My sons 2022 MC125 has 7 hours on it, we have ridden it in medium/soft conditions and the knobs are just coming off in chunks....
anyone else have this issue with them? I know they are not the quality of a Dunlop, but didn't expect them to just fall apart.
I really liked the Maxxcross SI rear for a long time. It wore like iron and never gave me anything to complain about (I’m not a tire snob though). They started to go up in price so I started going another route.
One of my buddies swears by them because “his dad said they were the best” but he peels knobs off in less than ten hours on fronts and rears.
Sounds like they are. Bet you won’t buy another set.
I would not consider Maxxis to be a top tier brand and for what they are asking for them why wouldn’t you go with Bridgestone, Dunlop, or Pirelli?
These are the OEM tires. My son is a 125 beginner and the bike has 7 hours on it. I didn’t buy them, they came on the bike.
I will never buy a maxxis tire after this.

What are you running for tire pressure? Seen wrong psi destroy tires.
When did Maxxis prices go crazy? They used to be good enough for the low price, now they’re priced like Dunlop/Bridgestone/Pirelli/Goldentyre, but just as mediocre as always..
For today’s price, Maxxis is junk.
Is it a left over bike? Sounds like the tires could be old or as someone else said psi issue.
It’s strange that they just are mediocre in the dirt bike world, but for MTB they have an amazing number of stupendous offerings. Maybe that just is indicative of where they concentrate their R&D, total time and effort. Perhaps they are just willing to get by with where they are in the dirt bike world.
12.5 psi
Pirellis are not how they where a few years back. They are made indonesia and are harder than the pirellis that they made in brazile before.
The Maxcross IT used to be an awesome all around rear tire. Have not run them since the prices went up. The new Dunlop's work great new, but they start chucking knobs off, both front and rear, rather quickly.
I went back to Bridgestone for moto and IRC off-road.
12.5 psi is too low for the MX ST. I ran an MX ST on my yz250 for ages before it was worn, always at 13.5 psi. The 450 on the other hand threw knobs on my second ride.
In getting a good deal on maxxis at the moment, ran the st front and paddle this weekend on a sand track and the grip was good. I'll be running the SI when we go to the dirt tracks, will be interesting to see how they wear
I ran my Maxxis rear for 11 hours on my 350. In that time it lost two knobs and literally every shoulder knob on both sides was split about 1/3 of the way through all thew way around the tire. Overall it was a pretty decent tire but not warranting the prices they ask these days. I went with a dunlop MX33
Same here. Rear on my Gas Gas 350 is missing half the knobs after only 9 hours.
Dunlop is running a $25 per tire rebate on up to two tires until the end of the month. You have to use a pro dealer though. Can’t mail order them.
If you’ve ever bought a brand new vehicle you’ll realize the stock spec tires are junk. Dollars and cents for the manufacturer. Same for a lot of bikes. Especially the euro minis. First thing that comes off the new bikes are the Maxxis tires. Then I put em back on when they go for sale. They work but they’re not Dunlop or Michelin quality. Especially if you’re racing.
I just can't run Maxxis tires. They're just Cheng Shin renamed and re-priced. And I had plenty of experience with Cheng Shin in the 70's...
The MX33 is also made in Indonesia. My buddy and I were just having this conversation yesterday and looked on the tires (he has an MX33 and I run Pirelli).
Pit Row
about 5.5 hours on my sons 250f and the rear was chunking off. not impressed with the stock maxxis
Stock maxxis is very pressure-sensitive. I think the front is great though.
The Maxxis set on my '22 MC450 lasted about 10 hours before the rear started developing cracks near the base of the knobs. I replaced them with Dunlops front/rear.
I'm not going to slam the Maxxis tire because it is designed to be a cheaper tire with less performance and durability to fit within GasGas' pricing strategy, but I didn't realize how bad the corner traction of the Maxxis tires were until the first ride with the Dunlops. IMO, unless you are just a pure recreational rider, the stock Maxxis tires should be immediately replaced for better performance.
I had a bike came with a MX3S front and the side knobs chunked off almost immediately, but it looks like some riders really like those tires. I think the tire companies just sell the OEMs old dried out tires really cheap to get rid of them. I would never judge a tire’s performance off a set that came on a new bike.
Been pretty happy with the Michelin Starcross 5 mediums
Rode my 22 125 last week, original tires. On mostly hard. I did not have any issue. The back seems to have a decent amount of wear for only 5hrs, but knobs werent coming off. i was going to ride them till i get new rims to lace. Then over to dunlops.
Which Dunlop did you switch to that you thought the difference was that large?
5 hours and the tire starts breaking up. I had 2 go like this. Running 13.5 psi on a 350 Husky riding moto. For what they currently sell for i wont be buying again.
MX33
Yes, they are awesome! hahaha Chunked off every single side knob at 5 hrs on a 125 with a kid that weighs 105 lbs...
Went through my maxxis rear in 6 hours on my 125
My buddy actually contacted Maxxis after he burned through one in 5 hours on his new 125 and they actually replaced the tire free of charge. Strange, but true.
I usually run 33 Dunlop on the rear. I bought a spare/practice rear wheel and bought a Tusk 35 tire to go on it. I have been pleasantly surprised how well this tire works and holds up. I don’t know who makes it for RM but it’s not bad especially for the money.
