BMW Motorrad is rumored to be eyeing a takeover of Austrian rival KTM, according to a report from oe24. However, the potential deal is already stirring controversy, with claims that BMW plans to relocate KTM’s operations out of Austria, potentially putting thousands of jobs at risk. KTM, Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, has been struggling financially and entered self-administration late last year. On Tuesday, creditors will vote on a restructuring plan that would allow KTM to repay 30% of its €2-plus billion debt by the end of May.
Reports suggest the company has secured up to €900 million from outside investors, which could help it meet its obligations and stabilize operations. However, if the creditors reject the plan, KTM could be forced to declare bankruptcy, potentially opening the door for BMW to step in. According to oe24’s sources, BMW’s reported takeover plan would strip KTM of its Austrian roots. Instead, BMW would move KTM’s research and development (R&D) to its Munich headquarters, while production would shift to India, where KTM already has manufacturing ties with Bajaj Group. KTM’s Austrian workforce accounts for 4,500 employees.
BMW’s MotoGP Aspirations Gain Traction?
Beyond KTM’s financial struggles, this move could also signal BMW’s long-rumored entry into MotoGP. BMW has previously expressed interest in joining the ultimate motorcycle racing series in 2027, and a takeover of KTM-one of MotoGP’s most competitive manufacturers-could fast-track that ambition. Last year, BMW reportedly acquired data from Suzuki’s now-defunct MotoGP team, fueling speculation that it was preparing for a future entry. The Bavarian brand currently competes in World Superbike (WSBK) and won its first title in 2023 with Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, who has hinted at wanting to race in MotoGP.
Everything hinges on Tuesday’s vote. If creditors approve KTM’s restructuring, the company could survive under its current ownership with fresh financial backing. But if the plan is rejected, KTM could go bankrupt-making a BMW buyout much more likely. We reached out to BMW Motorrad for a comment and we will update the article accordingly. Rumors of insider trading driving wild stock swings is a bit of a wrinkle.
I’m sure it was someone’s plan to relocate all production to a 3rd world county at some point. This gives them a convenient exit strategy.

BMW is going the Ray Zalinsky route from the movie tommy boy! 😂
Tommy: But the Callahan (KTM) factory has been in my family for seventy years. You can't just shut it down.
Ray Zalinsky: Son, you got to look at it from my point of view. Callahan's (KTM) a premium name. That's what I'm buying. I can make the parts (motorcycles) in one of my factories (in india), put them in a Callahan (KTM) box, and sell them in my stores at a premium price. Why keep your factory going when all I want's the god damn box?
Restructuring plan is a go.
Creditors voted for the plan which will see PMG repaying 30% of the debt by May 23rd.
Now PMG and investors will formalize their plans to come up with 800M required (possibly partly with loans, Bajaj is said to contribute 150M including 50M as a loan).
Production is set to resume gradually from mid-March.

So now they just to see if they can reign in spending to stay out of debt. I am interested to see what cuts they are planning if any.
Cuts...🤣 They already had a second press release stating they are already looking to borrow another 800 mil. Why would anyone think anything will change when they have already been allowed to commit and get away with business robbery of billions. KTM...we can't pay our debts. Austrian officials and creditors...that's ok, we'll cover your fuck ups so you can borrow more.
you could take a crap in a box and put a guarantee on it. All you are guaranteeing is that you have a piece of shit.
Kind of my thoughts as well. I’m guessing the threat of moving production to India motivated the Austrian government to step in - in some fashion. It’s still a tight market so it’s not going to be an easy road ahead.

Settle
down everyone…..KTM has a plan to increase profits moving forward…….
My reaction is either "are you kidding me?", or "OK, this is still meaningless until we know where the money is coming from.".
Quick takeaways:
Creditors overwhelmingly accepted being hosed, out of concern they would get really hosed.
Banks did not get what they wanted.
In a rare case I was actually...rooting for the banks??
Bajaj is putting up $50m right now, plus perhaps more...
What are they getting for this?
To restart production, they need 150 - 200 MILLION EUROS ALONE.
Another 600m needed by May to move forward.
Where is that coming from?
That may be more important than what happened today.
Pierer putting in the whopping sum of zero. Not even a symbolic amount!
Pierer still buying Rosenbauer on the side.
What will be the KTM fan base reaction? Will they view this as a win?
No one talking about effects of their own projection to lose $1b over the next two years.
How will they have enough cash to operate????
What cuts will they make to themselves?
More questions than answers.
My furrowed brow will get no rest.

