If they were indeed told not to jump it, then the penalty is fair.

But the jump was spectacular, and I bet it makes highlight reels.

It was amazing to see it, but if I’d witnessed a kid under 12 come up short on live TV and possibly ruin the rest of his life Id have questioned the organizers for letting it happen.

They probably never imagined 65 riders would do it, when they saw they did it, they told them not to. The kid did it, he got a penalty for not following the rules

It’s only a spectacle until some young kid ends up in hospital

They were jumping some big stuff last year. 1st kid cases a triple.

Was it this event last year that some kid cased a jump and it looked like he wouldn’t walk away?

Agreed - if they were told not to jump it, then don’t jump it. Seems pretty clear..

But just your typical kid these days, they don’t listen…if they were told not to jump it, then it’s a good life lesson of consequences.

I think only the top 4 kids jumped the big double beside the starting gate where they came out of the outdoor/back section of the track back into the main part of the stadium.  Why didn’t they tell them not to jump that one too?

Canyon Richards was stretchered out at Chicagoland last year after he cased the finish line jump but he ended up being okay. He went on to podium a GNCC the next day if I remember correctly!

Wey’s was gnarly too

If they use the footage for the broadcast at anytime … then the penalty is BS! But if they were told not to do it then I guess fair enough… that being said there is no such thing as bad publicity and he will be fine with current and future sponsors i’m sure!

Well, I suppose they should DQ Deegan then for jumping the quad in the rhythm section that nobody else could do…

Fine him 4 Capri suns or whatever the current juice box is.

If I was that kid's dad, I'm getting a picture of him hucking the jump blown up and framed, and having a trophy made that says "disqualified for being too rad"

I think it's time to scrap these mini races at SMX.  You invitethe best tlthe sport has to offer and then handcuff their abilities ? Time to move on.

If this was a rule set out before the race they should have the Red Cross Flags out to not jump to remind the kids do not jump they're in a battle and going off instinct!

another reason to race Off-Road/\Local Hare Scrambles. This is beyond bullshit. Even if they were told, if that was my kid, I'm telling him to send it little homie!

So how many you guys saying the penalty is bullshit are also the ones saying tracks are too fast/jumps too large,  450's are too fast, local tracks all need to be safer, and MX Sports needs flaggers that travel the country.....but now complaining a kid was penalized for jumping something they were told not to?

Somebody already posted about last year's super mini races in Chicago and how this place lit them up for letting Superminis race on a track with those jumps?  Which side of the fence are you on?

If you don't want the 65s jumping big doubles, then don't build the track like that. Top-tier racers are going to go fast, and that means doubling for some of them.

If I were Carter Gray, I'd say, "Keep your trophy. I'm going to go find a triple to jump."

So the elite pros are doing the same jumps as 5years olds on 65’s.  So entertaining

If you dont want them hitting the jumps, dont put them on the track.

If they told him you’ll be DQd if you jump it and he went out there and did it anyways while leading…then I’m already a big fan!

This is a good idea to remind them BUT still a form of censorship.  Surely it’s not their fault they are better than others.

Yeah Canyon Richard’s one was the one I meant. Made me feel a bit sick, it’s a kid. We don’t need kids stretchered off for riding too crazy on adult tracks. To me, telling them they can ride the adult track but must not double the finish line is fair.

Before the race they were told not to jump it. The kid he was battling with that got second was also doing it in qualifying. If I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure Carter made the pass for the lead by jumping it so it only makes sense to dock him if the rules were to not  jump it.

wtf is wrong with all you yoyos bitching about the penalty?

they were told not to jump it.

they jumped it. they were penalized.

maybe the people in charge did not want an 11 year old kid wadding up on a big double that would not be forgiving if they did not make it,

in addition they probably wanted to avoid other riders being pressured to do it.

looks like sound reasoning to me.

again, they were told not to do it.

of course those two will probably sign a merchandise deal and start a podcast talking about how stupid rules are and get a million followers.

Seems like the only reasonable take in this thread so far.  They were 11/12 years old.  Nobody wants to see one of those kids wad up on national TV.  Kids that jumped it after being told not to should have been black flagged during the race.  If they were given this direction before they race, no one would have done it.

This reminds me of a story @Patrick Evans  put on his instagram

He was doing one of the ktm 50 supercross races and was doubling the triple, and the AMA told him not to. Bubba came up to him and basically said who cares, jump it anyways

jumping it and gettin the DQ was worth it, some of you being outraged over him being Dq'd are literally the same people that would be outraged if a kid got hurt there doing it.

my pops woulda told me if the opportunity presented itself and i wanted to jump it, go ahead and do it. winning the race and gettin 3rd overall because of it, woulda been worth it. gettin hurt on it woulda been my choice and he would take responsibility for it. i have a feeling they probably had the same conversation about it.

Some 35ish years ago, we were told not to jump the finish on 60's at an arenacross in Ohio.  Greg Rand jumped it every lap.  I don't think he was penalized.
