I knew it!
I could bring one forward from each decade however it seems I always circle back to a few, they are all 2-strokes. Finally, I land on Ezra Lusk sr250 from 2003. The RC and Lusk SR 250 were pure moto.

That's a great looking bike, very well-finished and still modern looking. I did some googling and apparently the engine had serious reliability faults that they couldn't iron out, and the bike was dropped because of it. The Vertemati brothers were said to have had some input so it most likely would've been fast as hell but fragile.
Agree. It would be a monumental task for anyone to come out with an MX bike, all the complexities we don't see. Everyone bagging the hell out of Triumph... don't get it. At least, they try. This Benelli is a very advanced bike for it's time, with a cartridge gearbox. Undo a few bolts, the gearbox slides out the side.... pop in a new one (maybe different ratios). Also, that big carbon upper frame mount, different thickness, different flex. Tunable frame? Seen that since? Again, well ahead of their time, they deserve nothing but praise.
Exactly right about the whole Triumph thing. Yes it's not revolutionary and has been designed along current lines, but the Benelli (and Cannondale, and BMW etc) is what happens when something comes along that thinks too far outside the box. People may praise it but few buy it. I'm sure Triumph will get more radical once their MX line is established, but for now they've been smart. They've worked out what works best in each manufacturer and incorporated the best bits in their bike. I'm willing to bet the tests will show it to be a really solid performer when it's released.
That cartridge gearbox on the Benelli is very Vertemati/VOR. Looking at the casings etc, I reckon if you put the two engines side-by-side there wouldn't be a lot of difference.
I posted that with a considerable amount of sarcasm, due to them being complete turds. Before I owned it, I thought they were sexy to the Nth degree. Now I view it as that nasty, cheating ex!
As far as bikes from the factory. I always loved the 01 KTM 520SX. dual header. Silver tail/side plates. How the side shrouds worked with the seat cover.
Aprilia MXV450 bad ass looking machine. I didn't like the OEM front number plates but ones like this were awesome.
As far as best looking race bikes. I couldn't even pic between any of the 98 through 04 Pro Circuit KX125's let alone all the race machines.

The Team ECC bikes were always my favorite back in the day.
My favorite and cleanest look Honda ever did, I love the mid 80's Honda look especially with the blue plate but this clowns everything they've done, personable speaking.
The bike, the rider, and the time, 90's moto kicked ass.
The Benelli looks like the first new original bike since Yamaha flipped the engine around on their bikes. Nothing on that Benelli looks ripped off from another bike. Looks really good.
