Could a Top 10 pro beat you on a 15 yr old stock bike?

Monday morning bench racing brought up the question "if both bikes were stock how old of a bike would a Top 10 pro (in either class) have to be on before things were even close?"

One guess was Andrew Short on a bone stock 1993 CR250 could beat most local pros on a 2010 bike of their choice if the race was 20 minutes long.

For most mere mortals do you think a current AMA racer who regularly makes the main could beat you on a stock mid-90s mx bike? Or if you're a pretty good local racer would they have to be on 80s vintage iron?

Or has anyone "race" a fast guy when they were dinking around on, say a XR100 or a trail bike with a headlight?

I saw a video with Ivan Tedesco on a dual sport XR650L on a MX track and he looked pretty fast.

I dont know about an old bike but I do know that at the SE LL qualifyer Cooper web(on a 150) was running lap times within a second of the 450A guy's.
That goes to show how fast the top guys are going so I would have to say that you could put Dungey on an older 125 and he could still out run most local fast guy's.

I pretty sure I could smoke JS RD RV and any of those guys if they were on a 15 yr old Y-Zinger.

Which qualifier was that and what track was it?

It all depends what the condition and setup of each bike was.

It was at Lake Sugar tree. Dont hold me to it but I think Cooper went a 1.50 and they were going 1.48 and .49s. My son and his friends didnt beleive me so they were all timming him and there was about 4 or 5 guys standing there and they were shocked also.
We were comparing his times to Frank Laterie(SP?) and Nick Hayes. To be honest if someone told me this I wouldn't believe it but I saw it myself.

I watched Mark Barnett ride a 74 Elsinore 250 and he smoked his class, then went out and smoked the post vintage class, but their laptimes were slower than kids run on 80s. Barnett can still haul on a 450 though.

Codt Cooper pulled out his old CR125 and smoked everyone in a NZ National one year.. Scott NZ might eb able to confirm this as to how old the bike was, but it was against 250f..

on a 95 CR250? It wouldnt slow the pro down much. I honestly think a more reasonable question would be if the pro was on a bike from the 70s or 80s

How old would their bike have to be for me to beat a top ten pro? Probably 1900-1920.

A pro would have to be on this for me to have a chance.

Who am I kidding , they'd still beat my ass.

exactly. dont any of you guys remember the 95 CR250? it was a damned fast bike...

a 15 year old bike at this point only has a weak image in the minds of most moto enthusiasts because most 15 year old bikes are thrashed junk or basket cases in somebodys shed somewhere. A new, out of the crate 15 year old CR250 is a serious threat at any level once the terrible suspension setup is fixed

I figure if they're on a '71 SL100 and I get a 3 lap lead in a 10 lap race, I've got one hell of a chance.....I could'a been a contender !

I remember that video. Ivan on a XL650 smoking a guy on a 2009 CRF450. It was hilarious. Ivan was blowing the XL's horn behind the guy as he'd stick a wheel in on him!
Me? I wouldn't wanna race one of the top 10 year old riders on a 15 year old KX60!

Good point. I saw a local guy in Sweden that used to be top 10 here during the eighties. He kept one bike from that era (1986 YZ250) and that actually had the stock tires on still and was smoking EVERYONE on the track. It was odd watching how he played with fast local guy on his CRF450.

I'm guessing a 250 from mid eighties would would be enough to go fast.

I think you would have to go back to about 1981 to get a crappy enough bike....Although, a 1978 Maico 440 was pretty damn good. The 79' CR250 was also pretty good....the all Red one.
1974 for sure....I could take em. 250 silver Elsinore with the down pipe....yup. I'd be champ!

Watch some vids of how fast DeCoster, Howerton, Bell, etc. used to go, then think if you were on a Works bike now, trying to beat their lap times, most of us would be pretty humiliated I'm sure.

Anything from about 1987 until today would only slow a good rider down a couple of seconds a lap, as long as it was still in good shape.

I'd beat them as long as they were on a 15yr old 4-stroke.

Do you guys remember the article a few years ago where a Journo (don't remember who or what mag but it might have been Transworld) lined up against Ryno. They started out with both of them on 450's and Ryno kept dropping a size every race until the Journo beat him? Ryno ended up on a bicycle before he got beat because they didn't have a JR50 around for him to ride. He beat the Journalist on a RMZ450 an RM125 a DRZ125 and I think he even beat him on a DRZ110.

Lol @ 15 year old bike. A new bike from 1995 would be a good bike today as long as the bike was kept in good condition.
When Broc Glover was on YZ´s he had the option of to motors for sx, and he ditched the works motor because it made over 50hp and was too much to hold on to for an entire race.

Do you think MC´s 1995 CR was a bad bike? I think it would be way better than new 2 strokes from today. The YZ250 has pretty much the same engine it released in 1999 - that´s 11,5 years ago, and it is regarded as perhaps the best 250 bike even today!

It could be a clapped out 15 year old bike and they would still beat 99% of people riding.

I remember that, it was really surprising. I believe they did get down to a 110 with ryno still being the faster. Eye opening for sure. I believe the magazine was Dirt Rider
