Once you put a value on your own workmanship (hours), plus the shop supplies, the packing, and the paint, you just rebuilt that silencer alone for more than a complete modern exhaust. That's dedication! - or dementiaUnsure

Good point, I agree. I promise you that you don't want to know how dedicated the damned fools were that did the head.

Sweet looking tanks. Thank you Joe for your hard work.
My 78 rm 250 isn't worthy of a tank like that. I bought the bike off a friends Dad, he was the orignal owner. It had been sitting in an old building behind his house unridden since 1980. The sun had done it's usual damage to the plastic and rubber parts but aside from a lot of tarnish and rust it was in great shape.
Now after seeing those tanks I am going to have to polish up the rest of it and make some trick parts of my own. Like others have said ,you didn't just paint some old gas tanks you recreated a piece of history.

Back in the day we used the RM250 tank on the RM125 for the Nationals and used the 125 tank on the 250's for Supercross and night races.
Some of the pics I find of Richter's bike, it appears to have the 250/370 tank on it. Sticking with the 125 tank on this one for now.

Thanks for the compliments on the Zook parts. Spent a little time this weekend fitting a few things together and trying to figure out what all is missing. Since I started this with a pile of parts and not an actual bike there are a lot of little things to chase down. Not to mention all the aftermarket and custom built stuff and the few oddball pieces.

Starting to look like a bike. Have to make some brackets to mount the radiator on the front of the triple clamps next and route the coolant lines. I went through the Simon's forks and freshened them up while I had someone else rebuild the Fox Air Shox on the rear. Laydown position Thor/Fox swingarm. Solid black seat cover, no logos. Opaque side panels from DC Plastics. Vintage Iron rear fender and a Petty MX replica front.

Radiator isn't in place yet but the JT Kable Keep is bolted the the front of the upper triple clamp.

Coolant temp guage mounts to the bar mounts.

TyDogs handiwork on top of a bare bead blasted cylinder. Chuck Tannlund provided me with porting specs and some of their carb info. They tried a lot of different things back then. I went through the complete engine, powdercoated the cases, new crankshaft assy., seals, bearings and gaskets. Next up is fitting the Fox pipe and cleaning it up. Threw on a PVL ignition so I know it will always run when I need it to! I do plan on it being ridden from time to time.

Joe, you need an NOS Petty fender for that?

I'm not sure if that's a rhetorical question or not.

KT, man you do awesome work! I need some of that; hope that 370 comes out nice. I hear you about the slush fund; that's the only reason the pants went to sale.

What was the advantage back then to having a water cooled head? Beyond cooling, Did it offer a substantial advantage over the air cooled heads, DG and Webco etc? I was still riding trail 70's then and I remember seeing ads for them I just didn't know if they worked. I remember Dirt Bike magazine made a RM 80 with a water cooled head around 1980-81 it was like the ultimate want.

Your bike is looking sweet.

A 125 would get hot enough to slow down like a slug in a bowl of salt, not to mention piston eating capabilities of the bikes back then. Air filters back then had better dirt sucking power than half of todays top vacuums. Everything has come along way.

Joe, where does one find replica preston petty fenders?

And an even more difficult question for FTE....where does one find an NOS preston petty fender? Smile

Mooch, Vintage Iron has the yellow replicas and other colors. VMX racing also has red and white.

I've had an NOS yellow stashed for a long time (as well as a red, but that goes on my Honda). Someone also has been selling them on Ebay; ran a couple auctions in sequences (one ended yesterday), so maybe more will come up.

Thanks for the insight on that FTE.

I have a pretty decent 81 YZ250 that has a PP front fender that was initially some shade of yellow with a strong tinge of grayishness. After a good bit of sanding and plastic renew, it looks ok but a shiny replica would look a lot better. I'll check ebay out for an NOS version...though I cringe at thinking what that would go for!

Oh, awesome job with that Zuke Joe. Why'd you do up so many tanks? Selling some of them?

WOW Newmann, amazing. That is my plan for my 370 tank. Although no way its going to look like yours. Next time you do 5 more, want to do a 6th? Cash waiting.

A little more progress. Thanks to FTE, I now have an authentic NOS Preston Petty MX Tony D front fender on it. Shame that Fox had cut a chunk off the rear of theirs to aid cooling to the cylinder and head, now I have to go and cut this one so it will be "correct"! But I even have a Champion spark plug in the damn thing. At some point in the year they had the bike stickered up with Bosch decals, but sticking with the Champions here. The radiator is done now, just need to paint it and get it mounted. Waiting on some small parts from Suzuki and I should be able to wrap it up. Will be on display at the Houston SX this weekend unfinished but there nonetheless.

You did an outstanding job on this, thanks for sharing. I helped a friend of my Dad's restore old Cushmans and know what kind of love it takes to put that much into restoration projects.

I think this is one of the best threads ever on here!

Newman you are the Picasso of old bikes. GREAT WORK!

I take it you are retired, there is no way I could find time or patience to do that working here at the salt mine.... I won't go into the $$ figure.
