I just thought it was funny that wild animals was one of the biggest dangers you could come up with.

I must be doing something wrong, been riding off road for 30 years and never had a close call with an animal.

That said, you're not wrong I suppose, we lost one of the greatest racers of all time to hitting an animal.

It's really not the biggest danger. When I was 15 we were riding on an old fire road and it crossed a rural gravel road that was usually pretty deserted - except this time there was a truck driving on it. It was a blind intersection because of the trees, so you couldn't see it coming. The truck hit my buddy - straight on T-bone and killed him right in front of me. He should have been more careful. The crazy thing is, I'd just warned him about barreling through intersections in the trails and fire roads without slowing down and checking for traffic. He pretty much laughed it off. I'm still, almost 40 years later, afraid to warn people about things because I'm afraid that thing will then happen. I know, it's stupid.

I can ride on a moto track just fine - I feel like it's a controlled environment. But to this day, I'm always worried on a trail about what's on the other side of the next blind spot so I feel like I'm always riding nervous. I'm not saying it's rational - I'm just a little fucked up.

I agree with him. Everyone is going the same direction on a moto track, not so on trails (public trails for everyone's use  - not talking off road racing). You have no idea what's around the corner. I've come around a corner and there's a tree that's fallen.  There's wild animals (and in one case, a farmer's cow that had gotten out that my buddy almost hit). Deer are fucking stupid and will run right in front of you. Once had to go way around a badger. Not to mention being in the middle of nowhere. I've never been lost on a moto track but I've been in the bush wondering how the hell to get back to the truck. In rural Saskatchewan you may not have cell service so your phone may not help you.

My last injury was in the woods. Came around a corner and there was a dip with a weirdly aligned rut that I hit wrong and lawn darted myself into the dirt shoulder first. Was lucky to not hit a tree. Shoulder hurt like crazy but just got back on the bike and rode back to the truck.

I can cruise around a moto track at a comfortable pace and just head to the truck when I get tired. I'm  much less nervous there.

Personally I agree with him. Here in France at least, people who ride the woods are mostly beginners with little to no technique, with old bikes, no maintenance, no gear, etc.
Also 95% of the forests are private land, so as the owners get more and more pissed, they tend to put obstacles or barbed wire everywhere, which is dangerous af!
I won't even talk about trees falling everywhere with the wind and the lack of maintenance of the forests.

Motocross tracks are closed properties, where you need a license, an insurance and equipment. Most people know how to ride safely.
Sorry bud but that's day and night for me.

All those down vote are due to your last sentence.

It's " night and day".

I think there's dangers to both. At least at a moto track, there are people around who will come to your aid if you're hurt and need medical attention. I had a friend in high school who raced desert. He wadded up pretty bad out in the boonies and got knocked out. When he work up, he was flat on his back and looking at the sole of his own boot - and it was still on his foot! He had broken his femur so badly that it twisted around on him. It took his family and a chase crew hours to find him. No thanks.

"I wish I knew how to link it, does this guy just say stupid/controversial shit to make himself get clicks and stay relevant?"

Hmm. Does this question strike anyone but me as being a little more than ironic?

Offroad isn't for everyone...I'm glad all the ladies have safe controlled moto tracks to ride on...dirt bike equivalent of a "safe room"?  LOL

I'm kidding...the most dangerous part of a moto track are the jumps...give me a moto track without jumps (natural terrain only) and I'll give up off road and go race that.  But until then, I'll take my chances with the dust, rocks, "trees" (not many trees in the desert), wild animals, g-outs, speeds and unknown around every corner...

The reality is, everyone seems to judge off road from the footage of the fastest guys (pro's, AA guys)...news flash...we aren't the fastest guys...and the pace most of us ride (B, C, D pace...and Vet at that), so dang slow, off road is incredibly safe relative to moto.

A slow 30+ C guy can case a double and bust himself up...but that same 30+ C guy riding off road isn't going to be going fast enough to even hurt himself if he hits a tree/rock/g-out...So off road is safer for the average joe.  Pro level?  It might be even...Kalub Russell hitting a tree at his pace is going to do some damage.

Then why is Flat Track more dangerous than both woods and MX?

I would think the higher speeds and unforgiving walls on most tracks would increase danger.

It’s interesting the difference in opinions for each side. For me, I’m a track princess. I started riding bush trails but soon learned I didn’t like not knowing what was around the next bend whether it be a fallen tree, motorcycle or car coming the opposite way. The mx track has its own challenges, I’ve broken my back twice but I’ve always found it comforting knowing what’s ahead of me and to a relative degree you can only go as fast as your skill/technique allows on most tracks with turns, jumps, ruts and bumps. What amuses me the most these days is jumping used to terrify me whereas I get super bored on a natural terrain track now.

