On the first 40+ class podium of the day at LL's, Mike Brown stated he intends to race Loretta's one more year (2024) and attempt to qualify for a national afterward. He said if he makes it, it'll end his time at LL's.
What's the current oldest rider to make a pro national 40 man field? Mid-40s? Does Dowd hold the record?
Would be badass if he did Unadilla, Budds, and Ironman in 2024.
Fitch was claiming he was the oldest when he went to lakewood 2 years ago, don't know if it true but he could be.
I thought it was Dowd at 36 (?) but I'm sure I'm mistaken??
Keefer just took his shirt off.

I think he was 43 when he podiumed in 09, not sure how much longer he raced/qualified after that.
How old was Guy Cooper when he raced some Nationals in the early 2000s on the KTM 540 ?
I can see the threads on Vital now... "Boomer makes National".
Cooper was 40 when he raced in 2002 . He earned national # 49 .
Brownie is a beast... If he wants to do it, not much is gonna stop him is it.
Depends a lot on the competition at the time and the track he picks I guess, but where do you folks see him for the overall?
Surprised he doesn't want to jump in this year to get even further up the list. Is there much AMA / Pro Motocross red tape or just prior commitments / scheduling or plain doesn't want to yet?
According to the Vault, the last time Dowd earned points was Southwick 2013 - 47 years, 10 months
Guy Cooper scored points at Washougal 2002 - Not sure when he was born, but I believe this would put him right around 40.
Can't find anything on Fitchs birth year, so hard to say
If Brown does it there is no doubt who will be the oldest.
I have a feeling that there were some pretty old guys who may have qualified for Nationals in the early 70s, if you want to go back that far, I guess. I don't think that it'd be easy to find all of the birthdates, though.
I'd sort of narrow it down to the 'modern era' of around 1990 onward I think.
Mike Brown is a Beast. Good luck to him next year and for sure he could do it this year.
Bobby Fitch is from Colorado and much younger than Dowd or Cooper.....
Wish the racerx vault showed non points paying finishes.
Mickey Kessler wasnt older then Dowd when he last scored points in a national in 1990. But I'm curious if he qualified but did not score any points in a national after that? I seem to remeber him racing some 500 races in the early 90's. How old is he? he started racing nationals in 1975.
I don't think there would be much chance that anyone over 40 qualified back in the 70's.
Brownie is a decade too young to be a Boomer- he's Gen X.
Oh....that doesn't stop the term from being thrown around on Vital in regards to seasoned folks.
Pit Row
Clearly the boomer tag is tongue in cheek. I bet he would qualify, guy is fast AF and fit. Be cool if he does it.
It used to be that former champions have a gate sport reserved for them. All he'd have to do is show up to race. I don't know if that's still in the AMA rulebook.
Maybe not, but there sure seemed to be plenty of guys who were able to win between Nationals and Trans-AMAs back then who were over 30 or so. Sure seems like there could have been several local guys come out to race at their local National who were 40ish. Perhaps it just seemed like it in the early days before everyone started at 7 and was in a training facility full time by 13.
You could be right, but don't you think that it seems like people just looked older back then?

Searching Google and this turned up. Cool story.
that is bad ass!
Yeah, it's not too easy to find ages/birthdates of most of the non-factory racers. Especially guys who were racing before the mid-2000's.
As far as I know I've never heard it being rescinded. So idk what he means by qualifying maybe seeing where his speed is in timed qualifying and if he's in the top 40 going for it. If he's 45th he passes on his gate to someone else.
Paging ML to the red courtesy phone.
It says champions in the past 10 years in the rule book.
Pfbt, 50+, wanna see 60yo qual 👨🏼🦳
But yeah that was a big deal when Cooper did that, 40 was unheard of right? On a big ol’ KTM
The qualifying shouldn't be an issue for Mike. He has been very active racing throughout the years. Not some test rider minus race pace for X amount of years.
