I’ve been avoiding the Loretta’s thing with my son over the years mostly because he had zero chance of making out of regionals and I’m firmly in the camp it’s an overhyped money grab by mx sports. This year however I do think he has a shot and he’s putting in the effort off the bike so here we are. He’s got a dream of making it so what’s a father to do?  I have not changed my stance on the overhyped money grab however. My biggest problem is what Loretta’s does to class structure in local racing. You have kids that truly are in their first or second year of racing lining up against kids that have been racing their entire lives with serious speed. This breeds more chaos in a class that’s already chaotic and imo isn’t healthy for local grassroots racing. For instance I wanted him to move to B this season. I literally told him we’re not doing Loretta’s and you’ll latch on to their speed locally and be fine. He was finally starting to accept that plan until he decided he’d stay C and give Loretta’s a shot for one season. So in essence he’s now potentially a local C sandbagger because he’s got zero prayers in qualifying in Loretta’s B. I don’t have the answers on how to fix it but it needs fixed imo.

He’s not that kid. He’s grown up watching moto since he was old enough to hold an iPad. He lived it as much if not more than I do. At 45 years old I think it’s stupid yes. At almost 16 he views it as a one year opportunity to try and do something he’s always dreamed of doing and will likely never do again. He’s a good kid who thanks me every time he gets in the truck or RV after a practice or a weekend of racing, so I’ll do my best to make it happen this year. We’ll make some memories doing it and I consider it money well wasted. Total honesty I’ll be happy if he achieves his goal and equally happy if he doesn’t but stays healthy.

See the 4 tracks there all awesome. Full gates fun local  q,s r cheaper . Millville practice fri race sat,sun memorial weekend & get it dialed.  If I don’t get sponsors to pay for LL.  I don’t go simply as that.  I need a few neck, back, hip, rear of shoulder injections . Then I,m good . Remember in 83 I had numerous D1 bball offers & football 4 the Badgers even tho I did not play ft.  68+ vertical, flat 10 100, tap a quarter off the top of a backboard.   I had to pay rent in 10th grade during the season . Mom wouldn’t let me access my savings of ovr 3k money saved working 4 farmers.  Forced me to get a job .   Not a phenom teen anymore but physically still wayy more than anyone on the gate.  And I Love extreme heat & humidity.   Total waste of time trucking out here.  I,m sure Mav will post my pic when I was off injured for 9 + weeks doing nothing. Any 1 with 1/2 a brain could see that persons body has it. If I exercise a couple times it’s a Olympic level bod.

I actually like most of the stuff that you post,  but you need to stop it with this crap of you not racing unless it's for money.  Nobody is going to pay the 50+ class.

I think if you went to a regional qualifier you would run into some bad mf'ers that you didn't know existed. 40 and 50 plus guys that train like pro athletes.

Yes it is very expensive, but if he makes it, it’s the best week in all of motocross just to be there. Just by qualifying his confidence will be sky high to go back in B/Schoolboy next year. Hope he makes it, good luck to y’all.

Sounds like you and your son have a great relationship and realistic expectations. Good luck with his quest to make LL!

Jeff Alessi and Mike LaPaglia both raced C class at Ponca City the first year they were on big bikes, I was there, even after racing LL’s on mini’s several years. For some reason Ron Henrickson (NMA) allowed it. They did not race C class the following week at LL.

I mentioned that above - They tried to race Lorettas and got shot down quickly from what I recall.

I dont know if its reality or just my memory, but from what I can recall the fenceline was just as packed for the C class that year as it was for the pros....there was some fantastic racing (and sandbagging) in the C class all weekend.

Hope we both make it - sounds like we and our kids have a lot in common. I grew up in PA so there's that too. Family is from Watsontown area, parents went to Bloomsburg, I used to fly fish Fishing Creek on the regular. We'll have a beer or 3.

Yep, I remember Ronnie Mac racing C class around this time as well.

That’s complete bullshit. I for one will contribute sponsorship money for the mythical DBP/Super Trucker road to Loretta’s 2025 campaign.

been awhile since I promoted or worked any area or regional qualfiers.

have the areas changed?

at one time if you went to an area and got top 15 or so you could send in to go to regional.

they would run qualifiers at the regional to get it down to a full gate, split class for first moto, then a LCQ to get it down to a full gate for the second and third motos.

70 or more C riders at a regional....... Ka Ching.....

Remember when regionals only had 40 eligible riders advanced per class?

The story telling in here… Malcom raced Loretta’s 6 times before going to big bikes. He raced B in 2006, not C. Same with Jeff Alessi, had been 5 times already and raced 85s at LL in 02 and 03, not C. He went B class in 2004. Neither one of those riders were eligible to race in C ever.

I know for a fact that Malcom raced some C class races. My timing may be off, but not that. Same year I believe Tevin Tapia won most of the C class races in the Am National circuit. I think that it may have actually been 2005, but one does not forget lining up against that kind of talent, seeing big James on the line talking to Malcom was pretty surreal after talking to him the year ot two prior at Washougal and getting introduced to JS7 by him. Both James' signed my Washougal 04 national mag with JS on the cover.

