I've never ridden the Stark... but... my guess is.. they softened up the power down low for that tight azz track... which.... moves all that luscious power up top... IMO.. he gave it a "squirt" of throttle on the jump face, and got ALL the power at once..... basically.... electric power sometimes feels buttery smooth... but can be programmed to be gnarly AFFF too... 

However...... this brings in a bigger problem that not many of you have faced or maybe even heard of..... I've race electric for 2 decades... we have a term for when it all just goes randomly haywire........ and its called glitching......

ever have your phone just do something wonky out of the blue?? or anything electrical for that matter??

Now imagine you get a little "glitch" on your 80hp electric bike while riding.... doesn't take much!! especially at the wrong time... it might cut power, it might give you ALL of it - randomly... LOL....  I've seen it mostly when whatever speed controller im using is dying.... i've seen them die and go WFO permanently.... LOL..... these are electronics we are talking bout here.. not pistons and rings... LOL... 

then there is blowing a rotor.... i have yet to hear about this happening much in the motocross world.... but it happens when racing electric... when your rotor lets go... it basically breaks/and or shatters and the rotational forces slam it against the can...... feels exactly like when an ICE engine completely locks solid...  

gas has its downsides... electric does too... Taddy isn't wired for electric thats 1000% for sure... LOLLL

Dude you have a couple reasonable points, but like you said you've clearly never ridden a Stark and are missing some of the huge and valid points others have brought up.

To me the bottom line is you can literally WATCH his right hand drop to what looks like wide open, meaning I think the outcome was what he intended. Again, if his electric bike just "glitched out" that bad, you really think he's getting right back on to continue?

Maybe I'm wrong but I have a feeling your "decades of racing electric" is RC cars? If so, brother it ain't the same thing.

  Taddy's bike is set up at 48HP; not 80HP.  I although I don't know for sure, I can say with confidence that the power mapping (or whatever it is called) in his bike is not what you get on a OEM Varg.

I'd say that is an accurate statement. They've done an update before that changed the throttle mapping for all of us normies(not in a good way). Since the rules dont state a maximum torque, they could technically still have the bike make maximum torque and just limit the hp.

For an electric motor, power is voltage x amps.

The Varg battery pack uses cell configuration 100S 4P (4 parallel sets of 100 cells in series), each individual cell nominal voltage is 3.6 V, max discharge current is 45 A.

For the pack that is 3.6 V x 100 cells in series = 360 V nominal voltage, 45 A x 4 parallel sets = 180 A max current.

Throw in motor efficiency about 90%, max power is 360 V x 180 A x 0.9 = 58.32 kW or 78 hp. Or if motor efficiency is 92%, that gets you to 80 hp. 

Now limit current to 135 A, you got yourself a 60 hp Varg. Limit current to 108 A, you got yourself a 48 hp Varg, just like Taddy raced in world championship.

In short, battery cells are the main limitations for power, not the motor nor its rpm. And you can very simply adjust power by restricting max current delivered to the motor.

How do we know that any bikes are legal ?????  Everybody is trusted until they get protested .  Stark has said they will provide software to allow officials access. 

 

Would 80 HP really be an advantage on such a tight course?  other than starts I bet that a rider makes more of a difference than the HP jump from a 250 to 450 on such tight stuff.  Less HP might even be faster.

It’s maybe a nit, but you can limit the voltage as well and in some cases it would make a significant difference. The FIM, FFM and Motorcycling Australia officials have been testing this system for months before allowing electrics to race, it's been now over a year of racing.

You guys know what a pivot turn is right? Well this is clearly a failed pivot turn, and it looks intentional to me. 

In the video you can clearly see him weighting the bike before yanking the bars and going full throttle. He pins it, look at his hand, arm, elbow, they go down very quickly. If he did it correctly (not full throttle), he would have had no issues (besides maybe using the Beta rider for traction, but that not unusual so no issue there). 

And the bike did exactly what you would expect it to do, it comes straight up, violently, lol. 

If you haven't ridden one of these Varg's or Alta's, the power come on instantly, and if you go full throttle, you better be ready for it. 

I've done plenty of pivot turns on my Alta while trail riding and I would NEVER even considering going full throttle to do one. Just a little crack of the throttle, yank the bars, let off the throttle when it come up, spin it around, drop it, off you go, easy peasy. 

And as mentioned, he claims the bike is unpredictable, but gets right back on it and rides off? What the heck? 

And also, as mentioned, Eddie Karlsson is not complaining about any issues and is having a good season in the same series on his Varg. 

My take is Taddy is frustrated at not doing better, is not adapting to the bike, and is quitting like a cry baby and taking his ball home with him to sulk. 

And good luck getting on another team Taddy, not sure any other mfr's would pick him up knowing he might bad mouth them mid season and quit.

IIRC they've mentioned reducing power was also limiting torque but they did not really detail if they were limiting current or voltage or both.

Hard to say.  Whiskey throttle on a high-HP bike with no transmission was one of my two fears considering electric.  But looking at his approach to the jump he was not out of control, but it almost looks like something went wrong on the face, and he was on the brakes after landing and it looked like it was not stopping.  It also kind of looked like he was trying to tap the rear brake in the air and that was not working (brakes work, motor on different agenda).  On landing, I can't tell if it was whiskey throttle or stuck throttle which we know there is not a real throttle on a Stark.

It would be interesting to see what he would say happened there, strange crash, glad his ankle survived.

Same bs stuff the ama did to Honda back in the 80's where Honda was kicking hd's butt. The ama tried that crap with Indian which has been sweeping the top spots and has wiped hd of the map. hd has their own kiddy race now.

You might be thinking of Indoor Enduro of Champions race, where Walker won and Taddy went 2nd and Eddie 5th? It gathered all kinds of enduro champions (52 world titles) but was a one-off race, not part of Superenduro championship.

It may well have tilted the balance for FIM to decide restrictions for electrics, they haven't said what kind of data they had used to come up with 48 hp and the ridiculous minimum weight of 123 kg.
