How is it weird to ask a clarifying question? I didn’t see how it’s a bitch either, but whatever.
No they can't. Yet they do.
Yeah and there's a good chance that they faced if not stiffer, at least MORE competition in those 'national' championships. I mean get real. If going to Dubai and racing in front of more camels than people simply because the government there ponies up the coin for the sanction makes it a world championship, be proud of it I guess... I'm sure the Luongo dynasty appreciates your steadfast loyalty very little.
They call it what they want because they don’t give a shit about the FIM…

So you think the National champ would show up to the World Champs and just win it tho, cause I got news for you. Ain’t that easy.
It really is.
Draw of prize money or salary does not equal a world championship.
Okay how about the Wealthiest Pay Out Championship in the World.
Will that work or should we add National and Regional in the name to?
Didn't know Brazil, Australia and Japan were in Europe.
Neither rider that won last night will actually consider themselves “World Champion”
Off the top of my head…SMX involves the Absolute Highest Paid Professional racers and teams in the sport of Motocross. No other Motocross racing series -around the globe- carries the prestige of our Supercross series…especially among the pro racers themselves. Last nights SMX Finals represents the culmination the US Supercross and Motocross season’s best performers. Again, the highest paid professional racers in the sport of Motocross where there…even the ones that couldn’t race due to being injured (Eli & Malcolm, for example).
Combined with this…last night I watched a solid collection of the worlds best motocross racers from…
Australia
Japan
Germany
France
Scotland
Sweden
And somewhere around 25+ states
Also, there’s this little gem…
The number of OEM Factory Teams, OEM supported teams, private teams and also…ACTUAL PRIVATEERS…is incomparable to ANY other professional motocross racing series…ANYWHERE.
The Industry Representation at U.S. SX/MX/SMX is INEXPLICABLE compared to any other MX series…anywhere.
For me, that’s one indication of a legitimate a World Class World Championship especially when it comes to the Supercross side of things…which SMX draws on quite heavily.
I’ll also take note of Triumph debuting their New Motocross Models at…The SMX World Championship Final.
For the record, that makes 8 manufacturers present last night…dare I say,”On track”…? Which is technically correct; but, is a little too literal.
Now, if ya wanna argue “Outdoor Motocross”. Well, I’m gonna have to say that MXGP carries the Global Prestige there.
What has Ferris got to do with this thread 💁♂️
According to some on vital the usa is the easier series, easy titles,$$. Lol
No one would argue that AMA SX is not the premier SX series in the world, with the highest level of SX riders. BUT that still doesn’t make it a world championship.
Now if there was a real world SX championship that traveled internationally, with a broader spectrum of riders, would AMA SX riders dominate? Absolutely. But that still doesn’t make the current national series a world championship.
And as @Crush said above, the level of pay has nothing to do with it. I don’t get the seeming American obsession with money? Last I looked, no world title is based on an earnings criteria.
Oh and the OEM factory teams you refer to, are US factory teams, representing the US arm of the manufacturer, they’re not the actual OEM factory. They would be from Japan and Austria.
I will agree on MXGP as being a legitimate global series, however it needs to pick up its game to get back to the level of prestige it once had.
I don’t really care who calls what a world title, but if it’s not actually real, let’s not pretend it’s anything other than a promotion tactic.
Half the top riders are from other country's so that's a pretty good reason to call it a World Championship. There is a reason all these riders come to the USA to race.
Yep, supercross.
Dont be naive, alot of is about $$ or they would be okay making 100k a year at the factory level.
Riders from around the world can't rock up to the SMX and race, they have to qualify in the American Motorcycling Association's Supercross or Motocross series first, that doesn't make it a "World Championship", that makes it an American domestic championship, which has some foreign riders.
Pit Row
Cpr said it isnt about money.
I have some unsettling news for you about Mx too
World Championship in small font, $$$ in large font...
Yep, like i said it has alot to do with $$
What I said was the level of pay doesn’t determine whether it’s a world title.
Happy to hear your explanation if that’s incorrect.
Reading posts, you can tell who's american and who's not. World Championship run in 3 cities of the same country. That would almost be funny to call it a national serie in any over part of the world. South Africa might aswell crown a world champion next year.
"And as @Crush said above, the level of pay has nothing to do with it. I don’t get the seeming American obsession with money?"
I'm with you on this. And it carries across many sports. My theory on this, is that it has everything to do with the general culture of sport as they grow up.
For Aussies and Kiwi kids (and many others) we're surrounded by rugby (union and/or league), cricket, soccer, basketball etc... in all of those sports theres a progression of representing club/school > regional rep teams > provincial/state teams > national honours. So its natural to see/understand the progression to what you and I see as meaningful international competition. That isn't defined by $.
But for many Nth American sports (Baseball, Football, Basketball etc..). There's school > college > pro. The pathway isn't the same at all to what we experience. And the "ultimate success" is the high $ pro league. And the more $ earned equates to more success. I realise I'm simplifying it.... but I can see where lots of the viewpoints come from, and why they're often contrary to many non-americans on this forum
”2023 SMX 450 champion” not even the guys who won could be bothered to call it a world championship.
That's an indication of a very strong National championship regulated by a National regulatory authority.
Why did this thread not end on page 1 when aeffertz said, "Because you can name a series whatever you want to"?
Supercross season needs to hurry up and get here...
There is a "world championship" race every year where countries send their best riders to compete against other countries. Funnily enough, the country overflowing with "world championships" as long as it's on home soil and packed with home riders, aren't so keen on that one.. ;-)