I know it seems backwards, but I am definitely more dangerous (to myself) in the woods than I am on a track. Which really sucks, because the older I get (51), the more I should be pivoting to woods/offroad. Maybe it is just the trails I have ridden, but I am a lot more comfortable challenging myself on a nice and predictable groomed track.

The first lap in an offroad race if you are truly pushing is so sketchy because you have no idea what's around the bend or over the hill.  Then the second lap the entire course has changed lol.    I think riding in the woods at a serious pace is probably harder to do but I'm not sure it's more dangerous.  It's all sketchy.

I raced Moto growing up, I always practiced at my grandparents house, they owned a couple acres of wooded ground and I had a small track woods loop type of thing with a couple small jumps, some of my worst crashes growing up was practicing at my grandparents and tagging a tree, they don't move

I have thousands of miles through the woods.

I have more friends in wheelchairs from moto.

I've had my share of collar bones and stuff, but riding woods in Texas doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as moto when it comes to critical or fatal injuries .

I have no statistical data other than riding both since the 70's, riding woods at the ranch since, racing woods for 5 years or so, and working at a motocross track for 15 years.

So, we are into a competition as to what's more dangerous to do, are we?

FFS.

I've ridden for most of my 65 years. Been hurt in all types of riding, ( and other endeavours ) as, I've done a Lot of riding, and, other sports.

I mainly did Off Road / Enduros.

Still, permanent injuries 'allowing', I do Off Road, and, ride my mates Grass Track  / Sand Track Paradise, as often as I can. I am always thinking of getting to a Club MX, or one of those Amcross (? - they seem to be reminiscent of Thumper Nats Tracks ) races.

At Club Level - I always did ( years ago) both our Enduro series - (Think GNCC type racing) and Motocross. When 'dedicated' Off Roaders / Enduro Riders  said to me "why take the risk of Motocross", I'd say everyone is going the same way, there's ( well, there should be) Nothing else coming towards you, and, there's an Ambo Right there. Always felt MX was safer than being out in the bush, risking head ons / being The Bull Bar Tester, and, hoping the Troopy or Chopper would get to you....

Either way, it. : Riding, is a risk - there's no need for any argument / kudos seeking for whatever side you think is riskier / harder.

One point - I do Believe the Flamin' Trees can move !

Those Bloody Ents, have a grudge against Man, and, Me, specifically..............!

PS - Hitting Wildlife - yup, I've hit 2 Wombats - they are like hitting a Brick Wall, been skittled by Wallabies / Roos  a few times, and one time, by a Goanna / Perentie ( a fuggen Big Lizard). Oh, and there was the time a Horse took me out, but that was on a Public ( though Dirt) Road, on my way to work.

Getting impaled by a tree seems way safer than just crashing in the dirt.🤪  My kid likes the woods stuff some and I hate it.  I really can't believe people with little kids just send them off and hope they come back alive.   I think a lot just has to do with what you grew up with like has already been said.

I'm not sure if it's Henry Wiles ( nah, looked again and it was Bryar Bauman  - I see the #1 and think of Mees ) that was part of that, but there's another prang that Wiles was in, much like that in coming out of a turn, where the bike had the front end ripped off, and it / the bike, hitting the head of either Wiles or the other rider.

It was fearful stuff, and, whoever was the one that had the bike / front end to the face, was very bloody lucky, in their bad luck.

Dude, if I had 6 balls I still wouldn't have enough sack to try flat track - those speeds and what could go wrong. Not for me 🙂

I've got mates - Old , like me - that are always trying to get me to race Short Circuit - our 'Flat Track', but generally, with a RH thrown in, like  your TT Racing.

As Nepean Speedway / Raceway, is only about 15 miles from me, and I drive past it at least a few times a month.

They say my CRE500, would be perfect for it, as it has a Trials Tyre on the back ( for my local bush riding) 90% of the time, and a Fat Gummy Knobby on the front.

They say it's far  Safer and Easier than other riding ........ Yeah, right : I'm absolutely and Thoroughly sure I'd Axe myself completely , because of those foolish perceptions of it. I did a bit of it years ago, and, it ain't 'flippen Tiddly Winks.

Why bring me into it?

Turns out you are the negative one after all.

He said riding, not racing so there may be a difference. Turns out I am on the ground a lot more in the woods but I am sure that has a lot to do with the type of trails we ride.

I think it's a matter of perspective and experience. I grew up on moto tracks, and some supercross, and riding through the woods 3rd gear pinned ABSOLUTELY scares the living hell out of me more than any jump or rutted downhill.

That being said, AJ is a completely self-unaware narcissist. But hey, he would be champion on Jetts bike, so who are we to disagree with him.

He honestly has zero self awareness and is very narcissistic.  He takes cheap shots at everyone around him constantly in his videos.  It’s so hard to watch.
