTM with an inferior bike. Great story and there's so much more to it.
A bit more to the story than that. Roger gets a lot of credit for what Cole Gress did.
I tend to be more of a fan of racers with an aggressive riding style. So during that era, I feel like I was gravitating more towards JS7, RV and Eli. And while I always liked RD, I probably didn't focus on him as much because he was so smooth. But after he left, I started to realize how much I underappreciated him as a rider and as a person. The summer that he came back to race was epic and I was really pumped to see how well he did, after some time off. But in general, I now really have so much respect for him and while it's unfortunate that I didn't appreciate it enough in the moment, I can admit that he was an all-timer, without a doubt.
This race was unbelievable live. It was so loud in the stadium you couldn't even hear the bikes. Last good race in the metrodome too. Dunge deserves all the credit he's gotten, and then some!
Dungey was awesome and one of the best.
I think he is 3rd or 4th with total big bike chips with 7.
Behind RC and Jeremy. Am I missing any??
Honest question - no disrespect: do you american fellas DONT KNOW that the rest of the world pirates the sh1t out of every american sport and watch it for free? I find weird when I see someone saying stuff like this. Its like, theres even a whole "russian facebook" thing called "VK" that has EVERY SPORT possible being uploaded there for us to watch for free. Sure, you gotta avoid spoilers for some 2 - 3 hours before someone uploads and that ruins part of the experience of chatting with fans while the race happens (the coolest part IMO), but thats how tons of non-us fans watch your sports.
I knew that people pirated stuff, thats how I tried to watch the 2022 nationals on youtube, I am grateful I never subscribed to mav tv and had to deal with that whole fiasco that summer. I didn't think that daily motion had pirated stuff, now it all makes sense, thanks for pointing that out, I will still use daily motion though.
Pit Row
Off the bike, too! He’s the one that got St. Jude linked up with SX!
Uhhh RV. I think Dunge is tied with MC tho.
RC - 15
RV - 9
MC - 8
Dunge - 8
Tomac/wardy/RJ - 7
I just watched that highlight video last weekend. Man, that was a great night.
I might be in minority here but I strongly feel that prime Dungey and Villo would have something for any elite 450 guy today. I don't think the factory bikes are that much better in the last 10 years.
I think spat was talking about 450 (or 250 two stroke) Championships.
You're saying he would have won both titles in 2012? That's one giant what if
I with ya on tht , the disciplined they both had to not only be fast as shit but take the placing they got if they was off & just accumulate pts was unmatched imo
2022 was a badass outdoor year for him for sure. im definitely biased lol but i think if he had a real year of prep before that outdoor year he woulda been top 3 guy. maybe not on the eli/chase level they showed but i dont think it’d be ridiculous to say he woulda been on the box often
Very boring guy to watch ride a bike.
First lap and end of second moto Southwick 2011

He is third. I have him top five all time overall. Fun fact: He never once finished behind Stewart or Tomac in championship standings (unless we count 2022 MX, which I personally am not). Went against each a lot too, and they were on opposite sides of him age wise.
Easily. Anderson finished 3rd and won Budds Creek. I like Ando but he couldn't hold RD's jockstrap outdoors.
