a brand new 1981 honda XL80. after seeing chips around 1975 they had a little blond haired bowl cut kid riding a minibike in some of the episodes. well i was a blond haired bowl cut kid and went nuts. i bugged parents 4 like a year b4 they gave in; well sort of. they tried child psycology on me and said if i raised 1/2 the $$ i could have a bike! at this time being 6 the bike i wanted was about 650-700. well i picked up bottles, mowed yards and such until i was 11! i would spend usually $1 on candy 4 the week and the rest went to my mom n dad 4 my bike. looking back, i know they thought 4 sure i would last a month of chores and such b4 giving up!

1980 Yamaha TT250. I got the bike in the summer of 1980, but is was already well used and kind of beat up, but is was mine, so I no longer had to borrow a bike from my dad or brothers. Traded a nice Winchester .22 rifle with a scope, an antique 1938 Russian WWII semi auto 7.62 X 54 rifle (kind of like our M1 Garrand 30-06), and $200 cash. I realy wanted a new 1981 Maico 490 or 1981 YZ465 , but being 15, and with zero budget to work with I was lucky to get what I got. In hind sight, the TT250 was a perfect starter bike that never broke down , was easy to start and had a decent range with the stock tank. If I had to guess, I probably rode that thing at least 5,000 miles off road the first year and half. The only things I had to fix were normal crash parts (was always trying to jump the thing, 15 and stupid), and normal maintanance parts like tires, tubes, chains and oil. When I got rid of it in about 1983 to my buddy, it was still running like new, and last I talked to him about 4-5 years back , was still running fine for his kids. After that got a a 1983 Maico 490 Spider, and have pretty much stuck with 2 stroke big bore bikes since, even have a 2005 Maico 500 for my newest MX bike.

I had a 1973 G-5. It only had 5 gears but it had the weird shift pattern with neutral on the bottom and all five gears shifted up. Every time I let someone ride it for the first time they would step down on the shifter, rev it up, let out the clutch and go nowhere.

Yep...the G-4 had the same shift pattern now that you mention it.

My first real bike (after a B&S powered minibike) was a 1970 Suzuki TS90 that I bought from guy on my paper route with my own money when I was 14. It looked like this when I bought it, but I remember it looking just like DeCoster’s RN370 when I was done with it. Laughing I rode my first race at Indian Dunes on it in 1972.

When I was 13, I worked Saturday's at Dave's Mini Bike & Go-Kart Shop, in Tustin, to earn money to buy a Taco 44 frame kit. It had everything, except an engine. I bought the kit when I was 14 and my Grandpa loaned me a 3hp Briggs mower engine. I wore out the front yard riding that thing and using the trees at each end as turn-pivots. Looked like this:

It wasn't long before I traded it back to Dave's for this little ripper! It had a Hodaka 800cc and a four-speed. I bet it did at least 60mph on those little tires!

I still have my first bike, a 1974 TM 75 Suzuki and use it as a pit bike/conversation piece at the track on race days.

The only picture I can find are of my current bike and the TM 75 in the garage. I guess its kind of fitting. The TM is all original expect the tires, cables and jets. Even the grips are the stock original's. It's had one top end put in sometime in the 80's. I've talked about restoring it, but if you look at the picture's you can see the tank decals are worn. I put many hours on the bike and wore off ever bit of those decals as a kid. Every time I look at the tank and those worn decals, it makes me smile because I know those were some of the best times I had growing up.

Chaparrel (sic?) 80 around 74ish. A couple of years after that pic all the land you see in the background was turned into a practice track.

Nice lumpy, I was partial to the MR's although I never owned one. 1969 Honda Super 90 was my first "real" motorcycle in '72. I was 12 and thought I was the shit.
