The sport feels noticeably different this year

Maybe if stick and ball sports started pushing porn sites and energy drinks to kids it would grow as fast as moto is!!!

They promote alcohol and gambling instead 😉

Supercross cringey? Uh… ok. Remember how badass Brett Michaels “Get your ride on” intro song was? Totally not super hard to watch or cringey.

Another Aussie with no sense of patriotism. Our military and flag is important to us mate, and should be to you too... you'd be speaking f-ing Japanese right now if it wasn't for our military saving your asses. The military appreciation round is awesome and honestly the sport could do more to show appreciation to our warfighters.

I’m sure this post will convince him

Wasn't trying to, I'm starting to think these Aussies are a bunch of woke, unpatriotic, a-holes. Or is it just all the Aussie a-holes on Vital?

I think what you mean is objective, aware, conscious and not a product and victim of the military industrial promotion and corruption machine as you seem to be...

As soon as you say 'woke' it becomes so clear how intellectually vapid you are. Woke is so obviously a catch all nothing used to deride nothing and everything and someone that is more aware of reality than you, I guess it's challenging, yet you lack the intelligence to back up your positions and just throw out buzz words like a politician looking to get elected by a bunch of 10 year olds.

Apologies if big word trigger Johny Utah's inferiority complex like his precious beautiful incorruptible military industrial complex.

Have a good day mate, and chuck some lamb in a cast iron pan, because we don't call them shrimps and we don't put them a barby.

BLM & stick & ball sports bs not standing for the flag turned a lot of people off. NFL nobody watches it hardly anymore. NBA is soo boring. Baseball is Really good tho.  The increase of content is just people that don’t want to work for a Living.  It only draws the Real stupid fan that don’t even ride.  The 1st 3 Nationals only hv 20 % of the race spectators of the late 90,s.  Clay oval stock car racing has more new fans than Mx by a lot.  40 900 hp cars drifting , rubbing,  10 bucks to get in. A little track in Fonda, Ny. Rt on the Tomahawk River Had extended bleachers the place was packed with everyone on there feet. More spectators than both Cal. Nationals. Drivers r Super cool & not stuck up like the spoiled baby riders.

There were a few BLM butt patches during the 2020 SX season and nobody said shit. Literally everything you said in your post is wrong.

Not all of it is wrong, NBA is boring, heck they had to resort to an inseason playoff to try and create excitement. My opinion is the average consumer is over athletes making mega millions and complaining about their jobs, NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA and LIV, oh now college football. Used to be a total any sport fan. Now NFL, and  2 wheel racing are about all i watch, too busy living life vice watching others live theirs.

Agree with OP. It feels like the sport is getting bigger and more professional every year. I think the SMX series and the cooperation between SX and outdoors has accelerated it. I like where we are at and the direction of the sport. More money going to the riders, more brands entering the sport, more races in different parts of the country, less cringey moments/branding.

I love the diversity of nationalities racing here. We have racers coming from all over the world to race our series. Jo, the Lawrences, Prado, Ferrandis, Vialle, Ken, Tanti (sp?), Freddie, Enzo, etc… This is definitely attracting new fans. There was a line of Japanese fans (not industry personnel) waiting in line just to take a picture of Jo’s Honda. Tons of people walking around the pits speaking different languages.

Guess for the pros yes, but for us regular guys not so sure, expensive, electronics make working on bike harder, tracks closing, longer drives etc....what are motorcycles sales at, i think that is a better measure of the sports health, than tv viewers, unless you think the sport is only for professionals?

A lot of local drag tracks seem to be closing, Atco and Etown come to mind, but I know there are a bunch of others as well. I don’t follow drag racing, but it feels to me the days of tuning your mustang in your own garage are kind of over? But I get it that professional drag racing is a show and a different deal.

There are tons of classes for a garage built car, more than ever actually. With the huge dumps in EFI and turbo tech big power is easier than ever. Heads up racing has not been for the faint of wallet since the 1960s. The amount of big money bracket stuff is staggering.

The strips that are going away is kind of inevitable... Englishtown is worth more money as a parking lot than it is as a drag strip. The strips that thrive are usually just off the beaten path... Away from high property values.

