Tomac is a mystery isn't he? Classic sports legend imo. Who knows

Yeah its a fair point about his family and the effort to pursue it. But its really more of an extended summer type of thing with a few extra races spring/fall. In my opinion, not that much more of an effort to pursue than SX/MX/SMX combined. If anything, probably less of a stress to do MXGP without considering the relocation to belgium (if that would even be needed).

Villopoto was in 4th place, 27 markers back in the standings when he was hurt.

Yamaha and triumph are both monster affiliated over there? Kawi might even take him back if he wanted to race. Cairoli stayed around until mid 30's and was competitive until the last season. On the contrary, i think MXGP would almost be more suitable for an older rider than AMA. More natural obstacles and arguably less race intensity

All the teams are full of riders, and all the teams have mx2 riders waiting for a GP ride.

they will not put those riders aside because of a American rider that have passed his prime want to race.

Remember that a Tomac in prime would have a REALLY hard time to brake it in to the top 3 at a full mxgp season.

And Cairoli was at his prime in his early 30’s, but Tomac ain’t…

I don't think the narrative that RV got smoked in Europe is true at all. He was disinterested for sure, didn't want to be there, but he still overalled a race in the three/four he competed in. By overalled I mean he beat the other riders in the event, hardly a definition of doing poorly.

Once again, we are talking about a "2015" RV. Not the same competitor who was dominant the years before...

And it's crazy to think the "Ghost of RV" with one foot out, won his 2nd event in the GP's ever. I don't subscribe to the narrative that he wasn't going to be in the running. But what ifs are dumb, it didn't happen and that's all.

I was rooting for Cairoli heavily that year and it didn't happen for him either.

This. 2013 mx version of RV would have been a different story

Haha, funny how selective memories work. Desalle came from behind and passed RV just before he crashed. Was there that day and saw RVs last race, where he clearly hadn't the speed for a top 5 in Trentino.

please don't hold me accountable for my failed memory. we have legal pot in my country.

1. he won 1/3 of the rounds he finished

2. he was ahead of Febvre at the time he exited the championship

3. Febvre was only about cooper webb's speed at glen helen. pretty damn sure RV had more speed than cooper webb

considering those three items, by no means "disrespectful" to think he was in the runnning. however what ifs and coulda shoulda doesn't vibe with the sport of MX at all

I don't think Tomac wants to race MXGP, but I wouldn't rule him out of racing an MXGP,  kinda like Cairoli did in ProMotocross in '22 or Chad Reed In 2016, when he raced the British and Italian GPs. Full time racing MXGP would require him to move to Europe or fly to the other side of the pond every two weeks, that's a big hurdle.

The only top americans who have showed Real intentions to race MXGP is Anderson on the Gypsy Tales Podcast, and even himself said that he's a contract away from retirement, so maybe that last contract, if he's willing to, could be a MXGP deal.

Tomac is an all timer, a true legend of motocross worldwide, and I'm pretty sure that if he wanted, he could race MXGP with a Factory Team, only thing he needs is a phone call from his manager to a top MXGP team, and they would write a contract for him in a few minutes, and Yamaha, Monster and AStars (Plus other sponsors) would support him 100% when he retires or if he decides to race a few MXGP, Oh and don't forget, he race win ratio in MXGP is still 100%, 4 moto stars, 4 moto wins.

Except for when he rode US GP in 2017, he went 1-3 for 2nd overall.

It's definitely going that direction with the RV comparisons.

The thread was supposed to be pure speculation if ET would give it a go, since he just said a GP race was a "bucket list" over the weekend.

I'm not sure about you, but if I say something is on my "bucket list," I'm more or less planning on doing that thing eventually.

Then again there are people who want to go skydiving and never actually do it.

It would be cool if he was in his prime, but at this stage of his career I can’t see it. He’d need at least one season just to get used to the tracks, then add in all of the international travel and it seems super unlikely. He’d get better results in the US if he wants to race outdoors again

3/21/2024 9:03am

He was one of the best racers ever, but he IS a dirt bike rider, and at some point age and reality catches up forcing retirement. Please, just let it go!

He's 31 this year. He still has 2 more seasons if he wants it. At 34/35, point taken and its time to move on.

Dude doesn't even like to leave Colorado unless he has to....0% chance he's doing a season in the GPs and living in Europe.

I'd wager any amount of money on it.

I love how people shit on RV in MXGP when he went 1-1 at his 2nd race

There is a long list of people that I would pick to do an MXGP season before Tomac lol

As disinterested in MXGP that RV was, the other riders were as disinterested in the GP that RV won (was it Thailand??)

it was said that the usual suspects were furious about fuel quality making their bikes run like shit and lack of medical services, therefore were not going to take any risks.

seemingly RV went for it and won..

Barcia infinitely more likely than Tomac. Which is 0.1% chance.

The whole RV 2015 performance argument is hardly even tangential to a Tomac 2025 potential performance. He would have no Prado to deal with. He's looking at Febvre, Herlings, and Gajser. The only one of the three who probably has a clear speed advantage would be Herlings, who is probably also less consistent.

I would put Tomac's title chances incredibly high. Shoot me.

You're wrong about Gajser.

You're wrong about Gajser.

I can see Gajser and Febvre having a speed advantage on very hard pack (central european) tracks. Czech, France, Italy tracks. Beyond that, I think these three are pretty evenly matched.

I think in 2022 this would be true, but not anymore. Also Tomac has never ridden any of those tracks, it would take a year to adjust. Look at most GP guys' first year in America. It's usually an adjustment year

Yes there is quite a bit of muscle memory that the euros would have that Eli wouldn't have. But they have a full qualifying day in MXGP, so that would true that up a bit.

To your other point, is Tomac really any worse this season than he was in 2022 or is Jett just better? Jett ran down everyone in the quali at mxon last fall handedly. If you compare Tomac to Sexton instead of Jett, he seems to be about the same in 2024 as 2022. These are very subjective comparisons since Jett is involved.
