Will there be a bike claim at LL this year?

My thought is the rule is very unique and provides a great way to keep somewhat of a level playing field for all the riders.

Hell, with some big insider bs and threats to the rider who made a claim, (by his own sponsorship I might add) I'm not sure there was a bike claim in 2022? So I'm sure the "bike claim" of 2023 will be the same

The publicity it garnered surely raised awareness, and probably motivation as well

The claiming rule is to keep these “amateur” races fair. If no one ever claims a bike then what’s the point?  I would hope there would be multiple bikes claimed every year.

If you’re someone who thinks this is an unfair rule you you looking into “claiming races,” the lowest class of horse racing. That’s some wild stuff.  All horses in the race can be “claimed.”  The person who claims the horse owns the horse as soon as the gate opens. The old owner gets to keep and purse, but the new owner gets the horse.

I remember being at Lake Whitney in the early 2000’s racing 80’s seeing Adam Chatfield and the pits were absolutely buzzing about him claiming Alessi’s bike. I’d love to see more bikes get claimed. The rule is there for a reason so let’s see more people utilize it. The whole “unspoken rule” that you don’t ever claim a bike is b/s. I love this sport but there are certain aspects that are too cliquey and people/teams bullying people into not exercising this rule is one of the examples.

Some of the people involved in last year’s debacle are friends and I’m certainly not in the “Anti-Deegan” camp; but, damn…the way the claim went down…or “didn’t”…was disappointing, to me.

For all those involved, here’s the problem:

Perception…&/or…Appearances…ARE reality. And the reality is…Intimidation and Manipulation were employed to prevent someone from his rightful claim to a bike.

That’s how it plays out…in the end.

The attempts to attack the character of the claimant and his group are further embarrassments for me and my sport.

I’m hopeful that we’ve learned from this, as a community, and the next time this plays out, I hope we simply “go by the book”.

Signed,

A racer from the inaugural LL’s that loves this sport.

I bet these factory 'amateur' kids will have less trick bits in their bikes this year 😂

If you practically live at a training facility and have factory support and mechanics to race against the other kids, should you really need all the bells and whistles that would make it a problem for you to have 'your' bike claimed (and paid for)?

Not one of them have the heat Deegan carries where ever he goes. Same team, might not even be on the same stuff he was.

My thoughts align w TeamGreen.

MXA did a tour of Star and all they got was a look at the door of the engine and suspension rooms. What harm was going to come from a quick look through an open door? Makes me wonder about how hard they fought the claim.

At 5:30.

To echo what Team Green said. It’s a real shame claimers are threatened to be blackballed by the “industry” for exercising the rules but on the other hand the claimees are never threatened by anyone for not following the rules be it the bike or the claim rule specifically and they just get to keep rolling along within  the “industry” no harm, no foul. Sad!

A complete clown show for all involved and how quickly people forget what happened.

Anyways, statistically there have been very few claims lately so I would say it’s unlikely there’s one this year

There could possibly be some claims this year.  Now, with that being said, whether the claims are completed or not remains to be seen.  It looks as though, if the bike being claimed belongs to a high profile rider, then probably not.....

If the bike belongs to a poor bastard who happens to be damn talented, then I can easily see that claimed bike going home in someone else's rig.  This last go around was a fucking disgrace........

Does the person that claims a bike have to be a racer, or can they be an outsider ?...

Hypothetically of course...If a person decides to claim the top 5 placing bikes in a certain class...What would the approx cost be to do so ?

The only people who can file a claim for a bike are the racers who raced in the same class as the bike being claimed. Nobody else can file a claim

The cost to do so is double the MSRP of the bike being claimed plus whatever small application fee there is

Are LL rules different, I thought it was 50% over MSRP...

Can't believe that was a year ago.   What a shit show that was.

I'm here for the PW50 protests.

Why would anybody protest a PW50 with A-kit forks?

Technically speaking I don’t even think there was a bike claim last year?

Technically speaking the paperwork was filled out correctly, and the AMA accepted the paperwork and payment for the claim.

MxSports making a fuss about Deegan’s graduation during this year’s Nationals, with Tim Cotter presenting and congratulating Haiden, added further salt to that ‘perception and appearance’ wound.
Must think we all have the memory of a goldfish.

My fav PW 50 mod of all time was the shaving off the cases to boost compression.......  God the list of things to be done to a PW is incredible.  Or, stripping the frame of paint to save 3lbs....  bet that was a bitch to maintain.
