MX34 vs AT82 front on sand MX track?

I know most say the MX34 is an improvement over the MX33 and while I kinda agree on hardpack I'm really struggling with it on deep soft sand. I'm only talking about the front as I'm very happy with the rear.

Wondering if anyone else is having the same issue and if anyone has tried the AT82 front on softer MX tracks?

That is interesting because the pattern looks highly soft terrain biased.

Most guys that I know run the MX3S not the 34 in sand.

Try the Pirelli MX32 soft.  I prefer it on all conditions over the MX33 and MX34.  The only Dunlop front I'll run is the MX3S.

Sounds like you need an MX12

Although none of the pro's ever seem to run them, even at super deep Euro sand tracks. I think sometimes a little 'float' in the front is helpful in sand, as you mostly steer with the rear and if there is a sand rut you don't want an aggressive tyre that constantly tries to climb out of it.

I raced with a at82 front this last weekend. I wasn't in sand, but it was soft/intermediate terrain with lots of tree roots. Tillamook state forest in the PNW. I really liked the front and I'd take it over a mx34 front any day. The 80/100-21 size seemed narrower on the at82 than the same size mx34. Not sure how the 90/100-21 would look next to the 80/100-21 MX34, might be closer or maybe a little fatter

I'm using the new AT82 on the front for moto and really like it. I rode a sandy track last weekend and it worked well, but it wasn't like Florida sand. I'm one of those oddballs that never liked the MX3S for some reason even though many love it.

I’m currently running the 90/100-21 AT82 and it’s been incredible in the sand. Nice bump in stability and comfort over the 80/100-21 without making the steering feel too heavy. Coming off an MX33, the AT82 is a big improvement.

Thanks for the replies, looks like the AT82 is definitely worth a try.

Agree.  Run MX32 Soft in all conditions in North east.  They don't last as long but work well.  Run MX14 in soft/sand and MX34 otherwise in rear

MX3S works great for me in the sand - I like it better than any dedicated sand tire I've tried.

I really like the Mx34 but where are yall even finding 3s? All I can find them on in janky websites. Are they still being made?

The AT82 front shares the same block layout as the MX3S. So if you like the 3S, then the 82 would be worth trying.

Also, what tire pressure are you running, typically for deep sand, you should be 14PSI+ especially on the MX34's

I tried the bridgestone x10 on a deep sand track this year and i really rate it. If you're not stuck on dunlop it might be worth a try

Been a long time since I've used a 3S as I'm pretty sure we don't get them anymore in Australian but I do remember liking them. I just remember side knobs breaking off very easily.

I run around 13.5-14psi as I've found that my happy spot. I like the 34 on anything with a harder base but I think because the knobs are noticeably shorter on the 34 it struggles to bite into the deeper stuff.

Everyone says high psi in the 34s but I played around with it and for me 13.5 in front and back was best. .5 one way or that other made a huge difference in feel to me so I encourage everyone to play around.

RMATV has them in stock. $10 cheaper than the AT82 front.

For sure! Also, the difference between readouts on most tire pressure gauges is something people forget to take into account. One gauge might be a pound off the next, especially when reading lower pressures.

What PSI are you all running the AT82 in sand? I rode pax this weekend (wet pax) with 12 psi and I was not a fan. I couldn’t tell if I had a ton of rebound and that made it squirrelly or if this tire doesn’t work.

Ive found that the AT82 front hates lower PSI because the tire carcass is softer. I ran into issues with the tire folding under heavy braking. So I had to run them at 14 PSI, once I did it went away and became great. I'm also 240 pounds so it might be different for a lighter rider.

I find that Bridgestones last a lot longer that the Dunlop equivalent, and I don’t notice any performance difference.

I personally thought the same. I run about 13.5-14 psi on the at82. It works good on hardpacked but any sandier or looser soil, even like Glen Helen, no good. I’ve been to pax quite a few times & I wouldn’t run it there. As the other guy said try a 13.5-14 psi. Most these new tires are 13.5 now.

I’ve always run Bridgestones. Shit, this is the first time I’ve tried something outside of the Bridgestone catalog in 25 years.

I run a hare scramble and off road series here in Florida and I’m getting back into moto. The moto setup is a lot different than the woods bike. I might go back to the tried and true M59 front.

AT82 is my new moto tire, hands down. I just bought an MX3S to try, but of the other major players (MX33, MX34, MX32 mid-soft, X31, etc.) the AT82 has been the standout for me. It works everywhere (very good in soft or sand-ish conditions) and has a lot of "bump comfort", if that makes sense. As someone else has already stated, it runs narrow and requires 14+ psi (I run 14.5 psi in all conditions). I was actually having a hard time finding confidence with the MX34 front in dry, soft dirt/sand the other day - but that particular tire has 20+ hours on it, so maybe it just needs replaced. FWIW, I run the Bridgestone X31 front on all my woods bikes as it works better in wet rocks and roots than the AT82. We are spoiled with lots of good tire options these days.

If you had to choose between the mx34 or at82 front to run all year, which would you choose? Son is on a 24 KX250X and he races NGPC/SRA. Thanks.

I have been running the MX34 front and just tried an AT82 front. I've got two days on it and the first day, I really liked it. The second day at a different track, where the conditions start out pretty sandy and get hardpacked by the afternoon I didn't care for it as much. It seemed to push. I run 13.5 psi.

Honestly Dunlops aren't worth the money compared to other brands.

Gotta pay for that rig at the races for the pros.

Im still really enjoying my 34 race spec tires. Having some time on them now I definitely feel its the improved version of the regular 34. I have been convinced to try an 82 set up tho and will eventually report my thoughts on those as well.