Agree with some of what you said. My post was mainly directed at the professional side of the sport. But I do agree it is harder for the average Joe, myself included, to pay for everything this hobby entails at the moment.

I think having Lawrence and Deegan is going to provide a major push for the sport. Both are young and seem cool/fun, the sport was booming the last time we had a champion that fit the "guys want to be him, girls want to be with him" mold, and that was MC. Since MC, we haven't had a champion with a ton of personality, just dudes that went fast on their motorcycles and thanked their sponsors.

He's a highly decorated Gravy Seal, you better put some respect on profeshenal125's name.

Motocross is bigger than America and the weird flag shit and weird military industrial complex advertising round is weird, the things you seem to think are really important are the cringiest shit out there... But ok...

We love the cool shit - I love that all the worlds flags are flown above the gates - the retro, cancer and st Judes rounds, the reduction in the overly sexualisation of the Monster Girls (that shit was cringy in 2010)

Moving from a overly sexualised bro marketting to corporate racing marketting is a large part of the reason.

I think your understanding of “Military Appreciation” is way off.

This reminded me that on I believe it was matthes podcast they said starting this year they now have an sx broadcast in spanish. Thats a huge deal and shoud bring in a lot more ppl too. They wouldnt be doing it if there werent ppl out there, so theres def a market.

SX/MX has a social media presence like no other sport, this is because other sports have restrictions and limits due to their media rights deals.  The NFL and TV were a perfect fit, just as social media and MX are a perfect fit now.   I think it will continue to grow, though not everyone will like it.

Well, for what its worth...that graph doesn't necessarily show that a ton of people watch football...just that more people watch it than any other television broadcasts...

Though I disagree with Profeshenal, in that I think the NFL and NBA are plenty popular...they aren't for me, I don't watch either of them, but I know a lot of people still watch them, stadiums are full...so I think they are doing okay.

On board with this.  Was at a family function last year and asked my wife if she remembered to record the MX race.  She isn't a diehard but keeps up with it enough, to know who's who.  Just so happened my nephews 14-year-old daughter overheard us and said she was recording it too.  Did the tilted-head squint-eye and said really?  She could rattle off Lawrence Bro's and Deegan facts but couldn't tell you if Tomac or Craig were there to race or park cars for the other riders.

The responses in this thread feel like they prove the sports reaching a lot more people now. 20 years ago we could pretty much be certain of the similar mindsets and personalities of other moto guys. In this thread today you guys are all over the spectrum.

“You’d be speaking Japanese now if it wasn’t for them” is the worst example you could ever use. My dad said that all the time when I was a kid about “ speaking German” ummmmm English isn’t the native language of either of our countries so we shouldn’t be speaking that either !!!!!! But we were invaded and now we do !!!

Thats definitely true but people are finally really taking advantage of it. When you have a million new youtube channels popping up with people talking about racing and tons of new instagram pages popping up the sport is def getting bigger. A few years ago you really only had the big name channels like vital, racerx, mxa. Now theres so many out there you cant watch em all. I’m enjoying it for sure.

Yeah lots of new content, and sure new fans, but I sort of think the majority of viewers are the same guys checking out all the new  content. So if the same 100k fans suscribe to 5 new content sites, is that growing the sport?

For what it's worth I'm one of those new fans coming from watching F1 and Motogp. I started following last season at the end of SX and watched all of the outdoor season. I'm all in this year as I know the riders and teams way better. I went to the SF mudder in-person which was awesome and am still thinking about driving up to Hangtown in the summer. However I find it difficult to talk to my friends about it because when I say dirt bikes they immediately think its freestyle mx with all the tricks so they don't really take it too seriously.

Anaheim 2 (Jan 27th) is right down Interstate 5 with about 6 hours of driving (less if you drive early morn).

See you there!

I think we are getting some F1 runoff, and Feld and mx sports are doing a good job capturing it.

I work at a biotech company. The VP of product is your typical SF resident, PhD education, liberal, not your typical moto fan (no offense boys). She’s an F1 fan, flies to some of the races and spends big money. I asked her if she was going to the supercross as a joke, and she already had tickets. She had a great time and is going to go again.
