And yet, as far as marketing goes, the Bukk Cake was really an attractive name.

These things were way too expensive. The offroad models were the same price as a Stark, and who's gonna buy this over a Varg?

Just came back from Asia and their electric bikes are already so much better than what Cake is offering. The most common option is bikes that are powered with batteries that you swap out of these vending machine phone app kiosks. Food delivery guy is on the electric bike:

Battery vending machine

Motorcycle market is massive, to say the least. Typical large parking lot in a small/midsize city:

it's a slick design with a unique purpose and I wish I had one. but here are others like the Surron Bee, which I also want. then again never ridden either so hard to say what they're like. sad news for what looked to me like a very cool, design-centric company. I've pitched the CEO to let me lead recruiting for them for years, but alas.

That's the future of MX/SX with electric.    Boring AF.....

Surely you've heard of mountain bikes? Ever watch any gnarly downhill races? Shit's crazy. Zero engine sound. Nobody rides for sound, or else we wouldn't ride. We'd just put some earphones in and listen to the sounds. Wait.....you may have given me a business idea....

What does mountain biking have to do with MX/SX racing?        Imagine a stadium filled with 65000 people watching  e-racing  like the video above.   What a freaking snoooze-fest.

....and as for riders not caring about sound.  That's a bunch of hoeey.   I can't imagine why the aftermarket exhaust market for dirt and street is massive. Laughing

Speaking from personal experience, I rode a Zero street bike several years back.      Something was just missing without the exhaust note....not at all the same experience.     Like sex with a condom.

Even if you don't classify step-throughs as motorcycles for some weird reason, there's many dozens of non step through in that picture.

Now, it was not dirtbikes, but they were kind of high profile hipster bikes. Ugly AF and expensive.

Also, sound is very much part of the visceral experience. It’s as important as, if not more important than, the visual when it come to studio/content production. You will sit through a poorly lit podcast but not one with shitty sound. .

The popularity of ASMR content is a reflection of this as well.

Electric bikes are like sex with a condom.

Doesn’t mean they aren’t useful to some people some of the time.

I’m not in the market though. I’m here to feel.

Ps. Check out a video on foley artists…pretty cool stuff.

That's funny because it is different of course, and some riders can be annoyed by the lack of (or different) noise, for sure.

Though when you write "I'm here to feel", well, if that's really your concern, you should try one! Talking about the Varg, most riders report that, with such a clean power delivery and instant connection to the throttle, and obviously without the engine pulsing and vibrating, they feel so much more what the chassis, suspensions and tires are doing.

There are many reasons not to like electric bikes (including missing aforementioned pulses and vibrations), and actually no one needs a reason not to like anything, it doesn't have to be rational, but lack of feel is not it.

So many riders say that's the most fun they've ever had, not sure that's what people say about having sex with a condom Tongue

With hindsight, Cake funder identified 3 points leading to their unfortunate demise. Here I'm trying to see if Stark is susceptible to fall in the same traps.

First he says that he knew for the company to turn profits they would have to sell 7 500 to 10 000 bikes a year, numbers that they have never achieved over 6 years of production. Of course I don't know how such numbers could relate to Stark financial situation since these informations tend to be highly confidential, but such sales numbers are already in view for them in their first production year. Also Cake had 2 or 3 factories to run.

Another thing he found out is that direct to customer is not viable for expensive bikes that people obviously want to see and try before they commit to buy. Cake took 3 years to open 8 dealerships, Stark already has over 270 dealerships.

Finally he says that a partnership with a bigger company could have saved them, sharing tools to help them expand production, distribution network, offer financing etc... Eicher motors ($1.9 billion annual revenue) bought 10% of Stark Future for 50 million euros so this should be covered as well.

If you're waiting for Stark Future demise, make yourself comfortable in that sofa, you could be in for a long wait. And don't forget your turtleneck, winter chills may come and go quite a few times.

When I said feel, I want to be moved. I do not mean physically, I mean emotionally. Sound is core to that. Music for the dance.

Maybe a better metaphor would be like sex while wearing Bose sound proof headphones that are playing an out of tune instrument.

Motorcycles have 3 reasons to exist

look good

go good

sound good

Any 2 out of 3 is enough.

Nobody is riding an electric bike through town and looking at their reflection in the window, its basically a motorized man bun.

And they dont make a noise.

And while they may 'go' they dont 'go' for long.

0/3

As an aside a good mate of mine did some testing for an EV manufacturer and couldnt get to where he rode and back on a single charge.

Back when i rode on the roads, our 'rideout' to the coast was a 6am run to the coast , 101 miles, there in an hour , an hour for breakfast , and 2 hours back.

I know these bikes are glorified delivery bikes, pretty much , but at $10k , i wanna be getting laid when i rock up on one, and you really arent.

Or maybe more like if you were used to having sex while blasting your stereo at full volume and then suddenly you turn this thing off: you can now remove your hear plugs, better hear your partner humming and discover new and awkward noises resulting from your motions, like say, chain slapping Laughing
