Was going to the track but tracks closed due to rain last night. Figured I might as well post on this.
Just curious what others are doing to keep bikes from getting stolen.
I mainly ride middle of the week, local to me day trips. Which is Ultimate MX 20 min away in Alvin, Tx and 3 Palms in Conroe, Tx. 3 Palms requires a trip through Houston to get there. Best not to stop to pee driving through parts of Houston anymore LOL.
I stay close to home for the most part but other tracks in the state I’d like to ride like Spoaks MX but a little far for a day trip. Would require hotel stay and very few hotels where you can get a bike in the room in this day and time.
I have some cable locks I use from time to time on my receiver hitch carrier or my open trailer. Good enough to look out the window of fast foot and eat a Hamburger etc. I have everything insured and air tags.
My next level of theft protection would be a logging chain and heavy duty lock from bike frame to trailer. Still nothing a good cordless grinder with a carbide wheel can’t take care of.
I’m thinking an enclosed trailer with heavy duty locks/with lock enclosures. Also an alarm system on doors wouldn’t be a bad idea. I put a car alarm on one of my bass boats years ago, switch on every lid. With a screaming horn and flashing lights, worked pretty good. Had more than one person walk up and see that led flashing on the dash and walk away. Figured I could do the same with an enclosed trailer.
Comments please, Thanks Billy
I have theft insurance on my bike.
I drive back & forth from NY to Florida every year in my van. I used to stop either way to get some shut eye, but in the last 6-7 years the only time I stop is for gas & to take a piss. The stops along 95 are so sketch now, sometimes I take the long way to Rt 81 to avoid 95 all together…when I did stop for a few hrs I made sure My bikes were chained up inside the van….I don’t trust anyone or any area.
Seems more applicable here to figure out ideas how to prevent the thefts in the first place.
As we’ve seen with auto insurance, relying on insurance is a short sighted measure to deal with increasing thefts. Eventually your rates will go up or even the option of being able to get insurance at all just goes away since insurers aren’t in the business to lose money.
I have disk locks that I use

Enclosed trailer with bikes locked up inside is about as good as you are going to get, get your room and then move your truck to as close to your room as you can.
For goodness sakes don't have any moto stickers on your trailer so dumb.
Buy some insurance, stop to take a piss. You make it sound like we live in a real life Purge/Mad Max movie or something. I stop all the time throughout the city with a bike in the back. I eat, I pee, I buy drinks and snacks.
When I traveled to Millville from TX, I got first floor of a nice hotel. The place had underground private parking, but I still rolled my bike into the hotel room every night. We both slept better LoL!!
I have never done it but im consider to take a wheel of the bike and put it in the car or take the wheel to the hotel. if im sleeping in a bad area.
This always pull the bikes into! the hotel room! Or get a toy trailer and sleep in the trailer with the bikes!
We need some form of Trunk Monkey....
I've had a 2 yr old truck I bought new and a bike stolen. Separate incidents, but my truck now has 2 separate tracking devices. My bikes are always in the room with me if I travel and get a hotel(s). No other way
Fair point.
I do carry a 9mm theft prevention device.
I keep a cable lock on the bike in the back of the pickup in case I need to go into a store or something. Staying in a hotel I would bring the bike in or back up to the room door depending on the situation.
I've had a bike stolen from my house one time when I wasn't home, it sucks but if someone really wants it there's always a way they can take it.
What if it's 2 guys? They could just carry your bike over to their truck.
Most places you travel during the day is not a big deal. I stop at the Neighborhood Walmart on FM 518 in League City and run in with my bike on my trailer, not a big deal. Having to stop in places you don’t want to, like middle ways down the Hardy Toll road in Houston. It’s after darks hotels etc where it’s best to be careful. I fished Bass Tournaments for years. We had professional thieves follow the circuits to steal electronics and gear. Cameras and alarm systems slowed that way down.
Insurance is cheap and I’m insured to the gills but insurance isn’t a guarantee to break even.