Malcolm might have raced some C classes outside of Loretta's but the rule was if you've been to Loretta's on a mini bike you could not return to the C-Class on a big bike even back then! I think Malcolm might be a year or two older than my son but I know the rule was in effect back then for him.

I have a buddy with a couple yz450fs. I bet he’d let you use one. If not I’ll ask my local dealer - they sponsor my son and are good people with tons of used bikes in the warehouse. Worst case you can use my 22 FC250.

I can vouch for the OP. A Georgia Legend. There wasn’t a C class, in fact there was Amateur or Expert in AMA sanctioned districts or Amateur or Pro in Outlaw. Circa 1982. If you raced a solid structured AMA district and were fast and won - you would point out within a year or so and have to move up to Expert. Once An Expert Always An Expert. When you started racing big bikes you raced against other experts and Pros. If you were a mini bike expert and moved up to 125s or bigger you made a huge leap. No sandbagging. The results spoke for themselves. To put this into proper context- what we call a C rider now is a solid B or A-minus rider then. The OP is making an observation based on experience of who he raced at his age back in the day.

Maybe I got a little carried away . Fri 16.00 del long story of 2 location I was told 1. My Ukraine dispatch doesn’t hv a ld sit in ft . Wayne till Mon.  2 -3 snow storms per day, night Fri- sun.  2 days of laundry, worked on my taxes, etc hit a strip club across the street. They wear tops so it’s not much. Then watch yt I stumbled across LL 125 c 2019 . He started good top 12 worked up to 6th . Top 5 disappeared 6th to 20th making mistakes.  Then a couple mini dad mega rich families 1 was from Livermore,ca.  they paid 4 clips of Vilo to make it Big. Totally ridiculous videos .  Wi. Has a fast 50+ class only 1 goes to LL now.  45+ 7th was his best, 50+ 9 to 11.  He’s fast & wins a lot.  But there’s other riders that r faster .  But they rarely race , a 6-8 guy is 6th at the world vet.  I looked at the national prices Wow I had no idea it that expensive. And you hv to pay for camping ?  700-900 ouch.   Check these results out . RC in 25+ , ever here of Cody Kamm he still races pro ams . He beat Anderson & AJ .  Dustin Pulley we inherited him from Indiana. He’s 1 of the few that had 2-st vids yrs ago. Hie got 4th ovr all his wife I knew her since she was little said . He got no offers 4 sponsorship after the race.  He worked at her dads bike shop , kind of a industry guy.  Real cool guy too .  IMG 2440

You pay the regular entry fee and then on top of that you have to pay the LL fee if you are trying to qualify. Remember that when you are going for +50 and C class on your 125…plus the promoter knows this is his cash cow race so they jack up the gate fee, add some golf cart/pit bike fees, you need to run the extra 15 minute practice the day before for $50. And then add gas and lodging because it’s not a local race for many…not hard to add up to $1k

Yup, plus food and fuel for 3 days at the track. Gas to get there and back will be $500 since it's 600 miles one way...

Yup, plus food and fuel for 3 days at the track. Gas to get there and back will be $500 since it's 600 miles one way from Portland to Hangtown withy lots of big climbs getting 10 MPG with the trailer. Hotel for 4 nights is $585. Sold the toy hauler so not camping at the track this time. $1000 is low for this weekend - it'll exceed $1500 for sure cause I am gonna DESTROY some sushi at Mikuni's while I am there. It will be $1000 for Washougal Regionals since it's local to me. I bet I've spent $15-20k a year the last 2 years on racing, and we are nobody.

I just checked the national fees Wow . The Canadian championships r 10% of that.  6 ft cool trophies , medals, killer track IMG 2446.png?VersionId=0w.5gYwf etc.  or the RacerX vet series in 5 states track in Mo. is new too far only need 3 rounds for awards.  Sunset ridge probably the best track , Millville & red Bud , Aztalan gets a big turnout.   Hard to bag on 125 c there Real fast but not as fast as 125 b,c .  Drop the c in that class no c rider ever qualified.  There is no 125 expert or pro class that’s the problem.  In Wi. You can race 250A & the 125 class.  Guys that qualified for nationals hv raced it . A 125 state title is big . Still get to race the LL riders.  I figured it out a few weeks ago 10 weekends most r double headers 711.00 in gas 15 mpg @ 3.10 a gal.  Race fees 30-35 camp 10, gate 10 . Xmas Mi. Gas is 163.00 . KC -11 & snow all night .  Pic + a camping fee.  Maybe Rita would cut me a deal. I used to call in the off season & she answered . We joked around she’s Real nice.

Race day at hangtown. Perfect weather and look how green it is!!!  I’m in about $1100 so far and haven’t paid for Sunday classes or fuel to get home. But the sushi at mikuni’s last night was top notch and today Mayson will come hang out with us. Track is a 2:04 for my C class rider. Pretty wet to start the day and was rutted and rough by the end yesterday. Quite a few on the ground throughout practice. Not us. Rode smart and saved himself for racing. IMG 6282 1

If this is your first LL, you have to remember it’s a national event. A c class in cali is going to way faster riders the day Montana just because of the depth of the field.

Post a reply to: LL C class is a joke