I dropped a G on some PMG shares when it was under $10/share. Securing my retirement over here!
I just tried buying $2,000 worth of stock, sale hasn't gone through yet, but roughly 82 shares.... will keep y'all posted on the result. I did it in my roth, so I can sell at any time.
"Pierer putting in the whopping sum of zero. Not even a symbolic amount!"
Pierer sounds like a real asshole. I really don't know what else to say.

Yeah....i'd rather take the butcher's word for it
On the 250C Limited gates at Hangtown this weekend, at least 50% of the 30+ bikes were Austrian FEs. A few Kawis and Yamahas, a Honda or 2, I think 1 Triumph. KTMs financial issues don't seem to be affecting racers. I saw at least 6 other GG MC250F FEs on the line. Ours ran flawless all weekend and is a far better bike than our 22 FC250. I sure hope KTM keeps it together.
Cyclenews has a good breakdown of what this means:

The BMW takeover rumor doesn't seem likely. Bajaj Auto appears to lead the way with investments.
This isn’t the first time a large corporation has killed off some minor suppliers. By triggering voluntary administration it may have kicked some of these companies insurance in on outstanding monies which can be up to 90% of sum owing especially now the plan is approved.
Some just plain won’t survive.
It’s not fair, it’s definitely not right but it was always going to happen. PMG have the funding in place, it just needed the sign off to get things going. The next 3-6 months there will be some extremely cheap PMG products flying around, cheaper than have been available before no doubt
The numbers doing the rounds are: Pierer put in 200M, Zöchling put over 100M, Bajaj 150M and CFMoto even more. In total the money for the restructuring plan, including the 548M€ deposit before May 23rd, will come from 7 investors. That means the debt was 1.8B.
Restructuring plans for KTM components and KTM F&E (R&D) have also been approved, they will reimburse 30% to creditors in under 2 weeks. Their debts were 76M and 102M, respectively, which puts the total amount of debt recognized by the court to 2B for the 3 companies.
A very good summary in this piece: https://m.gpone.com/en/2025/02/25/motogp/ktm-ag-safe-restructuring-plan…
Thanks for sharing that - very informative.
On a humanitarian note, has anyone seen MxAddic since this news has come out?
I’m actually a bit worried that this just may be the gust that blows him over the ledge.
I see that in the article, but are you certain it is correct?
I have been following their case in every Austrian source I can find (cost a bit in subscriptions) and hat is the first and only time I have seen any reference to Pierer putting in money.
I don't see any references to those amounts being already invested or even promised by them. Everything so far has indicated they need to go find money still.

Could be wrong though, as I haven't dug around since this AM PST.

I've read multiple reports that Pierer had injected over 100M of his own money in the process, before Christmas to pay workers bonuses in time. At least one of them stated that nothing could become public before the end of the restructuring.
As David Emmett wrote in the article you linked
"There is no official news as to exactly where KTM will find the €548 million in funding, though at an extraordinary shareholders meeting in January, Pierer Mobility agreed to issue bonds and shares against extra investment. Whether Stefan Pierer, through Pierer Industrie AG, will lose overall control of KTM will only become clear once that funding has been secured."
From Diepresse link
"Another creditors' committee had already been convened on Monday evening. The debtor representative - the lawyer for Stefan Pierer and the management of the KTM Group Pierer Mobility - as well as the creditors' protection associations took part. The main topic of the meeting was the open questions surrounding the investor plans, which were again discussed in detail."
I think the exact numbers and investors name will become public quite soon, I expect CFMoto, Bajaj, Pierer and Zöchling to bring a very significant part of this. They first needed to get the restructuring plan approved, now it's on to the finalization of the investments (voted during the extraordinary general assembly of January 27th).
Also I believe Günther Wiesinger, who wrote the article for Italian website GPOne, is probably the best informed reporter on anything related to KTM, I do trust his reports.
Interesting to read that 3500 creditors approved the plan and 37 did not, although of course what really mattered is how much debt they controlled.
"I've read multiple reports that Pierer had injected over 100M of his own money in the process, before Christmas to pay in time for workers bonuses..."
That absolutely did not happen. It came from KTM and a government insolvency fund.
I appreciate your many good contributions to this thread, but in the countless hours I spent researching for this series I wrote, I saw over and over that Pierer was NOT putting in money.

Particularly on part 4 I looked into everything about Pierers role so far.
I'd say the AT media and AKV have it on the Italian journo too.
I hope this doesn't seem snarky, it isn't intended that way. If you have anything talking about Pierer actually putting in money I need it for Part 5.
BP
Thanks but I am just fine.
BTW, in case you have not noticed Pierer has to come up with the money. I don't think you will find I ever stated the plan would not get approved.