My brother in laws family owns a storage facility off Telephone Road in Houston, not the best part of town. I keep one of my utility trailer there for cheap. They have a lock enclosure on the gate lock and same around door locks to storage units. Lock enclosures seem to help.
I miss the days of good commercials
If staying at a hotel, i leave the bikes in my enclosed trailer at the track. But, Ive had to take the trailer to a couple sketchy East Texas hotels and didnt have a problem.
In my opinion its about avoiding being targeted rather than prevention. Some random tweeker walking by wont get through most locks and alarms. But the pros that payoff their cousin who works the front desk are going to run through your shit so fast and efficiently you wont believe it. Doesn't matter if its right outside your room. They're amazing. A
You gotta hope night clerk Nancy points the boys toward that shiny F350 that the outta town work crew rolled up in.
....bring the bike into the Hotel room like we did back in the 80's....
Pit Row
No one is breaking into that one.
The inside job at hotels is no joke. A few years back a buddy of mine that owned a truck inspection company checked into a hotel in Laredo, Tx. Maid was finishing up cleaning the room as he brought his bag in. He didn’t think to much about but maid saw him put is pistol on the night stand. Middle of the night he wakes up as some guy is running out the door with his wallet and pistol. Never heard the guy open the door, figures he had a key. Figured the maid was in on it.
I’m actually planning to go ride a few tracks out of state this year so I’m curious on the bike in the hotel trick. OH to TN so obviously I’ll be staying over night. Those of you that have done it, do you mention it ahead of time and request a ground level room or just risk it all ? Lol
I found out the hard way how easy it is for a cable lock to get cut.
A few weeks ago camping and during the night somebody cut the cable lock and stole my Honda generator. I never heard a peep.
Even though I use them. I always figured those cable locks could be cut easy with bolt cutters. It’s just cable. The cable locks are only good enough if that,
to run in the store and get ice, cokes beer etc.
I probably won’t cut up one of my good chains I use with my tractor. Scrounge up some 3/8 or larger logging chain. Then slip inside a piece of clear tubing and use a good lock. Still can be cut but might make me feel better lol.
When riding at Cooperland in the 90s we would lay down newspaper and sleep with our bikes at cheap motels
Ask for an ADA accessible hotel room, wide doorways and easy access to get bike inside.
This is what I do just in my garage and I have driveway cam, german shepherd and guns handy.
Put the heavy duty U-lock thru your back sprocket.
Put the disc lock thru front sprocket with motion sensor loud alarm. Good cable lock thru frame tied to something immobile. Hopefully they will be like “ ah fuck it this is a pain in the ass”. Sounds extreme but honestly takes me less than 2 minutes to set that up.
Haven’t lost one……yet
Bring your friends, Smith and Wesson.
Step 1 don’t stay the night in Moreno Valley.
I use disc locks with motion sensor alarms. When i had an open trailer i would also chain the bikes to the trailer. The alarms are pretty sensitive and as soon as the bike moves they go off. Now I use a hitch lock to lock the trailer to the truck plus disc locks on the bikes inside the trailer
If you're camped at the track, it's less of an issue, but bring a 30 foot cable with looped ends and a lock (even a cheap lock).
Fish the cable through each wheel and back through each frame on your bikes, then through the frame, hitch or wheel on your RV, truck or van. Pull your bikes close enough together to lower your EZ-Up down on top of them and include it in the cable loop before you lock it all up. I like to jam my pressure washer in there amongst everything.
If you're sleeping in your RV, van or camper, the amount of racket a thief will have to make to get the EZ up out of the way just to get to the bikes will be enough to wake you.
Also at the track, you can use the cheapo solar motion-sensing walkway lights from Home Depot.
Keep a set of four or six in your rig.
If you're staying in a hotel, you really need a burly cable lock that ties into your van or enclosed trailer.
No way you should leave bikes in the back of your truck or on a three-rail trailer overnight.
