In search of my next bike. Really want to pull the trigger on a YZ250/450F but as soon as I start looking at opinions and inherent problems it’s always transmission issues. People of all riding backgrounds from vet novice to pro dropping gears anywhere from 9 hours to 60 hours, multiple times even.
I know every bike has its issues but these are some seriously expensive ones. Can anyone give some happy stories of their YZ’s lasting 100+ hours w/o needing the transmission cracked?
Thanks!
I had 3 transmission failures on new yz250f 2021, first on 18h, second on 43 and third on 56... After that i am not buying yzfs again
Wow I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t believe Yamaha hasn’t stepped up and done something about it.
Local fast rider had his 2022 or maybe it was a 2023 yz250f gearbox let go at 5 hours. Yamaha fixed it free of charge I recall.
I have 90hrs on my 2023 no problems, Im not fast though
Wonder if it was still under warranty?
I haven’t heard Yamaha stepping up and repairing transmissions on slightly older outside of warranty bikes.
Glad yours is holding up! Seems like they fail for no certain reason, slow guys & fast guys alike.

I don't believe the 450 is having transmission issues, I know my FX has the 5 speed that's been around since the wr400f days. I've got 170 hard hours on mine with the original clutch, zero issues.
What warranty?
They have a 30 day warranty.
Interesting, was under the impression they had none.
I've owned 3 YZ 4 strokes with over 200 hours and no transmission issues.
I know one guy that had a transmission failure at <5 hours on a YZ250fx.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! Wish there was a clear reason for these failures, whether its how it's ridden or type of oil, etc.
Seems to just happen for no reason.
My YZ250 2 stroke had a broken gear with 7 hours of use.
Plenty of cases like mine in the yz250 2stroke community. Yamaha needs to do something.
Man I’m sorry to hear that! Yeah seem the 2t’s trans break at a higher frequency.
Maybe it has something to do with how they’re ridden, not saying you or 2 stroke guys are harder on them but the riding style is a little different than 4 strokes.
Just playing detective and crime solving.
Its my first time ever with transmission problems……… always riding Red, zero issues with Honda’s gearboxes.
Indeed is an issue if you are looking for a new bike.
Good luck with your search.
How do you shift? Speed shift? Shift with no clutch? Throttle WFO?
What kind of oil do you use. There are additives in MC oils specifically for transmission use.
Usually I speed shift.
I was using Honda Gearbox oil when gear broke.
Now I m using Redline lightweight shockproof gear oil as TMR recommended me.
That was my next question, what’s everyone’s recommendations for trans/gear oil? Looks like I might be picking up a 23 Yz250F.
Yamalube 1040 works well.

If you are considering a 450 beware of the connecting rods breaking as well. Takes out the entire engine. I had a friend have it happen on a 2022 at 22 hours and I think the new bikes are even more of a problem.
He literally typed "yz250f" two comments above.
I prefer running synthetic oil.

My YZ 250's 3rd gear broke at 27 hs. The gear dogs were perfect. Now I have 66 hours on it and my gearbox is fine, I suspect this was a faulty material scenario

Really? I have been waiting since the '70's.
Same old, same old. Great engines and weak trannys.
I've had nothing but good luck. My 09 YZ250 started chewing up dogs around 200 hrs. Have a 21 YZ250f with 100 hrs and no problems.
You never know with these bikes though. If this industry could somehow implement aerospace level quality control these bikes would cost 100k$ instead of 10.
Exactly. Ya never know what yer gonna get with manufactures stating they’re going to 50% recycled metals.
Just put a new 3rd gear in a 2023 YZ85LW, tooth broke off.
I raced Yamahas from 99-2008. I really liked the Yz”s, but around 06 I started having serious reliability issues with the transmissions, could not make it through a season without totally rebuilding the bottom ends due to transmission failures. Same tracks, same riding styles, same maintenance schedules…..several of my riding buddies were experiencing the same thing. I moved on back to Hondas as they had their 450”s working good at that point. What was weird, is my 99,2000 & 2001 Yz 250”s were great, no gearbox issues and likley more time on them when I sold them…
I didn't seek out KTMs because my Yamahas were poor quality, but I am blown away by the Pankl parts in the KTM. Namely the clutch basket and gears from casual observation in handling them personally.
They really are next level.
But the KTM forks ... oy!
There's always give-and-take.
