Shame he never ran it on the Honda. I think seeing the 4 back out there is great.

He couldn’t….

Exactly, the more change the better for him right now. Fresh start is what he needs, IMO. And dump the basketball gear 👎. That’s right 🤌

I’m sorry, but 4 is RC’s number as long as he’s on a motorcycle, and in my personal memory book it will always be RC’s number.

However, the next gen of MX fans never saw RC run 4, the same way I never saw Wardy run 4. So for the future of the sport, they don’t care and thats fine. Let Chase have it if he wants it.

I read that he use to run #4 in his amateur days.

We raced against him from 2011-2015… His number was always 486 (YZ 85’s & Super- Mini’s & Arenacross) even when he got signed to Geico Honda in the beginning he was 486.

Heck yes get rid of that cursed #23, maybe his luck will change lol !!!

I’d say had a LOT of luck with some of his championships.

23 is so much cooler than a single digit number. Love that Kenny never ran one other than the #1

I think AC should’ve kept the 92, but I can see why he’d want a single digit

His very first race at our track he ran #4.    then 486 through all the rest of the time until he ran #40, then 23.

IF he runs 4 he will make it work well.

His first race was this date in 2003, he rode the wheels off the pdub.

All this talk about permanent numbers reminds me how funny it is, with the current rules of having to run the #1, RC being one of the guys who really made permanent numbers a thing would have only run 4 once in his entire career haha

If I've worked it out properly that is haha

Didn't think he'd change from having the number 23 as it's a cool number and the gear he did was cool.

4 and 7 will be on KTM's next year.

And maybe when tomac retires we can retire the #3 and kinda like solidify their legacy in the sport? I can see why we wouldn't do that but it's kinda a cool thought

Had they retired the 4 (and possibly the 2 for MC) I might have been okay with that, but until someone exceeds their accolades I wouldn't consider retiring a number.

For McGrath they would've had to retire #1 bro....

Meh…He won the SX Championship and earned the right. I think a lot of us thought 23 worked for him…but, this is his career and his decision. There was a number 4 long before RC and there’s already been one after... RC is still a presence in the SX world and I think it’s a sign of respect when someone like Chase wants to run it. I felt the same way when Blake ran it and I remember RC telling me he told Blake something along the lines of…”Just make sure you make that number look good!” & RC said it with a smile.

If ANYONE was gonna have a number recognized as some sort of “SX Legacy”…? To me, that’s obviously MC and the number 2. Still, I feel that is number that has been well represented since MC’s day…who…btw…had the balls to ride a 125 in the 2 stroke race at Mammoth! Laughing

When RC was crushing it…he reminded me of the Grand National era back when…every now and then.  we’d have someone absolutely crush it in MX and SX…and they’d run that awesome Blue Plate with a Gold “1” on it…to that end…RC get’s “The Goat” recognition. Hell, I’d have RC and MC hand out the SMX plates…but, I digress.

#4 will always belong on that bitchin' factory Kawasaki that the Dogger rode to perfection...

I thought the 23 really fit Chase and his image.  But I'm also in the school of thought that the change from Honda and the timing being what it is, the number 4 makes a lot of sense to me.

A perfect rebrand and a fresh start.  Will he train with Aldon?  Wink

Unless I misunderstand what you are saying, and assuming he took the career #4 after winning the 1997 125 MX, he would have used #4:

1998 125 SX

2000 250 SX

2001 250 SX

2005 250 SX

I think it's just more available singles than earned.  Those that have earned a single recently have already chosen a career number.  Even this year if Chase takes the 4 it's a move after a career number had already been chosen.  I suspect the next earned single might take the 8.  But the "hot" guys right now already have their chosen career numbers for the most part.

This is what I was thinking…so, Stanton WASN’T the actual “real” blue plate holder?
Now we know.

Nope you understood me perfectly and I was obviously wrong haha MX/SX history is NOT my strong point..

Although now I see it's funny that he would've used 4 four times in his career

Edit: I just checked and the permanent numbering system came in the year 2000 so that confuses everything and takes away all the 'funnyness' haha

I never claimed to have good taste… 🤷🏼‍♂️ I miss a lot of the things that you whippersnappers think are ugly.
